Don Stapley, Maricopa County Supervisor Who's Suing County, Files to Run for Congress in CD9

Don Stapley, a longtime Maricopa County Supervisor, plans to run for Congress.

Maricopa County Supervisor Don Stapley has filed with the Federal Election Commission to run for Congress in Arizona's newly created 9th District.

The County Supervisor has served as one of five members of the Board of Supervisors since 1996, and is currently suing the county for $15 million due to his past legal battles with Sheriff Joe Arpaio and former County Attorney Andrew Thomas.

In late 2008, Stapley was rocked by 118 felony and misdemeanor counts related to alleged omissions on his financial disclosure forms. The attempted prosecution caused a major rift between the lawmen and county leaders, resulting in numerous lawsuits and accusations by Arpaio that the entire Board, plus judges, lawyers and county employees, were corrupt.

The legal attack on Stapley and the others fell to pieces because of lack of evidence and apparent ethical breaches by Arpaio, Thomas and those working for him.

Stapley had also been accused of defrauding donors to his campaign for a leadership role in the National Association of Counties, in which he ultimately served as president. Charges against Stapley were tossed aside by Gila County Attorney Daisy Flores, who said Stapley's 2009 arrest in the NACo investigation showed that Arpaio's office was carrying out a political vendetta.

With his filing, Stapley -- a Republican -- joins a long list of hopeful contenders for the new congressional seat, including Democrats Andrei Cherny and Kyrsten Sinema.

He gets screwed by Arpaio so he sues us.   The laws are wrong.    We didn't do anything to him.     Let the people who did the wrong doing pay the price.     Make them pay these suits and they won't be so cavalier about breaking the law with no penalty.    No one should get elected to any office in a county they just sued for 15 million dollars.     Take a hike ass wipe.

Stapely doesn't stand a chance of winning CD9,nor does Sinema. At least these two cowards will be out of office. I only wish more of these useless politicians (both R's & D's) would run for office that would be one way to take out the political garbage.

You are ignorant to say Sinema is a coward.  She has been battling the Republican legislators toe to toe for years with very little support from her colleagues.  I spent a painful day last session attending the hearings when Pearce and Gould, both drunk with the absolute power they had been wielding, tried to pass even more extreme anti-immigrant legislation including the repeal of birthright citizenship.  Sinema spent hours systematically rebutting arguments by the complete idiots on these committees and masterfully cross-examined Pearce (who testified as sponsor) and their so-called legal expert from California.  She made them look like fools.  The other Dem senators were less effective and far less aggressive and Sinema did all the heavy lifting.  She deserves a lot of credit and thanks by all of us.  Whoever is trying to paint her as a coward is engaging in cheap political chicanery with a hidden agenda to support another candidate.  Do your homework and stop defaming one of the few smart, hard-working leaders in this state.

Sinema is nothing more than an opportunist that likes to take credit for other peoples accomplishments. That two faced,Russel Pearce loving, sorry excuse for a leader does not do a thing unless she will in some way benifit from it. I have no hidden agenda,I just can't stand any of these self serving politicians,be they R's or D's ,who have nothing but their own self interest at heart. If you believe that she really has  yours or anyone elses best interest at heart, the you AZGregory are the ignorant one.

No no no!  While I was hoping to get him off the board, another office is not for him. There are better people to represent Arizona than this guy.  IMO

All of the supervisors should be dusting off their resumes and looking for new jobs, real jobs, or retirement.
