Paul Gosar: It's "Incomprehensible" That Paul Babeu's Trying to Play the Victim

Congressman_Paul_Gosar.jpg
Congressman Paul Gosar
After releasing two not-so-scathing statements through his campaign last week about Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu's Mexican ex-lover problems, Congressman Paul Gosar now sounds pretty peeved off with Babeu (he is one of his Republican primary opponents in the congressional race, after all).

Instead of the tone last week -- where Gosar commented on Babeu's apparent "abuse and misuse of public trust and resources" -- Gosar's put a bit more bite to his words.

"I find it incomprehensible that Paul Babeu is attempting to take the position of a victim to garner national sympathy for this self created scandal," Gosar says. "As a law enforcement officer Babeu should understand victims' rights and be ashamed of his efforts to save his lifelong political career at the expense of his ex-boyfriend, the victim of his intimidation and threats."

Now that there's a pending investigation into the claims against Babeu, it appears Gosar's getting a little more fiery -- and he's got more to say.

From the Gosar campaign:

With strong evidence against him in the form of text messages and statements by his victim and his victim's lawyers, those following this story have no reason to believe it was motivated by anything beyond fear and intimation as they claim. Recent developments have shown that Babeu's ex-boyfriend was illegally using a 10-year tourist visa to reside in the United States.  As his time in law enforcement should have taught him, ignorance is not a defense; Claims by Babeu that in his three year relationship he never questioned the legal immigration status of his partner further demonstrate the lack of judgment needed to represent the people of Arizona.

Gosar added he's "grateful" for State Attorney General Tom Horne assigning the Solicitor General to investigate the case.

The other GOP player in the race for the nomination in the state's 4th Congressional district, state Senator Ron Gould, told a Kingman newspaper that Babeu ought to at least consider resigning from his post as sheriff and pulling out of the congressional race.

Thank you  liarkiller,  for telling it like it is .   A troubled 17 year old boy is just a boy, even if he is of legal age in Massachusetts, which is why Baboo isn't in prison for this.  You are right in calling this creepy sheriff of ours a freak and a pedophile.  If he could do some time in prison he would learn what they think of pedophiles real quick.

Based on a Channel 15 story, it does appear that Babeu was also victimized by a 17 year old (ex?)student of his boarding school about a decade ago.  Poor Paul.

As Paula Dean only cared to release diabetic recipes once she got the disease and came out with it, Babeu is in support of gay marriage once he got exposed.

Baboo and Jose made such a nice looking happy couple...It's always sad when love ends...but the heart wants what the heart wants, and Sheriff studboi1's heart wanted something new and exciting. He went searching for it on Adam4adam.com, but ended up meeting with Jose who pretended he was someone else in his ad. Just like in that Jimmy Buffett "If you like pina coladas" song. It's too bad this relationship isn't ending happily like the song.

Whenever I see someone get busted for marijuana I always have a lot of sympathy for them, because I myself smoke marijuana. I also know many others who smoke it too. Plain and simple, I would never be able to go into law enforcement because my concious would not allow me to arrest others for something I myself approve of.

How can Paul Babeu, a man who has built his career off of his stance on illegal immigration, a man who will go in front of the cameras any chance he gets to talk about how his county is being over run by mexicans who are not legal residents of the US, be ok with going home and having sex with someone he claims to hate so much??

Because "tea party" radicals claim to bring it back the way out forefathers intended.

That being said, they believed in Democracy, people elected by the people not monarchy. Babeu and the Brewer clique aren't for the people, they're in it for themselves.

Why does it surprise anybody that Babeau is playing victim? this is the tactic conservatives always use when they get caught with their hands (or other body parts) in the cookie jar. Recent examples are Bundgaard, Pearce, Arpaio, and Gingrich. All victims of girlfriends, democrats, the "Obama" justice dept., and the "Liberal" media. They all lack the cajones to man up and accept responsibility for their behavior.

Poor babies!

Both Gosar and Gould have made excellent observations regarding this whole situation regarding the Bald Bunion of Pinal County.

I can't believe I'm about to say this, but I actually find myself in agreement with Gosar. Gould has zeroed in on the pictures the Bald Bunion posted on the website and stated that he exercised "poor judgment."

The MCSO shurf has remained eerily silent. I wonder why? He usually can't resist getting his two cents in, especially when it comes to political ally Babeu.

I don't believe that Jose was illegal. I do believe that he is the victim of harassment and intimidation from the Bald Bunion.

Babeu would be best advised to consider resigning his position as sheriff and dropping out of the race for CD4. I doubt he is electable at this point in time.

I think Babeu knew all along that Jose was an illegal. On CNN, the guy could barely speak any English. Babeu know what was up but it probably gave the sexual encounters an air of danger and excitement. This is not a well man.

I don't know.  When is the last time someone asked their date their "immigration status"?  Is this a thinly veiled "He's brown, he's illegal", comment?

Did he speak Spanish?  How did he dress?  Arpaio can identify an illegal from those questions.

I heard they lived together not just dated.

If you dated somebody who spoken broken English, as Jose does, wouldn't you kinda wonder....especially if you were a Sheriff in the "illegal bad zone" of Arizona.

Babeu dated him for years, and the Top Law enforcer in Pinal cty wouldn't have asked him what kind a of visa he had?  Babeu then HIRED him to work on his campaign, and FAILED to run E-Verify to see if Jose was allowed to work in the US?

Bla, Bla, Bla ... too much jumping to conclusions here when not much has been proven yet. Paul has a lot to loose here when the other almost nothing to loose. If there was jealousy, it was caused by Paul lying to his lover, claiming he wasn't seeing other men.  When Jose played "Matt" with a fake profile, Babeu trolled and was going to meet up with "Matt."  This Babeu is a professional investigator, he has told us for three years. He also said as a first responder, he never runs from danger. He is running now. He missed a board of supervisors meeting last week that he had asked to speak at.  His PCSO statistics are almost as inaccurate as his falsely advertised penis on A4A. What's a missed number or two?

Paul will coming out smelling, but a rose it won't be.

This is what happens to you when you criticize Obama and Holder. It's Nixon's enemies list crap all over again. A pathetic abuse of power.

Gosar is abandoning his constituents to save his own butt by switching districts to stay on the taxpayers payroll. It's too hard to get a job in the economy he helped destroy. We don't need Washington insiders, we need incorruptible patriots like Babeu!

Compliments to you Crookster.  Very creative use of paranoid conspiracy rebuttal argument.  I wasn't sure there was a way to take a situation like this, where a jilted gay alien lover claims the sheriff threatened him with deportation, and where the sheriff is exposed as a lurid gay dating site poser, and turn it into secret persecution by Obama and Holder because of immigration stands.  Your consistency and refusal to be bow down to those who prefer to seen facts and logic in their argument is an inspiration.

Here is the link for the state law reference county sheriff duties: http://www.azleg.state.az.us/a...

Counties have little or no say, unfortunately, over what their sheriff does.In many cases, such as Maricopa County, the Board of Supervisors chooses not to use what little authority they actually have over the sheriff. They find it easier to just roll over and take it from behind. A bit like the Pinal sheriff, I suppose.

Is that why the MCSO shurf abused and continues to abuse taxpayer dollars? The MCBOS has little to no say in what the sheriff does?

If Babeu HIRED (paid) Jose to do stuff for his campaign, and Joe only had a Visitor's visa, doesn't that mean that Babeu violated EMPLOYER Sanctions by not running E-Verify and hiring someone not allowed to work in the US?

This would also mean that Babeu was involved in more actual EMPLOYER Sanctions cases than Arpaio!

Expert Shot

YES!  And it also means that an individual can sue a law enforcement agency who is not prosecuting employers on behalf of the government.  That part of SB1070 is still in force and should be used by the proponents of maintaining the civil rights of Mestizo American Citizens.

Nothing yet has demonstrated to me, conclusively, that Babeu threatened deportation.  Jose and his lawyer both say it was referenced in conversation (or that's what they perceived) but I've seen nothing in written to that effect.  Babeu's claim could be factual; that Jose hacked Babeu's website and twitter accounts and Babeu demanded he stop.  I am no Babeu apologist and I would be more than happy if he resigned along with his bigoted border campaign.  Can anyone shed some light on what I'm missing here?  I think Jose may be the one in trouble here.

Gettingtothe truth
Gettingtothe truth

I would agree.  Paul Babeu did not threaten deportation, this was stated in a letter from his attorney.  However, in Babeu news conference, he did state that no one representing him or his camp for congressman threaten Jose with deportation.   I find the primary issue in this matter to be Paul Babeu, a law enforcer of illegal immigrants allowing an expired visa to  remain in this country.

So because his attorney stated it it is truth? Lawyers are bigger liars than the crooks!

Jose allegedly complied with Babeu's request to return control of the social media sites once the relationship went sour.

However, Babeu's attorney issued a cease and desist order claiming that Babeu continues to be the victim of felony offenses committed by Jose.

If Babeu is to be believed, why didn't he just submit a complaint to the local police? Have them investigate and if Jose did in fact commit crimes, have him charged?

I suspect that there is much more to what Babeu is accusing than he is telling.

Rob
Rob

I agree with much of what you say; the investigation needs to be done and let the chips fall where they may.  I don't think anyone's ever going to know exactly what took place.

That being said, yes, Jose does have some immigration issues to deal with.
At the same time, what Babeu has alleged against Orozco are felony complaints.
So, another valid question is; why didn't Babeu do anything when it happened?

Of course, we all know the answer to that.  But it's still not an excuse.

And, it also demands that we consider the possibility of other issues like this existing in Babeu's past where, out of fear of being outed, he didn't follow through with legal obligations. Not just as a citizen, and not just as an employer but as the County Sheriff.

This has been the best comment made to date reference Paul babeu and this debacle. Well said.

I was a real fan of Paul Gosar. His most recent statements are political mush and he looks ignorant when making them.

Seems Babeu hired someone to WORK on his campaign who only had a Visitor's visa and who couldn't legally work in the US.

Is the EMPLOYER not responsible to use things like E-Verify?  And Babeu would know that!

Rob
Rob

Yes, the Employer is responsible for conducting the E Verify process.  Also realize that E Verify isn't Federally mandated, it's an Arizona requirement and penalties have little bite. (Nevermind that no agency has been tasked with enforcing E Verify)

What's also being overlooked is what needs to be done prior to E Verify.  A company can hire and put someone to work without E Verify being done (up to 3 days).

However, there is a form that must be completed and verified PRIOR to being hired.

Form I9.

Failure to have I9's completed carries a far greater penalty than not conducting E Verify.  E Verify is only a requirement in Arizona; an I9 is a Federal requirement.

If an I9 was completed he would have had to use his passport with the proper stamp and/or documents as one of the 2 forms of ID (the I9 form fully describes what's needed), unless he had false papers.
As he was here on a tourist visa, he would not have the proper forms authorizing work; tourist visas do not allow for work or school.

There's a lot of questions here....

Tommy Collins

It appears Jose was working illegally in the United States, being paid and most likely not paying taxes. I expect IRS and AZ Revenue to be interested in why they haven't received a tax return from Jose...

Rob

Like a lot of other things in this story, the paid/non-paid status has had several variations.
And, I've noticed they all tend to come from either Babeu or his attorney/Campaign manager.  But, you are right and all this is purely speculation at this point.

At first it was understood the guy was strictly a volunteer and received no compensation or remuneration whatsoever.
Then, in interviews last weekend, Babeu stated that he did start off as a volunteer but was moved to paid status.
Then, later in the week it went back to volunteer but that he was compensated for some of his expenses.

I'll certainly agree that if he was a non-paid volunteer throughout the affair, then things like an I-9 and EVerify become a moot point.  Likewise, I am unfamiliar with the working of campaigns and how they employ people (thanks for the info).  Though, in what I had read, it is essentially like any other job, when it comes to paid campaign workers.  But, we all know that employers often find ways around those things too.

AZGregory
AZGregory

Most people who work on campaigns are volunteers and none of the reports I have seen have indicated that he was paid as an employee so it is jumping to conclusions to say Babeau violated the law in "employing" him.  Even when people are paid by campaigns to do work like this, it is quite common for the campaign to pay them through a company name or LLC. In that case, they might need an EIN number, which you can get for an LLC or corporation and there is no need for Everify.  It is actually a nice little gravy train for friends and family members especially with campaign organizations that are flush with cash from right-wing suckers who fall for fear-based appeals for donations. Gingrich companies and insiders apparently have been paid close to a million bucks for services to the campaign and Cain cashed in lavishly as well.  Given Babeau's single-minded focus on fear of illegal immigrant invaders and his former status as poster boy in the illegal immigrant hate blogosphere, I would not be surprised if he has not raised oodles of out of state cash and spent some on his lover for campaign "services".  Lots of facts to be known before any assumption of criminal activity can be made, however.

WhoKnows
WhoKnows

So he got nailed by both federal and state laws!

Rob
Rob

Well, thing is WK....You can actually put someone to work without having put their SSN through E Verify.  The law allows for up to 3 days before the process must be done and validated.

However, you cannot hire someone until they have completed their I9 and the company representative has verified the documents as legitimate for the I9.

Obviously, he worked for him for more than 3 days so yes, E Verify should have been done.

WhoKnows
WhoKnows

And Jose WORKED for the campaign of a guy that claims to be tough on illegals, and not only didn't run E-Verify, but there should be an I-9!
