Andrew Thomas Is Pretty Much Toast -- Is Joe Arpaio Next?

thomasface-side.jpg
A guy who cannot practice law in the State of Arizona.
In case you're just now emerging from under a rock, former Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas was disbarred yesterday.

An Arizona State Supreme Court disciplinary panel found that Thomas -- as well as his former deputy, Lisa Aubuchon -- were attempting prosecutions in the name of politics.

Thomas and his comrades can appeal the decision, but barring that, Thomas is without a law license for the next five years.

But what about Thomas' former brother-in-arms, Maricopa County Sheriff' Joe Arpaio?

As our colleague Ray Stern wrote yesterday, "Justice could still take place for Arpaio in the form of a criminal indictment from the U.S. Department of Justice, which for more than three years has been looking at alleged civil rights violations by Arpaio that include the claims of abuse-of-power addressed today in regard to Thomas."

You better bet Arpaio's mentioned by name in the Supreme Court disciplinary panel's opinion released yesterday -- 48 times.

Not that a disciplinary panel for attorneys could actually do anything to Arpaio, but there are other avenues.

Two of the ways Arpaio could be sent packing could be by a certain outcome of a potential criminal indictment from the Justice Department, or he could get a voter-approved boot from office.

This morning's question: Now that Andrew Thomas is toast, is Arpaio going to be the next one to face the facts?

When you mr Thomas are living out of your cardboard box on skid row, I might feel a little sorry and give you a dime for coffee

Does the fact that Joe Arpaio looks, sounds, and acts like a gangster suggest that he may be? Probably so.

Joe seems to pull the strings in many of these county elections.  How many other county officials has he helped get elected?  Do they owe him loyalty as well?  This may get much bigger now that the covers have been pulled back.

If there is ANY justice Joe will get what he is due. What ticks me off is the residents of AZ that defend this idiot, it's YOUR tax money that is paying for all of his law suits.

His anger at the GOP presidential nominee's not taking up his Birtherism banner is key sign he is loosing his cool, his arrogance might be showing a tad bit of a crack, one can delude ones self into believing one is immune to federal government, Old George Wallace/Sheriff Bull Conners of ole Alabama thought so as well, they are rarely even thought of anymore, of course ole Wallace got religion in the end repented, ole Conners went to the great beyond never making one peep of regret, one can speculate if one went up and the other went down!:-)

Time to end Arpaio's culture of torture and abuse. Folks, take time to look at reality. ALL are at risk in the rapidly expanding mass industrial prison complex and the private prison corporation take-over of jails and state prisons. This is what's coming if people don't take action and stop this madness and inhumanity.

I think the feds were waiting for the State to settle this first and then go after Thomas and the joker at the same time
They left 2 criminal charges alone hoping the feds wil pick it up and save the state some money

It's about time some of these so called people who are suppose to be here for the people, are finally getting their dues, for doing stickly for themselves.  Maybe now Arizona can stop being the laughing stock of the country because of these so called politicians who only seek and get into office at the expense of the good people who should had been elected in the first place.  Arizona is now being govern by the so called shelf serving politicans(not all of them mine you) but the ones who think their way of thinking is the only right way.  It's starts from the top with the governor down to representatives and this includes the so called legistation being passed by these so called "rightous and I know what's best for you"  politicians.

Not to quibble Matthew, but disbarred means Thomas and Aubuchon cannot even apply to be readmitted to the bar for five years.  The odds on them ever being readmitted, however, are about zero.  I can't think of a single disbarred attorney who was ever let back in.  This case is a lot like Ken Peasley's down in Pima County.  They may be eligible to reapply, but it is a waste of time.  Thomas and Aubuchon will never realistically practice law ever again.

I voted no because Arpaio should have been indicted years ago so he has too much dirt on local and state politicians and not to mention his personal "Imperial Guard" to harass and intimidate.

I HOPE, I REALLY HOPE that it is a YES and his sorry ass is shipped of the Club Fed.  I would love one day to see reports on his income.

["Chenal, who practiced construction law, was suspended by the State Bar
of Arizona in 2005 for various ethical lapses. She applied for
reinstatement in 2010, and after a hearing at which Horne, then
AG-elect, declared she would have a job in his new administration, she
was reinstated and placed on probation."]

Carmen Chenal had her license "suspended" and five years later it was reinstated. I don't know she was actually disbarred, however.
