"Shadow Governor" Chuck Coughlin Spews Nonsense About New Times in Post on Sheriff Babeu; Forgets His 2010 Smear of Terry Goddard

Categories: The Guv

Chuck Coughlin, Governor Jan Brewer's adviser, seems to have forgotten about the time he tried to out Terry Goddard.

Chuck Coughlin -- a.k.a. Governor Jan Brewer's "brain" -- defended Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu while taking lame potshots at New Times in a weekend rant on his PR company's blog.

We were among the recipients who received an e-mail version of the post from the Republican campaign strategist and former Fiesta Bowl lobbyist -- which was great, because we always appreciate a good laugh.

"I was proud of Paul Babeu today for the way he ultimately handled the powder keg issue of his sexual orientation," Coughlin wrote in his blog post, Five Things to Learn From Sheriff Babeu's Press Conference [Saturday]. "It really isn't and never should be part of the discussion."

Whoa! First of all -- issue-comprehension problem. The "powder keg" wasn't the issue of Babeu's sexual orientation, it was the allegation that he and his attorney threatened his former Mexican lover with deportation, according to the boyfriend and his lawyer.

But Coughlin's not just a point-misser -- he's a hypocrite.

This is, after all, the same guy who infamously tried to out former state Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Terry Goddard in 2010.

Coughlin himself couldn't resist when, in October of 2010, a month before the general election, a rumor surfaced that Brewer might be too ill to take on a four-year term. Coughlin, using the blog of his ironically named company, HighGround, responded to the rumor by trying to point out that Brewer's opponent was gay.

Goddard denied he's gay -- to no accolades from Coughlin for the the AG handled the issue.

Coughlin did later put out a half-assed apology, and Brewer even joined the critics of Coughlin, saying it was "ridiculous" for him to question Goddard's sexuality.

As mentioned, the story with Babeu isn't that he's gay -- although few would deny that's a fascinating detail. Even if Babeu's jilted lover had been of the female persuasion, the accusation that the illegal-immigrant-bashing sheriff had tried to intimidate a Mexican national whom he believed didn't have a proper visa -- that would still have been front-page news.

Hey, Babeu's saying he never doubted that his then-lover was here legally and never threatened him with deportation, but we find this hard to believe: Not only does Jose say he was threatened with deportation if he revealed the affair, but so does his attorney.

Coughlin attempts to undermine the Babeu story our colleague Monica Alonzo broke by attacking New Times, saying that "no one reads the rag and its credibility has been below the curb level for years."

Given the worldwide attention garnered by New Times' story about Babeu, this phrase brought to mind a zinger by the master of the garbled aphorism, Yogi Berra: "Nobody goes to that restaurant anymore. It's too crowded."

Coughlin may not be a fan, but he knows from first-hand experience that we were right all along about former County Attorney Andrew Thomas and Sheriff Joe Arpaio. He told us in 2009 that he was worried about Thomas and Arpaio's abuse of power and that he'd been a victim of a trumped-up campaign-finance investigation in 2005.

Most of Coughlin's PR advice is of the no-brainer variety. Don't post embarrassing pictures on the Internet, he says -- yeah, no doubt.

Nowhere in Coughlin's advice column does he urge those in the public spotlight to tell the truth.

He suggests only that "whatever you did wrong, own it."

Babeu sure isn't taking that advice altogether. He's suddenly owning being an out gay man, who slept with a Mexican, but he continues to deny the rest of it.

Chuck Coughlin needs to piss off on this issue because it really doesn't matter to me or anyone else that the Bald Bunion of Pinal County is homosexual.

I do remember Coughlin attempting to "out" Goddard in a lame-ass attempt to win votes for GED Jan. While Coughlin finally admitted that Goddard was straight, it still won lots of votes for GED Jan.

What Coughlin does need to do is note, like Gosar did in Sunday's Arizona Republic, that the Bald Bunion abused his power as a shurf, wasted untold amounts of taxpayer dollars, and abused taxpayer trust and confidence in law-enforcement.

Voters in this state need to pull their heads out of their asses, wake the hell up and see these douchebags for what they are: Corrupt, greedy bastards intent on running a police state.

Voters need to clean house at the polls this year. It is sorely needed.

You have to understand Republicans are BIG, HUGE lier.    They are the most dishonest political party in decades.   And of course they can get support from all those that have no brain power to think for themselves.   The current candidates are the most radical, racist in our nations history.   And to think ten of millions are being wasted trying to get them elected.  Monies that could be used to better this nation.   And they are supporting Santorium, who is the most radical against women, taking away their rights.

Gay=Ok
Gay=Ok

Does it bother anyone that he hid his gayness to the voters to get elected? I have three issues that do not sit right with me and it isn't the fact that he is Gay.

1) It's the fact that the  Sheriff knowingly hid who he was from his constituents, because he knew he could never be elected in conservative Pinal County. He deceived the voter's  and denied them a chance to see the real candidate prior to his boyfriend outing him for harassment! 2) How about the fact that  he brags about deporting 100's if not 1000's of illegal's in Pinal county yet the one he was sleeping with just happened slip through his grasp!  He must have Crisco finger's from all of the sleep over with fellow state politicians. 3) How about him releasing pictures of his penis for all the world to see, while to the Republi-Tards that might seem normal, it is purely unethical, unprofessional and should be a cause for his immediate dismissal!

Not Surprised, Again

Quite possibly, the ones really benefiting from this situation with Babeu are his republican opponents, Gould and Gosar.

Can't help but find it more than a little curious that Fox News still has this story in big headlines front and center, while other news outlets have taken it down a notch and are running other stories.

I see a lot of the same in Chuck Coughlin and Scott Bundgaard. Interesting dynamics involved. I wonder if they are twin brothers of another mother?

Or perhaps the argument Bundgaard had with his "girlfriend" was because of his irrational love for Chuckie?  The "come screw me in the kiester" pose Chuckie is shown in above is worth a thousand words.

No shit! I never read anything in any New Times article criticizing Babeu for Being gay. Or for sending "kinda sorta" nekkid pictures to another consenting adult. The whole problem, and no other newspaper is talking about it is: Did Babeu know his ex-lover was in the country illegally? Did Babeu threaten to have him deported? Would Babeu allow an illegal immigrant to stay in the United States in exchange for his silence? I just sent a letter like this to the AZ Republic letters to the editor. And I bet I don't even get a nod from those guys. New Times, you guys are the only real journalists around here with any guts!!! Keep up the good work!!!

As a sheriff who pushes for tough immigration policies and whose agency participates in Operation Stonegarden, where off-duty deputies trained in immigration law enforce said immigration law, Babeu certainly knew that his boyfriend's visa did not allow him to 1.) stay in the U.S. on a continuous basis and 2.) work in the U.S. Jose did both. So the only conclusion one could reasonably draw is that Babeu knew that his boyfriend was violating immigration law and he turned a blind eye to it. When things turned sour, Jose says he (Babeu) threatened to turn him in to the Migra to shut him up. Babeu has tap-danced his way through the truth before - remember Louie Puroll's non-shootout in the desert and the bullshit story about the network of observation posts on mountaintops in Pinal County? (attached is the letter Babeu wrote to other LEA's about Puroll's fabricated shootout).

Babeu's behavior in undertaking a relationship with a man he most certainly knew was violating immigration law is inexcusable in any law enforcement officer. That this action was taken by the head of a law enforcement agency is much more damning. He is either a liar or the biggest damn fool in central AZ.

Law Enforcement Leaders,
I wish to express my deep appreciation for your swift and immediate
response in answer to our call for help during our officer involved
shooting in western Pinal County. At approximately 4 PM on April 30th,
Deputy Louie Purrol was tracking six drug smugglers (later known to be
armed) in the remote desert area south of I-8 and west of Casa Grande,
when he was ambushed and shot. Over 200 officers from local, state,
tribal nations and our federal partners responded. Your help and support
was tremendous and underscored the strength of our professional bond.

Though the investigation continues, we have several investigative
leads and have identified three other Mexican Nationals, who are victims
(robbed of cash and personal belongings) of the same suspects that shot
Deputy Purrol. The Border Patrol apprehended two of four (two escaped)
illegals along this smuggling corridor and recovered four fully loaded
AK-47s in the three points area, located along the Pima/Pinal border.
Two illegal immigrants with felony drug trafficking (cocaine) warrants
out of the mid-west were also apprehended within our security perimeter.
There were over 100 illegals apprehended within our security perimeter
in the remote desert area south of I-8 and west of Casa Grande, just
within 24 hrs we were there.

We conducted an internal AAR and also debriefed most participating
agencies this past week. We have identified the strengths and weaknesses
of our large scale tactical response, rescue and search for suspects.
We have many areas that need improvement, largely in the command and
control of such a critical incident. All leaders are in agreement that
we must rehearse by means of table top and scenario based exercises, to
ensure our coordinated response is most effective/successful.

I attached some recent Intel photos (taken in the past couple months)
which clearly show numerous armed smugglers in Vekol Valley smuggling
corridor along I-8. Yes, this is the very location of the shooting just 9
days ago.

Photo Attachment 1  ::  Photo Attachment 2

Pinal County is not a border county with Mexico, yet we have
para-military squad sized elements who are operating deep within
Arizona. This is unacceptable and must be stopped. Though PCSO Deputy
Purrol is safe and is back to work - must we have a Deputy killed by
these smugglers before the federal government hears our plea for help?

We are discussing a multi-agency response to re-secure this part of
the Sonoran Desert National Monument, that is within Pinal County. In
the interim, I have directed a change in PCSO tactics, where all
assignments for Operation Stonegarden shall be staffed in teams of two
Deputies. They shall be armed with their assigned handgun and at least
one M16/AR-15 or similar long gun/rifle.

Many of you joined me, when Sen. John McCain unveiled the McCain/Kyl
10 Point Border Security Plan, that calls for the immediate deployment
of 3,000 National Guard Soldiers to the Arizona/Mexican border.
http://johnmccain.com/borderpl...

In my opinion, the only long term solution to slow and eventually
stop the unending flow of illegals crossing into Arizona is this 10
Point Plan. It is comprehensive and it will work. If you have not seen
this youtube video with many of us and Senator John McCain, then you
should watch it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... The national
focus on border crimes couldn't have come at a better time, given the
heightened level of violence by drug and human smugglers.

Thanks again for your partnership and your immediate response, when we called for help.

Respectfully,

Paul Babeu, Sheriff Pinal County, Arizona President, Arizona Sheriff's Association

Isn't it just real hard to believe that a politically ambitious sheriff who is trying real hard to convince the world that he is the toughest dude on illegal immigration and whose department has been trained on U.S. immigration law didn't bother to check on the immigration status of the person he's boffing? Of course he did. And he knew damn well his boy toy had stepped over the line by running a business here and not returning to Mexico to live as his visa requires. But, like so many men, Babeu was thinking with something other than his cerebral cortex when it came to affairs of the ...whatever. When the love affair soured he had to do some damage control. Too bad for him Jose didn't clam up like a good boy. Babeu can spin this mess like a Duncan top and he's still fucked. That's karma.

I love how everyone believes the ex when he has actually proved nothing to date. He also is getting paid for his interviews which he knew would happen once he "exposed" Babeu. Babeu has done an outstanding job in Pinal County and has the record to show for it. Along comes Jose, who has already admitted to hacking his accounts and trashing Babeu and everyone jumps on the Jose bandwagon. Really people? I think I will hold off passing judgment until Jose can prove to me that the Sheriff threatened him. A few texts about what this could do to his business if it came out is not a threat. Nor if his family found out. I feel the Sheriff was stressing to him how embarrassing it could be. I could care less if Babeu is gay. He has never been to any event with a female( except Cheryl Chase) and has never made any statement one way or another. Most of us in Pinal County pretty much knew he was gay or heard whispers but never really cared. Afterall, he is single and it really is none of our business what he does behind closed doors as long as it is legal. Jose was here legally ( guess that pisses people off that he is not the raciest people claim he is) and like I said, to date Jose has proven nothing except that he is a publicity driven fool who is attemting to pay his way on someone else's misery.. So typical..

He proved that he had a intimate relationship with Babeu, whom denied it at first
He proved that Babeu  was posting  his junk on the internet for all to see which apparently violate POST and his own department standards
He has released text messages  that indicate his allegations have credibility

The republcan party claims to own god, jesus! The claim to own this mythical majority who they swear by all that is holy is a slient conservative majority, but nationally they get about 22%, in Arizona around 35% registering as republican party members! Guess one can claim anything one wishes, to be gay and conservative, this fellow was raised Catholic, allegedly molested by a gay priest, which many of his defenders are trying to use in his defense/excuse! But all that aside, I see the republican party today like the mirror image of the biblical Pharisee's who ruled under the Roman yoke, they were the rich, their servants the less wealthy but not the poor, since in those days preaching caring for the poor, lepers was jewish heresay, they held a leper was cursed by god, much as many of modern day republcans adhere to the belief blacks have the mark of cain on them, it was often the segregationist's battle cry, as well as their states right argument under the 10th amendment! I am reminded why Jesus stated it will be as hard for the rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven as it will be for a man to ride a camel through the eye of a needle, a really impossible task, even though we see some ultra rich giving the bulk of their wealth to charity/poor in their last will and testaments, I guess a attempt at the end to get through them pearly gates on their feet! Since us 98% in america who fall into middle class or poor will be walking a path to heaven, but the path has a fork in it, one narrow and hard, one wide and easy, guess we all get to choose, the good thing is none of these hypocrites or modern day pharisee's get to decide who gets through them pearly gates, God gave that job to Jesus, it will surely be the shock and awe to some one day, eternity is a long time to pay for ones earthly choices!

Who knew Paul Babeu was a rising star in the national Republican party? I emphasize WAS. Love the way he lies about saying he would try to get the guy deported. I suspect Joe Arpaio will be spending his time explaining how it's no big deal his friend Paul is dating someone Joe refers to as a "dirty immigrant".  That would be the same Joe that applauded his command staff running ads smearing his opponent for getting raped by his step mother.
I guess being sexually abused is OK if it's your step mother and bad if it's a priest like with Paul.

(Arpaio stated) "All these people that come over, they could come with disease. There's no control, no health checks or anything. They check fruits and vegetables. How come they don't check people? No one talks about that! They're all dirty..."

No wonder Arpaio is distancing himself from Babeu.

"Arpaio, a longtime ally, distanced himself. "All I can say is he's the sheriff of Pinal County, and it's up to him to face his issues, not me," Arpaio said.Arpaio adds that Babeu has been "begging" for an endorsement in the congressional primary. "I don't even think I'm going to get involved," Arpaio said. "We'll see what happens with Babeu."

Guess with $3.2 million in the bank, Arpaio doesn't need Chuck Coughlin's money/support enough to fall in line with Chuck's "GOP damage control" plan for Babeu, and isn't willing to tie his own political future to Babeu's either. Seems Arpaio is not only a schmuck and corrupt politician in his own right, he's also a fair-weather friend...

So Chuck "CCA" Coughlin thinks it's okay to spread vicious lies about Terry Goddard, but when it comes to telling the truth about Paul Babeu, that's not okay?!!

LMAO, Coughlin may be able to get the rank and file GOP politicians to fall in line by yanking the money strings, but Coughlin's gonna have a hard time selling this one to the public.

Gay or not gay, doesn't really matter.

Piss poor judgement/actions by a law enforcement officer, a sheriff - head of a law enforcement agency no less, and possible abuse of power, that's serious, and more a lot more serious than gossip.

THIS is what needs to be paid attention to and the pressure must be kept up to go after the real issues as Mr Stern has laid out.

Since Friday the spin from the right has been pounding away at it being over his sexuality.  It isn't.  Few care, with, ironically, the far right wingers (Tea Party) and Christian conservatives, being the main groups that would make it an issue.  It is entirely over the alleged threats and the beyond poor judgment used by the leader of one of the largest Law Enforcement Agencies in Arizona who also wants to represent our State in Congress.

The pressure needs to kept on, especially at the national level.  While the AZGOP would be happy to spin and bury this, no way in hell does the RNC want those pictures associated with one of their candidates.  And, I'd bet Ben Quayle even found those over the top.
