Michael Monti Leads Mark Mitchell in Race for Tempe Mayor After Election Day

Slimer, the real leader in the Tempe mayoral race.
The relentless attacks on Mark Mitchell seem to have worked out in Michael Monti's favor in the race for Tempe mayor, as Monti was up by one point after people hit the ballot box yesterday.

There still are some votes left to count -- provisional ballots and people who brought their early-voting ballots with them to the polls -- but Monti's lead was 222 votes, according to the latest tally sent out by the city at 8:26 p.m. Tuesday.

Since Mitchell got more votes than Monti in the March primary, one would expect that the slime was a factor in this round of voting.

First, the Monti campaign pulled out records of a 1993 encounter between Mitchell and Tempe cops, as Mitchell (probably with a sigh) said, "Monti's really hitting the bottom of the barrel on this one."

That was not, in fact, the bottom of the barrel.

Mitchell was then hit with what he called "what may be the most repulsive last-minute attack in Arizona history."

(Seventy-six percent of our readers agreed with Mitchell in our unscientific poll.)

The right-wing Sonoran Alliance blog released the report from the Phoenix Police Department, in which a woman claims Mitchell engaged in some sexual activities with her when she was a kid, and Mitchell was somewhere between the ages of 12 and 14 -- back in 1983. She had just brought up her accusations to police within the past few months.

Former Tempe Mayor/Congressman Harry Mitchell even came out of the woodwork in support of his son, and against the Monti campaign/supporters after all the allegations came out, saying, "I have never been so disgusted. Never."

Monti and his PR pal Jason Rose claim they have nothing to do with it.

Rose Monti actually put out a statement saying it was "sad and shameful" of Mitchell to suggest this had anything to do with them.

As for the open Tempe city council seat, it appears Kolby Granville's going to take that one over Dick Foreman -- Granville's up by more than 2,000 votes -- although both managed to run campaigns that didn't involve the phrase "sexual abuse."

According to the city, "final unofficial election results" will come out some time after 5 p.m. on Friday.

Actually, last night's run-off ended about where the primary did 9 weeks ago.  On primary night, Monti was ahead of Mitchell by about 200 votes; but when all the provisional ballots had been counted by that Friday, Mitchell had leap-frogged over Monti, ending with almost 300 votes more.  With Mitchell behind by only 222 votes in the run-off, the same could happen.  We won't know until all the votes are actually counted by the end of the week.

Oh my day just picked up. The Repugnanat is reporting that there are 1,600 early ballots still to count. Guess who the majority of early voters are??? DEMS! Mark Mitchell's odds just shot up! NICE!

Funny thing, the other day I got a robo call from Monti when I was in a meeting. I called back and talked to Monti himself for a minute.

As for the ballots, I seem to remember Monti being a couple hundred votes ahead in the primary as well, but when the final tally came in Mitchell came out on top...Just sayin' may want to hold off on the congrats for the king of the roach restaurant.

Sure, Mark Mitchell and his allies never ever  engaged in sliming Michael Monti. Not once. Mark Mitchell's campaign was pure as the driven snow. We all just imagined those Mark Mitchell mailers attacking Michael Monti's business. And that attack website created by the Arizona Democratic Party that used a domain name that was the same as Monti's FullMonti twitter hashtag was just a figment of our imaginations also. The signs that looked just like the FullMonti hashtag signs that promoted that website and were place right next to real Monti signs including at the polling places were hallucinations.

Hi Mr. Hendley, I have read through your writings leading up to the Tempe mayoral election. Your bias towards Mark Mitchell is bordering on Mitchell worship. There is no attempt on your part as I can see it to perform any service to the reader to provide any real un-biased reporting. But then again I guess maybe that is not your intent. This is after all just a blog, and i do understand your freedom to blog your opinions as loudly as you want. I do believe though that anyone who has into all of the information that is out there can easily see that there are many other reasons besides "slime" as to why Monti appears to have flipped the vote count at least in preliminary unofficial counts. What about the fact that Linda Spears who garnered more than 2000 votes in the primary threw her support behind Monti as the candidate better prepared to lead Tempe? Dont you think that might have had an impact? I respect the fact that everyone has their own opinions on where this race has been. But your lack of a real understanding of the issues here is very evident. It really feels as though your reporting is targeted as a "feel good" to those who are on the same bandwagon as you and not with intent to provide any real researched information. Therefore I have no reason to read your posts any longer. There is very little real un-biased substance to your reporting on the true campaign issues. I do have one suggestion though, you might want to consider replacing the Valley Fever heading on your blog with "Mark Mitchell for Mayor"

Your facts are wrong. These 5 felony counts against Mark Mitchell were the result of a Phoenix police investigation into anther matter. It had nothing to do with his opponent. Why don't you print the Phoenix police report and let your readers hear the  truth. What are you afraid of? Anyone who cares about the truth can google the Phoenix police report and read for themselves. Read the report.

Monti was ahead by only 3 votes in the primary.

Are you saying they didn't or are you being sarcastic? I'm having a hard time telling the difference.

To be honest with you I refused to look at any mailers I was sent. I was sent some emails that I didn't solicit from the Monti team. I made a feeble attempt to look at a few websites....I don't believe in engaging in the slugfest but this issue has been a thorn in my side since before it came out because of how and why it came out.

If you are attempting sarcasm it actually comes across as hate and jealousy, imo.

Amazingly Linda Spears Endorsed Monti and he still didn't gain all 2000 of her votes, or he would be up by 2K.

The other thing that Hendley completely misses is the fact that turnout went up from the primary to the runoff. Negative campaigning usually drives turnout down not up. I think the Monti lead has more to do with an obviously improved Monti get out the vote effort than it has to do with anything else.

Since you brought up Linda Spears, ever since that day she threw her support behind Monti I lost complete respect for her. As for that other bimbo who ran for council, she really needs to learn about the corruption in the police department before she goes quoting Tom Ryff.... www.tempepolicecloset.com  this is where his story is told.

If you want to talk about the issues maybe you should know them too not just regarding this story but also the way Hallman and Onnie have pushed the Monti agenda. Not because he is the best candidate for the city but because he is the best candidate to continue the corruption in the city of tempe.

Did it ever occur to you that Mr. Hendley might live in Tempe and he went to ASU so he does have some sort of connection to Tempe. So in my opinion his biased is valid.

One thing we can be thankful for is that Foreman wasn't elected. I know Kolby and Hallman are friends but I also know that Kolby has watched what has happened to city politics since Hallman has been mayor.

Liar.

There are no felony counts against Mitchell.

The police specifically and explicitly declined to charge Mitchell - as they clearly state in the report.

The complain I have with the reporting is that it does not state

1) The Sonoran Alliance is the personal blog of Shane Wikfors, the communications director for the AZGOP, and

2) Shane was teasing the story, by his own admission, weeks before the report was even written, much less released, and

3) Elected PHX GOP were hounding the PHX police demanding that the report be finished and made public in time for the election, and

4) That Monti was pimping this story to the press, through his campaign manager, before the report was released.

But other than that, yea, no proof of the AZGOP's slimey hands in this matter, at all.

Don't pretend that you're a conservative ... you're just a cretin who delighted in the pain of this woman and who celebrates, now, the actions that will in all likelihood forever prejudiced her case from moving forward.

You sicken any true conservative.

If you had actually ever read a police report, any police report, you would find that they are made up of ASSUMPTIONS made by the police, NOT substantiated facts. Substantiated facts are brought out at a trial from which a decision of guilt or innocence is made.

Eleanor Holguin
Eleanor Holguin

Why do you continue to spout this shit? That's all you can say and still few agree with you.

While Monti might have the lead right now there is still time for that to change...if it doesn't, well then, it's time to gear up for what's next.

Matthew Hendley

Not sure which facts are wrong, I wrote that they claim to have nothing to do with it. There's also a link in there to the story about the police report, which includes, sure enough, the police report.

Sin Of Omission
Sin Of Omission

You might include a link to the police report, but you always fail to write anything in your articles about the fact that the police report states that the woman mentioned the allegations to police while they were interviewing her for something else. She didn't just call up the police out of the blue. That's hugely significant to question of whether this is a "dirty trick" or not. Deliberately omitting that over four separate articles puts your journalistic integrity in question. You may be an opinion blogger but you should at least explain why you don't think that is significant in forming your opinion.

Eleanor Holguin
Eleanor Holguin

They should have said that in their opinion you got the facts wrong.

Matthew Hendley
Matthew Hendley

I haven't included it because I don't see how that changes anything if you don't know what the other matter was. It doesn't change things from one side to the other if you have literally no idea what the other matter was. If she initially called police to say Andrei Cherny ran over her toe with a tricycle in 1981, then gave police the story about Mitchell, how would that make it clear it's not a "dirty trick"?

Eleanor Holguin
Eleanor Holguin

ok monti or whoever you are....no she didn't just call the police out of the blue but the integrity of this case was compromised when somebody leaked it from the pd or she herself told somebody and they leaked it to monti's group. no matter now many times monti's group denies they had anything to do with this  nobody believes it when it comes to have teased it.........nobody except for maybe themselve and that goes to show you why hallman and onnie back this moron.
