National Review: Sheriff Joe Arpaio "Will Not Win and (Does) Not Deserve To"

national review logo.JPG

An unsigned opinion article in the conservative magazine National Review today states that Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio doesn't deserve to win re-election.

The magazine has previously run articles that defended Arpaio, but the sheriff's recent "birther" madness pushed it over the edge.

That's understandable, because the National Review has already debunked the same so-called evidence Arpaio recently released that purports to prove President Obama's birth certificate isn't real.

Here's what the magazine has to say about Arpaio and other birther-conspiracy nuts holding public office:

Republicans who have chosen to associate with the birthers have done their party and their country a disservice. And as Sheriff Arpaio settles comfortably into that political mental ward, the same must be said of those Republicans who choose to associate themselves with him more broadly. Those who cannot distinguish between the birthers' flim-flam and the critical questions that face our nation in 2012 will not win and do not deserve to.

While that sort of criticism sounds worse coming from a right-wing publication like the National Review, we'd also have to agree with a follow-up column by the Atlantic, which says that the birther nonsense "doesn't even make the top 10 list of his most egregious behavior."

The Atlantic article then goes on to discuss Arpaio's other problems, like the apparent racial profiling by his deputies, the misspending of $100 million in jail-tax funds, the bad treatment of inmates in county jails, the politically motivated criminal investigations, the failure to investigate sex crimes and other abuses.

Click here for a comprehensive list of the many New Times articles published about Arpaio over the years.

In reviewing Arpaio's history, you'll see that the sheriff "beclowns himself," to use the National Review's apt phrase, time and time again.

You might want to look at ARPAIO's past from outside the norm.  Being from Philadelphia I know Frank Rizzo when I see and hear Frank.  I don't care if they claim Frank died of a heart attack conveniently the same year Arpaio becomes sheriff in AZ.  Thats Frank Rizzo period.

https://www.facebook.com/photo...

And FYI
his name comes from the combination of the following

AR = Arizona
PA = He was the Mayor and police Chief of Philadelphia
IO = The Chicago Theatre Companies call sign where he learned his acting chops.

You should be asking him for HIS Birth certificate.  Also you might want to look at why he ran from Philadelphia.  The Move people were extremely pissed about his unlawful acts of aggression towards them.

He needs to be held accountable for the death of a man there.

Why is seeking legitimate birth records from Obama so controversial?
If the White House released a forged document represented as Obama's long-form birth certificate, then it is what it is.  Examine the evidence.

If Obama has been using a CT-issued SS# that could not legitimately be his, then it is what it is.  Investigate.

If microfilm from the National Archives that would show INS information for Obama's entry into the U.S. from Kenya in August 1961 is mysteriously missing, then it is what it is.  Take a look.

I'm a fan of Bill Moyers because he investigates the truth about financial elites hijacking American democracy.  I find Koch Brothers / Fox News / Sarah Palin "conservativism" to be grossly misleading and irresponsible.

But in the same light I find the blind servitude of the liberal media to the Obama Administration to be reprehensible and cowardly.  If there's evidence that the POTUS has fraudulently and illegally represented himself, then that needs to be investigated.

The Democratic Party may have bet on the wrong horse and this is a problem to be examined and fixed, not swept under the rug, especially since U.S. national security may be at stake.

Or maybe that latter issue is something you all deem yourselves to be "above".  Now how smart is that?

WITCH HUNT FOR OBAMA'S BIRTHPLACE IS DISCRIMINATION...Has now evolved to
his Father wasn't  born in America and
"natural born means both parents born in USA".
Precedent for Obama's Presidency...Sheriff Joe off base...Nada
to talk about...
Much ado has been printed, talked about Obama's eligibility to
be president the precedent was set many, many years ago the last time being 83
years ago with Herbert Hoover.
Obama is the first mulatto president but by no means the first
president with a foreign born parent. Obama's father was not born in the US but
his mother Stanley Ann Dunham (November
29, 1942 – November 7, 1995), Born in Wichita, Kansas.  I
have said a lot of things about Obama, however I don't believe anyone should be
discriminated against for any reason.  Scream, yell, rant about his
policies and vote him out of office but don't continue the witch hunt about
where he was born. To continue the witch hunt about Obama's birthplace is
discriminating against him for his parentage.
dis·crim·i·na·tion  (d-skrm-nshn) n 1. The act of discriminating.2. The ability or power to see or make fine distinctions; discernment. 3. Treatment or consideration based on class or
category rather than individual merit; partiality or prejudice:
Discrimination doesn't have to have a racial connotation in this case it's accepting one President as eligible who has a foreign born parent and another as not eligible.
Presidents with Foreign Born Parents
http://community.myvoa.com/_Th...
With Barack Obama's election, immigrant parents from all over the world can now honestly tell their American-born children that they, too, can dream of one day becoming president. It's a cultural as much as a racial barrier that's fallen: As the son of a Kenyan
man, Barack Obama will be the first U.S. president with a parent born outside
the British Isles or Canada.
Only six other U.S. presidents had a foreign-born parent. Mr. Obama will
be the first in nearly ninety years, since President Herbert Hoover was
inaugurated in 1929.
Andrew Jackson (1829-1837) is the only president born of two immigrants, both
Irish.
Presidents with one immigrant parent are Thomas Jefferson (1801-1809), whose mother was born in England, James Buchanan (1857-1861) and Chester Arthur (1881-1885), both of
whom had Irish fathers. Woodrow Wilson
(1913-1921) and Herbert Hoover (1929-1933), whose mothers were born
respectively in England and Canada.
Signers of the Constitution and where they were born... Eight were foreign born

President'sand where they were born http://www.nationalgeographic....
The first black president was also the first
since Herbert Hoover with a foreign-born parent; the first since Woodrow Wilson
to work as a college professor before entering politics; and the first since
Grover Cleveland to have his principal home in a big Northern city. http://www.presidentsusa.net/p...

SO,the Republi-Cons are starting to admitt what a cancer ASSpaio is to their brand. Well a little too late, these extremist have let this tyrant ASSpaio run rough shod over every ones human rights, all the while turning a blind eye & even holding this corrupt criminal up on a pedestal. I guess better late than never. ASSpaio is quickly becoming a toxic ass clown to the Republi-Con extremist just as Butt Boi Babeu has become. This senile, sorry excuse for a sheriff needs to resign and spare the state of Arizona further ridicule.

Now these are the republicans I want to party with!

AZ FAIL
AZ FAIL

I believe--at least I feverently hope--that Joe Arpaio will not be reelected. I personally know several people who used to support Joe who now say they will support his opponents in the upcoming election, and work to remove him. They've been pushed off the Sheriff Joe bandwagon by his political vendettas, his flagrant waste of resources, the continual problems in the jails, the gross misconduct in El Mirage, and now this racist birther bullshit (and yes you're damn right it's racist.) If any of Joe's opponents makes any kind of halfway decent campaign, Joe can and will lose.

I would love to see him dragged out of his plush Wells Fargo offices in handcuffs and his wretched jails placed under Federal receivership, but frankly, I do not believe it will happen. If it does, it will only happen after the November election, when Obama has nothing to lose in his second term and doesn't have to worry about losing AZ (or the whole election) in a landslide because the right wing turns Arpaio into a fucking martyr.

If Arpaio does somehow manage to get indicted and perp-walked, I still doubt he will go to prison. Why? A friend from PA recently told me that our Joe reminds her of their Joe - the late Penn State coach Joe Paterno. I think she has a point; like Paterno, Arpaio is a somewhat doddering old man who has built a cult of personality around himself, and it is hard to tell where the person ends, and the institution begins. Just like Paterno was Penn State Football, Joe Arpaio is Sheriff Joe. When Paterno was abruptly forced out at Penn State in the midst of the Sandusky sex abuse scandal, his reason for living went away with his job. Within weeks he was diagnosed with cancer, within months, he was gone. Whether he loses the election or gets otherwise forced from office, I would not be surprised at all to see Joe Arpaio suffer a similar fate once he is no longer Sheriff Joe.

So let me see if I have this right:

Joe Arpaio wastes millions  - tens of millions - in taxpayer money.

He grossly abuses his powers to pursue even the pettiest of vendettas.

He regularly engages in racial profiling.

Inmates are regularly brutalized in his jails.

He's generally regarded as a buffoon by all law enforcement professionals.

All that was OK with National Review, but when he jumps on the birther bandwagon, that's the bridge too far?

Fuck off, NR. You lost all your credibility with your Iraq war cheerleading.

No he doesn't deserve to be reelected.  That is for sure.  But he has three candidates running against him.  Two democrats and an independent.  That is going to split the vote for those who do not want Arpaio.  Realistically, he has a lot of crazies who think he can do no wrong and he may win the election..............
