Five Wives Vodka, Banned in Idaho, May Come to Arizona; In the Meantime, Feel Free to Pick Up Five Actual Wives

Ogden's Own Distillery, based in Utah, has been making some big news lately after one of its products -- Five Wives Vodka -- was banned from being sold in Idaho by the state's liquor division.

In a letter to the company's distributor in Idaho, the liquor board wrote that its members felt the concept "is offensive to a prominent segment of our population."

Ogden's Own Distillery believes the liquor board's talking about Mormons, even though another Utah company's "Polygamy Porter" can be sold in Idaho.

Since we have a decent amount of Mormons here in Arizona, we decided to find out where to get Five Wives down here.

Colorado City's the obvious answer -- especially since the Legislature refused to dismantle its FLDS-lovin' police force -- but as for Five Wives Vodka, it's not yet available in Arizona.

Steve Conlin, partner and VP of marketing at Ogden's Own Distillery, tells New Times they sent a couple samples to distributors in Arizona, but no one's picked it up yet.

As for offending Mormons, Conlin says it's more of a historical reference than a stab at Mormons and the political-correctness police.

"I get the nod to the historical past, and we wanted to do that," Conlin says, but adds that "it's not making fun of it."

The vodka's already for sale in Utah and Wyoming, and it's about to be added to stores in Missouri and Texas.

In the meantime, the company seems to be capitalizing nicely off the rejection from Idaho, getting significant news coverage and selling "Free the Five Wives" t-shirts.

As I have read down through these comments below, it has become apparent that most of you are completely ignorant about Mormons in general, or Colorado City in particular.  First of all, in the pioneer days when Mormons were settling the West polygamy came about because male members of the church were supposed to take on the responsibility for elderly widows in their community.  When polygamy was made illegal, exactly what would you have expected them to do with more than one wife?  Many left the United States and others formed into small groups that wanted nothing more than to be left alone.  As we all know there WERE abuses when  underage girls were forced into improper marriages, but that stopped years ago for the most part.  Let's consider, for a moment, the current liberal attempt to re-define same-sex civil unions are marriages.  If you are a Christian, Catholic or Jew, is that any less offensive than polygamy? Colorado City is a beautiful clean town with well kept homes and gardens and  home-schooled children who do their daily chores without complaining.  Before you decide to be a judge, you need to go there and not make false assumptions.

The Colorado City/Hildale Community already has the Merry Wives Restaurant, which serves excellent meals, and if they are not interested, we have the Desert Diamond Distillery in Kingman, AZ further south ad there is a winery being opened near Kingman.  All of us are in Mohave County, and would welcome this product being produced here.

I wondered why my mormon neighbor's car was always parked outside the liquor store.  If you want to keep a mormon from drinking all your booze, just invite another mormon

Since its made from corn & wheat Idaho doesn't like it; if it were made from potatoes it would probably be approved in Idaho. The Mormons are the same!

There was a trial, recently, that disproved pretty much everything you said about how "all that ended years ago."

How can we take you seriously when you pretend such events don't go on?

Idaho has lots of dry-land wheat farmers just North of the Utah border. I'm a 7th generation Mormon.  But I count many friends among the FLDS members in the Colorado City area.  They are hard-working people with lots of successful business ventures. And this could certainly be another.
