Kyrsten Sinema Surprises Precisely No One With Announcement That She's Running For Congress

Kyrsten Sinema's running for Congress in Arizona's new Congressional district. Expect a Democratic primary, folks.
In a move that doesn't come as much of a shock to anyone familiar with state politics in Arizona, Democratic state Senator Kyrsten Sinema announced today that she's resigning from her Senate seat and running for Congress -- potentially against Congressman Ben Quayle (although, that's unlikely. More on that below) -- in Arizona's newly drafted Ninth Congressional District.

There's been buzz for months that Sinema, a seasoned veteran in the Arizona Legislature, would seek higher office.

"I've decided to run for Congress because we need to wake up Washington!" Sinema posted on her Facebook page about an hour ago. "I will fight for the forgotten middle class and stand up to a system that is rigged against them."

For now, Sinema is the only Democratic candidate who's officially declared her candidacy -- Senator David Schapira formed an exploratory committee for a potential run for the seat in November, but is yet to make anything official.

Schapira's also expected to be sworn into the Senate when the Legislature goes back into session -- according to the rumor-mill, he doesn't plan to leave his Senate seat if he does decide to run for Congress.

Also rumored to be considering a run for the seat is Arizona Democratic Party Chairman Andrei Cherny.

Quayle, a Republican, currently lives in what is now District 9. However, multiple sources tell New Times he's likely to run in District 6 (which is much more GOP-friendly than District 9) and face Congressman David Schweikert in a primary.

Members of Congress aren't required to live in the district they represent. Sinema, for example, doesn't actually live within the boundaries of District 9.

Whoever wins a Republican primary in GOP-leaning District 6 is likely to easily win the general election -- and elections to come -- so it's a much more attractive seat for Republican candidates than District 6, which is fairly evenly split between Republicans and Democrats.

What were her accomplishments in the AZ legislature? Zero.

I knew Kyrsten back when she was a Green. She has become a shameless opportunist who has sold out most of what she once held dear. Her planting her smackers on Russell Pearce's ass and sucking up to the nativists proved that.

I hope she gets her ass kicked clean out of politics. Not because I dislike her, but because it is likely the only way she will wake up and remember who she really is.

Her support for Russ Pearce will cause her some problems in Mesa and probably in other portions of D9 too, but wonder what her openly bi-sexual orientation will do for her in Mormon country - Mesa?  A lot of people won't care a whit about her sexual orientation, but since she's never run for office in newly scored D9, no one knows how many in that district will care.

Forget these crazy Democrats and Republicans, I'm voting for the Chupacabra.

I can't believe the Republicans are just letting the Democrats run away with this new district, especially with Shapira and Sinema as Democrat candidates.

I wonder if Sen. Sinema still 'loves' the disgraced former senate president, Mister Pearce, now that he's no longer in office and a threat to her?

She lost my vote the day she announced her 'love' for him after he had back-doored her and then he used her as an excuse for having Sal Reza arrested for trespassing in a public building.

Although I do remember Sinema's statement that she "loves Russell  Pearce" (oh my god), I don't recall that she openly "endorsed him" as Truth to Power says.  I vaguely recall that at some time during Pearce's recall  campaign, HE somehow dropped her name as favoring him or supporting him....but I figured that was just him, taking that ball and running with it.  He had probably hundreds or a thousand names -- including deceased people and Jerry Lewis supporters, even one of Lewis' campaign managers -- on his website as "supporters" which I scoured thoroughly at the time, and her name (not among them) would have jumped out at me.

Tommy, fill me in on how he "back-doored" her and used her as an excuse for having Sal Reza arrested.  That's something I obviously missed.   Also, if you or anyone can remember her interview with Keith Olberman (sp?), which I think was about the Pearce recall (not sure) where she screwed up on some fact, would appreciate a memory refresher.

Yes, I want to see proof about her getting it through the back door too. In video format, if possible.

maybe I'm looking at the map wrong, but she was my state senator before the redistricting and now she appears to be running for congress in my district.  But like I said, maybe I'm just reading the map wrong but I don't see what's the issue if she's still representing some of the same area.  It's not like the new district is in tuscon

In a Democratic primary, Sinema is not the strongest candidate. Especially when you consider the fact she openly supported Russell Pearce in the recall election and refused to sign a letter calling on Democratic voters to oust Pearce. She talks about working with people on both sides of the aisle, but when she willfully admits she "loves Russell Pearce." That's not going to play very well in the Latino portions of CD9 or in the parts of Mesa that just recalled him.

While you don't "have" to live in the Congressional district you represent, I, as someone who does live in CD9, won't support or vote for anyone who doesn't live here. This just shows that Sinema "doesn't get it" that people should represent their neighbors, not someplace where she thinks she can win.  Add this on to her "I love Russell" Pearce support and she's not a voice I want representing me.

Yep, she spouts the same bullshit like all the rest of the newbies.   She's gonna remind Washington that they work for the people and bring back the morals to shake up those mfer's.   Then she'll take her extra check every month for voting the way the people who have pictures of her naked, snortin' coke in the weekly Capitol orgy want her to vote.  She'll make a difference alright.

I would be way more likely to vote for her if I got to see pictures of her naked....

I got a lot of respect for Krysten Sinema.  Precisely because she's the only Democrat with a backbone. And what's even better, she is for the securing of our southern border, which has a lot of "Pro-Open Borders" nitwits angry with her stance. Sure, she's for "Immigration Reform"(a mantra the open borders cry about). But more importantly, she's for the security of this country---that means securing the border and beefing up security provisions along the AZ/Mexico line.
