Jan Brewer Invited to Testify Before Senate Subcommittee on SB 1070. Governor's Apparently Not Thrilled With The Idea

brewermug.jpg
Governor Brewer's "thanks, but no thanks" face.
New York Democratic Senator Charles Schumer sent a letter to Governor Jan Brewer yesterday, asking her to give testimony before his Senate Subcommittee on Immigration about Senate Bill 1070.

According to a release from Schumer's office, the point of Brewer's testimony would be "to hear whether she still believes the law to be necessary given the gains made in securing the nation's southwestern border."

The date Schumer chose is April 24 -- the day before the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the case on the state's controversial immigration law.

According to multiple media reports, that smells like a "publicity stunt" to the governor's spokesman, Matthew Benson.

Benson's out of the office today, according to the governor's office, and he didn't immediately respond to an email from New Times for more details.

As of now, according to reports, the governor's not planning on attending, even though she'll be in town.

Take a look at Schumer's letter below, requesting some valuable discourse and/or a "publicity stunt":

February 23, 2012

The Honorable Jan Brewer
Governor of Arizona
1700 West Washington
Phoenix, Arizona 85007

Dear Governor Brewer:

As Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Immigration, Refugees and Border Security, I am responsible for directing the Senate's immigration reform efforts and for conducting oversight of the Department of Homeland Security's efforts to secure our borders and ports of entry.

In this capacity, I write to invite you to testify at a hearing on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 entitled "Examining the Constitutionality and Prudence of State and Local Governments Enforcing Immigration Law."  At this hearing, we will be examining whether it is both constitutional and sound public policy for states to enact broad laws, such as SB 1070 in Arizona, that are designed to deter and punish illegal immigration.  It will be held the day before the Supreme Court's Oral Argument in State of Arizona et al., v. The United States of America to make it easier for you to attend the hearing in the event you will already be travelling to Washington, D.C. to attend the oral argument.

You recently were quoted as saying that "SB 1070 was Arizona's way of saying that we won't wait patiently for federal action any longer. If the federal government won't enforce its immigration laws, we will."

As you likely know, in August 2010, I wrote and passed The Emergency Border Security Supplemental Appropriations Act.   This act provided over $600 million of reinforcements for border security. The funds were used to hire 1,000 new Border Patrol agents to permanently patrol our southern border and 250 new agents for our ports of entry.  It created a "strike force" that can be deployed in different areas of the southwest border depending on where the need is greatest at any particular moment. It provided funds to deploy unmanned drones to fly along our southern border and provide our patrol officers on the ground with real-time information on unlawful border crossings.  The bill also provided funds to: improve communications capabilities between federal border enforcement and state and local officers along the border; construct forward operating bases for the border patrol to use that are actually located on the border itself rather than hundreds of miles away; give Immigration and Customs Enforcement resources to conduct investigations of drug-runners, money-launderers, and human traffickers along our border; and increase the number of federal agents on our border and bolster the number of prosecutors and court resources along our border so that wrongdoers can immediately be brought to justice.

This legislation has achieved dramatic results at the border.  The Border Patrol is better staffed today than at any time in its 87-year history, having doubled the number of agents from approximately 10,000 in 2004 under President Bush to more than 21,300 today.  Nationwide Border Patrol apprehensions of illegal immigrants decreased from nearly 724,000 in FY 2008 to approximately 340,000 in FY 2011, a 53 percent reduction, indicating that far fewer people are attempting to illegally cross the border.   At the same time, the Department of Homeland Security matched the decreases in apprehensions with increases in the seizure of illegal currency, drugs, and weapons along the Southwest border.  Since this bill was passed, DHS has seized 74 percent more currency, 41 percent more drugs, and 159 percent more weapons along the Southwest border as compared to prior years.  And, over the same period, ICE made over 30,936 criminal arrests along the Southwest border, 19,563 of these arrests were of drug smugglers and 4,151 of these arrests were of human smugglers.

Given the new level of security at our Southern Border as result of the August 2010 law, it would be extremely beneficial for the Committee to hear from you with regard to: 1) why you signed SB 1070 in 2010; 2) whether you still believe SB 1070 is necessary in light of the substantially increased security situation along our southern border; and 3) whether you favor SB 1070 being made a permanent law irrespective of whether conditions further improve along the southern border.   We would also appreciate any other insight you can provide regarding the legality and prudence of enacting state immigration laws.  As you frequently ask the President to visit the southern border to discuss border security, we expect that you will be eager to engage in a productive dialogue with the Congressional Committee responsible for acting upon any border security recommendations you provide.

I thank you for your attention to this important matter, and hope to be able to see you at our hearing to discuss how best to protect the people of Arizona and the United States in a manner that is legal, effective, and in accordance with America's finest values and traditions.

Sincerely,

Charles E. Schumer
Chairman
Subcommittee on Immigration, Border Security and Refugees

We'll let you know when -- or if -- Benson gets back to us.

no - nitpicking about niggling little things as an excuse to refute the entire argument equals troll.   You call it spewing mush because you don't agree?  This is the life that many are living whether or not you agree or like - if you cannot admit the reality there can be no working together towards resolution so the old divide and conquer still works really well until such time as you are forced to see the truth because you yourself have been reduced to the same circumstance - amazing and sad that human fallibility is so predictably manipulated over and over.  You may be educated but you still know nothing and cannot even see what is before your very eyes.

Response to Tommy Collins stating that what I write is "spewing mush."

There are no entry level jobs for our children - the illegals have them all.  Having a job as a teen is part of growing up process and necessary for their development.  We have bred many not so smart people who will always need those jobs but now they have nothing.  It is not fair to discount them, ridicule them for their lesser capacity - they also need dignity of a job but they cannot work alongside illegals - once illegals get in a position they sabotage everybody else and will even threaten life - these people cannot speak for themselves - they have tried - but everybody chooses to insult them for being lesser.  It is wrong.  No immigrants till full employment for citizens is common sense.  Charity begins at home and justice begins next door.  Yet our very government rewards the wealthy amongst us for offshore charitable initiatives, not domestic just as they reward putting OUR jobs overseas.  Citizens have been propagandized to diminish and disrespect the human value of other citizens who need and want those jobs.  It is the wholesale displacement of one population for another and the very fact of it should cause any illegal great pause. People who have bought into this mindset  might  care to reconsider their own humanity - along with the churches, our "spiritual leaders", who also have become criminally negligent imho.  Yes there is no other word but TRAITOR.

I do agree with you not to be a one issue voter.  Even if all illegals were deported we would still have huge job on our hands and since our corruption and the complications of it does not stop at our borders some argue that we owe the illegals but I think we need to clean up our own house and put in order first, then be responsible for what has been done to others.  Conversely, I think it is irresponsible and possibly criminal of us to allow them to remain here, not just towards our own displaced citizens but also for the crime illegals suffer due to their status and because the hope of the PTB is to hook them into debt slavery and they, like us, did not realize what a criminal and unwinnable situation that would be.  They, like us, find it a bit unbelievable that our government would allow people to go into debt that would be impossible to pay off but that is exactly what has been happening and since this unwinnable situation is a requisite of basic life these days, the kindest most responsible thing to do is send them back home until such time as we have turned this situation around - unless we all fight together but illegals have been brainwashed to only see through colored prism.  They are screaming race not realizing that citizens are equally used and discarded as so much trash once the cost of their human needs can no longer be avoided.  The only benefit that I see from according them status is that international governing bodies care more for their rights than those of US citizens.  So, for example, when illegals receive healthcare and citizens are allowed to die, we as citizens could fight for equality for ourselves if we could only get it together - and if we could only gather the information (constant violations of FOIA) and funding to do so.  Because it is quite clear to me that international governing bodies care nothing for the lives of ordinary US citizens.

You lost me with a first sentence that defies reality.

2 of my 3 children who have, within the last 3 years, become of working age, have had no problem in finding one of those entry level jobs that you claim illegals have taken.
Likewise, all of their friends have encountered no such problem.

But, I don't need my children's experience to tell me the facts; I can see it clearly myself.  Trips to grocery stores, restaurants, car washes, movie theaters, big box stores, electronics stores, clothing stores...every facet of retail... and the list goes on.

Do yourself a favor and get out of your basement and walk into a Walmart, Target, Officemax, Best Buy, Fry's or Safeway...Stop and get a pizza, a burger or a sub... and go see a movie. Go to a mall. And count the number of kids working.  Good old American kids.

If I were not paying attention why would employees of stores complain to me?  During the bail-outs the Mexican produce guys at my local Safeway made it their mission, in extremely broken English, to share with customers their idea that the US citizens should have been given the bail-out monies with the stipulation that they pay off their mortgages, buy a US make vehicle and take early retirement if they were of age to do so.

Yes, it is the supermarkets and Walmarts where I see US born working.  Burger King?  nahhh.  Any kind of roofing, lawn-care - anything that was once entry level entrepreneurial - not in the least.  But those who I see working at the stores will quickly complain that they are only ever allowed to work full time hours (enough to share living quarters with someone) only one week per quarter - just enough to make them ineligible for food stamps and AHCCCS - so clearly these large employers work with the government to boost faux employment numbers and keep people from having the benes that make life sustainable.  These are not teens living with parents while getting through high school, or college - these are young single adults that do not get paid enough to start life.  If you only work part-time, even if you get married - what if both of you can only get part-time jobs - can't afford an apartment, can't afford wheels, classes, kids - nothing - just scrambling from check to check.  And at Walmart the other day the woman cashier was once a highly paid accountant - claimed it took her 3 years to land that low wage Walmart cashier job.  Yes, I am up by Bell Rd where so many businesses have shuttered their doors.   Perhaps you should leave your ivory tower Scotchdale enclave and get out a bit more yourself.

I am against all immigration.  Let domestic engineers have full employment first - both kinds - ranging from the rocket scientist to the housekeeper.   Ditto everything and everyone else.  Other nations practice this common sense and nobody is screaming that they are racist or xenophobic.  We pay our government to protect and support our lives, not be planetary police, line their own pockets at our expense, force us into serfdom/slavery - it is way out of control and bringing in foreign labor to displace domestic labor is part of the unequal balance of power - disempowerment of the people - make them scramble for mere survival, while others, untouched cannot believe the reality - divide and conquer.  Government is the employee of the people and they need a pink slip!

After we have full employment of citizens and have made education affordable so that people might advance beyond the dead-end "entry level" positions - then we can consider allowing foreign workers in again.  It is the only logical and fair thing to do if this government wishes to regain any credibility at all with the people.  The international community is aware of what is being done to US workers while you claim ignorance Rob.  Google Hershey foreign workers - yes even for a summer job packing chocolate foreign workers get preference - even at our own National Park affiliated resorts foreign workers get preference.  This is not even funny - there is no equivalent for US students to go elsewhere and work on such massive scale.

Wake up Rob. Illegal immigration affects Americans on every single level. What you and others are constantly confused by, is your narrow definition of illegal alien, as being someone hispanic or Mexican. Then you assume it's all about grunt labor, or blue collar jobs. Well it isn''t. Try to understand this. What illegal immigration is about, is the same as what outsourcing insourcing and all the other treasonous crap Wall Street and our "Representatives" do to American CITIZENS. Expand your thinking for a change as to how this issue affects people. There is a computer program who occasionally writes a column, Rob Sanchez, and despite the fact he has tons of experience in computer programing, he has constantly expereineced getting enough work. He investigats the issue now, and he has exposed the whole tech industry here. IT'S ABOUT BOTTOM LINE WAGES IN FORMERLY HIGH PAYING JOBS TOO. All of these tech companies, don't want to hire American tech employees, Rob has found out through research and through consulting with his friends in the field, BECAUSE THEY CAN IMPORT PROGRAMMERS FROM INDIA FOR HALF THE PRICE. Just as they can export factories to China and while thousands of Americans lose their jobs, the stock owners and CEO's of those companies get rich paying Chinese laborers a few cents an hours. You can continue thinking narrowly on this topic as so many people in the U.S. do, or you can look at the big picture, which isn't pretty, and will never benefit your friends, family, or even yourself. That's why when people tell me politely, Bobby why don't you stick to worrying about California, I reply , because this issue is affecting Americans in every single state. Shouldn't your own fellow citizens be considered first by you? You are living in the U.S., aren't you?

Bobby
Bobby

Rob, what the hell is the difference what kind of American illegal immigration affects. It shouldn't make a difference if the person is a teen, adult, single mother, etc., as long as citizens of the US. are affected by it, IT'S WRONG, IT'S IMMORAL. Even the demented President Bush Jr. told Americans he would consider them first for jobs, AFTER AMERICANS AGREE TO HIS AMNESTY. How did that work out? LOL

Rob
Rob

"People are stuck in those part time jobs because that is all there is."

How can they be?

I thought you said all the illegal immigrants have them?

sarum
sarum

I see you have purchased the propaganda hook line and sinker.  People are stuck in those part time jobs because that is all there is yet you persist in the myth that if they only keep looking they will find a full-time position with benefits and a future?  Please.  Career paths have all but been eliminated entirely.  An entry level job mostly stays just that - to even call them entry - level positions is a misnomer as in falsehood as in big fat lie because only one of many will get to join management.   And down the road if they have done everything right and are looking forward to retirement - they will be forced into the type position that enables their employer to create false cause to dismiss them and separate them from their decades of accrued earnings.  This just sucks all the way around - it is more common than not - hence the rage.

Stick to one thing you say.  There are not enough jobs for any category teen or adult  but you wish to accuse me of bouncing around?  Obviously your point is to refuse to admit that there is a problem and to attempt to discredit the messenger - which is why there is such a rage building - these tactics of yours are not reasonable and do not serve to lead to solutions except for you to assuage your conscience and continue to ignore, avoid and evade.  I'll bounce some more for you - what is called a job is often just torture - how long do you expect people to loyally sell jewelry that they themselves will never be able to afford that lifestyle on their wage?  How long could you personally stand to work in a call center?  Or the only job sector that has had growth in recent years - collections or repossessions?  None of these jobs work into a career or even anything resembling the "American Dream" and your solutions is to go get an education - yeah and many thousands of dollars of debt for jobs that still aren't available and watching people get their student loan amounts taken out of their old age social security is not particularly inspiring to go that route.  Clue in - AZ is a leading state for student loan default - thanks to the low wages - the whole system is not working but you wish to buy the lies of the 1% when other nations are outpacing us rapidly and showing that they can do much better?

Tell you what - I am heading towards the big 60 and its the God's honest truth that in my lifetime I have never seen any of my peers get ahead and be able to have the American Dream lifestyle without doing something wrong as in criminal.  Not a single solitary one.  End of story.   Until you can accept this reality and quit making excuses for marginalizing humans and denying them opportunity, citizen humans, you will never be able to make contribution to solving the problem, you will just keep parodying the talking points put out by the 1%.

Rob
Rob

No ivory towers or Snottsdale address for me sarum.  I've had a lifetime in retail and do in fact own my own small business with my wife.

You need to stick to one thing, not bounce around.  Your initial post claims "there are no entry level jobs for our children".  Now you mix in adults.

There are plenty of entry level jobs out there. You note supermarkets and Walmart....try restaurants, movie theaters, clothing stores, jewelry stores, call centers....there's a world out there!  You seem fixated on a certain segment of the service industry but that's not the only avenue.  Likewise, the service industry is far from being dominated by illegal immigrants.  While there's no doubt illegal immigrants are in the areas you mention, perhaps you are also confusing those that are Americans who happen to have brown skin?  I've several cousins of Mexican descent who own very successful landscaping operations.

As for full time hours....When it comes to "our children", well there's laws against that.  You might want to check into that.  Employers, for years, have focused on hiring part time for many reasons, not the least of which is maintaining their bottom line.  Labor is the single largest controllable expense a business has.  It is what it is.  If someone is expecting a part time job to pay all the bills, they have issues.

Bobby
Bobby

Funny, in California it's also a problem, as sarum said. You've got thousands of kids, of all races, goofing around, loafing around shooting hoops, hanging around all summer with nothing to do, because they cannot find a parttime job. So perhaps you could start a job referal business and make big money helping some of these kids.

Bobby,

Michigan, Arizona, California, and Nevada are four of the hardest-hit recession states in the country.

Michigan had 15% unemployment until the Bush/Obama administrations stepped in and helped keep the auto industry, based in MI, afloat.

Arizona had mostly construction jobs which mushroomed into 8% unemployment when the housing market went bust. The same can and should be said of California (11.7% unemployment) and Nevada (12.6% unemployment).

It's not fair for ANY voter, any taxpayer, to expect that the president and Congress come in and fix a $16 trillion deficit literally overnight. The president and Congress are not superman. The bar for them to meet is set way too high.

I personally believe that public servants should be held to a higher standard because of the fact that they receive my tax money as their paycheck. In the end, however, the president and Congressional representatives, as well as your own states' lawmakers, are people too and deserve to be treated the same way we would like to be treated. This is something we tell our children, to treat each other as we would like to be treated. Adults seem to completely ignore that fact when they begin berating their lawmakers for not doing exactly what they said they would.

If you have any issues regarding the welfare of your state, you need to contact your state representatives, your governor, or your Congressional representatives. They are the ones who can solve these problems you routinely complain about.

Bobby
Bobby

LOL, I don't have to "look around". I worked in the medical field a long time, I have owned a small family owned bakery, and I don't need a part-time job. I've told you what I see here in Southern California, and it completely agrees with what sarum said about Arizona. It's tough for kids because illegal aliens are doing those jobs, and since those jobs never pay enough(that's why they have traditioinally been called "part time",) many of those people apply for and get State aid to help them stay in California. P.S. Please don't give me the line that people here illegally don't rerceive state aid. This is a lie that the State of California, under the Democrat party has told for years, and they recently got exposed as the liars the left is, when it was discovered that illegal aliens DO GET STATE AID. This is at least the case in California, Arizona I don't know about. They should look into it, but then the Democrats would probably scream "racism".

Rob
Rob

Hmm...if I had to guess, I'd think you are out of a job and having a hard time finding one.

The entry level jobs which you are speaking of are out there...by no means are they as plentiful as they were 6-7 years ago, but they are there.

And it's not illegal immigrants taking them.

Good luck on your job search.

sarum
sarum

Oh PLEASE!  I know plenty from the last amnesty who are stuck trying to pay off their student loans for jobs they cannot get either.  How many jobs are there for those looking?  They simply are not.  Most of these jobs force you to apply on-line.  Most of the kids no longer have internet at home.  But even for those that do - the in-store kiosks to apply for a job almost never work and the websites on-line to apply also almost never work.  It is quite intriguing that they can outsource personnell  to a computer program that does not work.  I think it would be well worth a serious investigation as to those who do get the positions - did they even apply on the internet or through the in-store computers for that purpose or did they get the job some other way?  Because I know plenty of seekers of all ages and what you say has not been their experience.

Rob

Big difference between not looking for one and not being able to find one.

They are there.  Just because FOX and right wing extremist blogs tell you they aren't doesn't mean they it's true.

Jan Brewer sucks!! Arizona can't wipe its own ass and she wants the state to fund border anything? Just simply deny anyone who cannot prove US citizenship any and all state or federal services and assistance. You want to work, you get that green card and get in line. Business owners and contractors will just have to pay hefty taxes and fines for hiring those who are not citizens UNLESS they have filed with the state and are certified to employ illegals with greencards. Frequent checks will be made to prove this and will be paid for by employers. The minimum wage is required at least.  No crap wages.
Oh and buy homegrown. Quit funding the cartels by simply not buying what they sell. If you;re partaking in something other than smoking some bud, You're in need of some help.

Ha!  Many Arizona citizens cannot afford to wipe their own asses and have to exercise extreme strategery in order to be able to do so.  Thanks to our traitorous politicians, this being a right-to-work state RON PAUL and the influx of illegals who are proving J Gould to be correct in his assertion that he could hire 1/2 the working class to kill the other half.  And yes, none of the kids in these parts have jobs but they all have weed, and heroin, and they tell me that they get it for free.  So thinking that SB1070 is merely for the purpose of providing free labor for those contracted to benefit from our prison labor system - no - those people are global - they care nothing for the nationality of their labor - they are farming these kids with free drugs and our LE will collude with the PTB to put our kids behind bars for free labor - a small investment for years of free labor - that is why our dear governor is only proposing the feudal midevil patronage system for all government employees that are not LE.  Divide and conquer.  Can't piss off LE too much - they might wake up and switch sides!  Although I am not feeling the follow-up on the theft of their pension funds - an OCCUPY worthy complaint.

The good thing is the GOP is turned into a 4 ring circus, with Romney, Santorum, Gingrich & Paul as the best and brightest they have to offer, in 2008 I thought no one could be funnier than poor McCain the most unpopular republican in the GOP and his running mate the most inept, unlikely vice president in history but guess one should remember a old corny saying, never say never!

The one problem with SB1070 is the separation of powers between what states have authority over and those accorded to the federal government, its is the achilles heel in this statute! But like many issues SB1070 was never anything more than a political plow by the GOP to garner the xenophobic vote, the border line 10th amendment crowd and of course these two groups pretty much make up a large fringe in the GOP now a days! Historians no doubt will have a field day writing of this past decade and the birthers, oath takers, xenophobic dixiecrats who pretty much it seems moved to Arizona in mass!

To heck with accepting this extremist/ALEC/racist governor !  Join our official recall.  The main stream media (except for Phoenix New Times) doesn't want you to know about it ! Please go to :       recallbrewer.com where you can email us for recal petitions or download our recall petitions via PDF from our website. Just make sure to go to a professional copy shop and have them copy the recall petition in "legal size" and that it is front and back and exactly the same as our pdf petition.
