MCSO Inmate Escapes In Laundry Cart (Two Weeks Ago); Arrested in New Mexico

Jairo Contreras
A minimum-security inmate at one of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's jails escaped "several days ago," but was arrested this afternoon at his girlfriend's house in New Mexico, the MCSO announced this afternoon.

If this is the first you're hearing about an escaped MCSO inmate, that's because the Sheriff's Office didn't mention it to the media until this afternoon, when the escapee was in custody.

Additionally, "several days ago," we've come to find out, actually means inmate Jairo Contreras has been on the run for about two weeks.

Again, there was no press release from the MCSO about the escape, but when Contreras was arrested this afternoon, Arpaio decided to alert the media -- and boast his agency's "cell phone technology" (which, from the sound of things, is little more than calling a cell phone provided and asking for a cell phone number's call history).

As far as sophistication goes, the escape wasn't exactly the Shawshank Redemption -- dude got pushed out in a laundry cart.

"We believe that he got into an oversized laundry cart, covered himself, and was pushed out," MCSO spokesman Jeff Sprong tells New Times.

According to the MCSO, the agency's "cell phone technology" led them to Contreras' girlfriend in Santa Fe. Federal authorities, as well as detectives in Santa Fe, put the girlfriend's house under surveillance and eventually spotted Contreras.

After a brief car chase, he was taken into custody.

According to the MCSO, Contreras was in jail on a "minor" (a convenient adjective to use when describing an inmate who escaped from custody two weeks ago) burglary charge.

Sprong says Contreras was about to be released from custody on a work furlough when he escaped.

Contreras, the MCSO says, will be extradited back to the Valley, where he'll face additional charges.

MCSO --  How to reduce jail overcrowding.    Turn you back and/or close your eyes.    Then they only have to worry about the ones that OTHER agencies catch and return.
What a bunch of dunderheads with a dunderhead-in-chief at the top.

Typical Arpaio, doing nothing to protect the public from his misdeeds.

Thanks for the story, Mr. King. Thanks for all the stories. Thanks for everything.  : )

He probably thought that the new times would be critical if he alerted the public about his own DO assisting in the escape. This is an election year.

LOL....so old Bozo Joe couldn't recall a prisoner escaped and put the public at risk by keeping it a secret and out of the public media...
Nice job Bozo Joe.

"Contreras, the MCSO says, will be extradited back to the Valley, where he'll face additional charges."

This is motivation to be desperate.  There is ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE for Old Saggy Balls to not alert the media and publish this guy's picture.  In not doing so, he put us at risk in Maricopa County by not alerting us.  As it was, the guy was desperate enough to get into a car chase.  It would have been nice if a citizen had an opportunity to turn him in two weeks ago.

AZC says the laundry cart was pushed to the truck by an MCSO DO.  Where does MCSO find these idiots? Most couldn't get jobs as a Walmart greeter!

Seems MCSO waited two weeks to show their complete incompetence on this one!

Once again the leadership maleficence shows at MCSO...

Looks like more than a short car chase. They locked down three public schools and brought in SWAT for a two hours before the arrest.

The is NO EXCUSE for MCSO having not made this information public. TWO weeks ago when it happened.

MCSO deserves better than the shurf.

We, the taxpayers, deserve better.

Ah, it's the old "got into an oversized laundry cart, covered himself, and was pushed out" trick.  No wonder it worked.

Could it be that perhaps Jeffery Higgins was working at the time of this escape ? Hic Hic !

I have to wonder how many other inmates have escaped right under the watchful sagging eye of arpaio, that the general public does not yet know about? The Flaccid Fucker keeping these escapes quiet, is surely putting the safety of the public at risk.

James - I am certain this was a DoJ plot to make our great Sheriff Joe look bad.

I bet when MCSO releases the surveillance video of his escape - should be as soon as next October - we'll see that the "guy" pushing that laundry cart was Eric Holder.

And the getaway driver?  Well, remember when Obama was here A COUPLE WEEKS AGO and we saw him run away from our Great Governor?  Well, it wasn't the Makers Mark on her breath that caused that.

See how it all adds up?
(to a tea-tard, at least).

So what do you suppose should be done about this situation ? Will it be swept under the rug as everything else is ? How long can you MCSO employees go on working for what is obviously an incompetent, senile& dangerous old man ? When will the good law enforcement officers in MCSO say enough is enough ?

Bobby

As it should be.

I strongly disagree, YPS !  This is criminal negligence, plain and simple !

You folks at MCSO deserve SO MUCH BETTER.

I feel badly that you have to put up with this ineptness and mental instability.

When I see stuff like this and know how it makes my sisters and brothers now doing law enforcement feel, I cringe.

The job is tough enough without having to work for a blathering fool.

Dude you couldn't survive as a DO. Shut your pie hole til you have been on the yard with 900 criminals and you, or been face to face with societies worst. It's fine if you want to badmouth the Sheriff that goes with his job, but don't run your mouth about somthing you could or would not do. Go back to your latte and your keyboard, or man up and get a job walking a tier with people who want to hurt you every minute.

If he was not captured, we still would not know.

From AZC:

According to a statement from the Sheriff's Office, Contreras, who was
assigned to a laundry detail, snuck out of the jail in an oversized
laundry cart being pushed by a detention officer.

Thanks for the research Tommy.  We do deserve better.  Public safety?  Not on Arpaio's watch.  He cares not about us, but only about what the release of an escape advisory would mean to him.

Thanks for that link Tommy. You are correct ,MCSO had an obligation to make this information public. I suppose we can't have bad publicity for shurf Arpaio, public saftey be dammed.

He is just not there to see the holes in his leaky ship.  He does not look for them, does not see them, and therefore they don't exist.  Tight ship.

How could public safety be at risk with a Mexican illegal alien?  These are such law abiding people who just want a better life for their families.  I'm sure Jairo Contreas was just burglarizing the home of some racist hater of brown people so he could feed is starving family --  you know, doing a job that most Americans won't do!

It will be forgotten, like most other issues. We will continue working around the three ring circus for as long as you all continue voting the guy into Office. The good law enforcement officers are still able to do their job. In fact, a lot of stellar police work goes on outside the scope of the media circus. As long as you work outside the pet projects, you are left alone to do your job.

The longer Arpaio runs MCSO the more MCSO personnel will pick up the corrupt leanings of the old geezer.  The culture is perverted and that happens from the top down.

LOL dont act as if its all that Lessthan...it isnt.  Its county jail, not prison. And I wouldnt be a DO for MCSO if they paid me a million dollars! But not because im afraid, far from it in fact.  I wouldnt want to work for someone so senile, and for a department so ineptly ran who also covers up crimes by their own. thanks for playing, have a nice day!
