Murder in Eloy leads to lawsuit

Bronson Nunuha, who was 26, died in February 2010 after being beaten stabbed more than 100 times by two gang members in his cell at the private facility.

According to the Nunuha family attorneys, a CCA staffer opened the cell door and left the area, soon after which the killers entered and did their evil thing, carving the name of their gang into his chest.

The pair later showered and changed clothes before CCA staff even knew that Nunuha had been slaughtered.

Nunuha was serving a 5-year sentence for burglary and property damage committed in Hawaii, and was transferred to CCA's Saguaro Correctional Center in Eloy (where, go figure, hundreds of Hawaiian prisoners are housed).

The lawsuit says that the murdered man was just months from being released when the other inmates killed him.

The lawsuit, available in its entirety here, describes how one of the killers, gang member Miti Maugaotega Jr., already was serving multiple life sentences for attempted, murder, rape, and armed robbery--and previously had attacked other prisoners at another CCA facility.

"CCA and the State (of Hawaii) knew that Maugaotega was dangerous and capable of extreme violence," says a press release issued by the San Francisco law firm that is representing the Nunuha family, "but still housed him the same unit as Bronson, a non-offender close to finishing a five-year sentence."

Nunuha was murdered in the so-called "Special Housing Incentive Program," or SHIP, a program that places rival gang members and prisoners who do not belong to any gang in the same unit. That practice has led to numerous violent incidents around the nation involving Hawaiian inmates, the lawsuit claims.

Another Hawaii prisoner, Clifford Medina, was murdered at the Eloy prison in June 2010.

Arizona has turned into a private prison state. The Private prison lobby have influenced the law makers in Arizona to pass laws like SB-1070 to keep the private prisons packed 4 per cell. It makes me sick. What worse is the jobs that are stolen from the private sector and given to inmates. Swift trucks, Continental tire , Eaton transmission all are serviced by inmates. Jobs that use to pay the public well. Its alright though because the people who lost those jobs can go to work at the prison for $9 an hour.

This is the new "Norm".  Three generations of Americans have been raised on a steady diet of Violence, smut and greed based entertainment.  What do you expect?  "Garbage in, Garbage out."  Students are assaulting teachers at alarming rates.  When you are taken into custody your life and safety are not guarenteed.  If anyone thinks that your safety and welfare are a serious consideration to the prison industrial complex then you are mistaken.

I wonder how much money taxpayers will pay to resolve this lawsuit?

How many people out there in lala land know that there are patents on our blood and DNA?  There have been cases where treatments and cures are held at bay because of that, in federal court no less.  The intent of the leadership in this state is no less than criminal.  The state is run by criminals and it caters only to likeminded criminals, they will spare no rod while beating their children, the voters.  And the correlation between the first statement concerning blood and DNA patents and the leadership of this state?  NOW we are being treated like subjects, owned objects or to be blunt..slaves...rather than citizens and voters.

Jan Brewer should be named in the lawsuit as well, she has given more money to the private prison industry then any other governor in the history of the state of Arizona. It seems as though it does not matter to her how many people are opposed to what she is doing. Public outrage over skeletor's support of this bullshit has lead to one thing and one thing only, she now does it behind closed doors away from the public eye

there is something wrong with a society that  profits off of crime.

the private prison industry is happy biased on the number of folks they incarcerate.

This type of law suits will eventually be the doom of the private prison industry, they only see prisoners as a commodity and profit, their politician lap dogs who take their campaign finance donations ought to be included in as participants in these lasw suits as aiding and abetting after the fact!
