"Raven," Profiled In Our Series on Mentally Ill Homeless, Gets Chased Out

Categories: Creepsters, Whoops

Late last year, we published a story about a guy known as "Raven," a mentally ill man who had been living for more than a year in a central Phoenix park.

mob mentality.png
The piece described how several of Raven's "neighbors," folks who live in the area around the big park, had gotten to know the usually friendly middle-aged man and helped him out with food, water and companionship.

Sadly, not a happy ending to this story. (Photographic hint to the left, i.e. an angry mob).

Several of Raven's neighbors E-mailed us an anonymous flyer they say was stuck on the front doors of their homes a few days ago.

The "headline" on the flyer said, "ATTENTION RANCHO VENTURA AND BAR C RANCH RESIDENTS."

It began, "Many residents have become very concerned about the behavior of the homeless man who has occupied the SE corner of our neighborhood park, Pierce Park, for the past four years."

The anonymous writer (gutless is a synonym for anonymous in this instance) wrote that Raven (outing him by his real name) "recently" had been discovered drunk in the park with his pants down "one-half block from Griffith Elementary School."

A "compassionate" park ranger is said to have offered to divert Raven into a drug-and-alcohol treatment center instead of the criminal-justice system, but the New York native apparently refused.

"Because LOCAL RESIDENTS FEED HIM, GIVE HIM MONEY AND ARE `ENABLING' him (in the words of police), Raven returned to the park and was again arrested and charged with disorderly conduct for yelling obscenities at parents and children while intoxicated.

"Police confirmed he was so drunk, he was deemed unfit to house in the general inmate population and he returned to Pierce Park. Again, it was residents who provided him with the money he used to buy the alcohol.

The screed (we haven't confirmed any of the allegations yet) continues, issuing a serious warning any neighbor who continues to "enable" this man "who defacates on our properties, threatens our children, and made us fearful in our homes... "We are informed that civil litigation against persons enabling him may be an option."

Yup, a lawsuit.

Next comes a creepy Big Brother touch, claiming that "residents" around the park have set up video cameras, and will be taking down the license plates of anyone who makes contact in the public park with Raven.

"Romanticizing his condition with write-ups in the paper does nothing to address the harm he has done to himself and others," the flyer concludes, after noting (correctly) that Raven needs mental-health help and involuntary commitment for treatment. (Folks, do your homework on Arizona's mental-health system if you actually believe in the magic-wand theory.)

Like we said, not everyone in the neighborhood is on the same page as the anonymous bomb-thrower(s). We have received seven E-mails and/or calls from the "residents," all of them pissed at the way this is being handled.

"Thank you for your article regarding Raven," one man (who signed his name) wrote. "Unfortunately, some of the lesser humane people in our neighborhood have taken exception to Raven and placed at everyone's door a letter regarding Raven. I am in disagreement with the contents of the letter and despise the anonymous nature in which it was handled.

"I will continue to 'enable' Raven, although sadly, his can and belongings have been absent the last few days and I have not seen Raven since this weekend. I do hope all is well and I wanted to bring to your attention the neighborhood Raven `warning we all received."

We will report back on this one.

And this word to whoever wrote and distributed the flyer: Give us a call at 602-229-8433 if you have the cojones.

Ask for Paul.

I read the original story, It was not a romantic story at all and did not paint that pretty of a picture. what has happened to Raven out there is sad, and what happens to the Ravens of the world is even sadder

Goes to show you there's no real sense of community in Phoenix. And certainly no brotherly love. Man's inhumanity to man in AZ is appalling.

I live in an older area in North Phoenix and can't believe the vandals who target foreclosed homes. Or rather, the apathy around those who fail to act on it.

Having been homeless, I can understand why the people of Phoenix may have been nervosu having Raven around them in Pierce Park.

That said, it appears that Raven is not posing a danger either to himself or to others, he is not a criminal and he is not a registered sex offender.

He is just another victim of the Great Recession, GED Jan and the AZ Legislature's (ahem) brilliant idea to slash funding to the mentally ill.

Whatever happened to "love thy neighbor?"

more reasons why you should never talk to the media. fame is a motherfucker. no one knows you when your down and out. lyrics from an old blues song. more proof that humans really hate one another and no one really gives a fucking shit about anyone but themselves. you learn this hard lesson in life 2 different ways, by either going to prison for long hard time and being forgot about by society and your so called friends and when you become homeless. this is when you see how it really is. no one cares about you.

Anonymity is practiced in state government all the time.  Employees are terrorized by supervisors in gangbang good cop bad cop sessions of multiple supers to one employee having to answer to accusations levied against them by ANONYMOUS co-workers or "customers."  False allegations from ANONYMOUS people cost employees their jobs routinely at the state.  This practice will only get better with Gov Brewer's pay raise bargain - now employees can be terrorized and dismissed from their jobs without even any ANONYMOUS charges from ANONYMOUS people.  Maybe this will cutback on lying and the sniveling souls that attempt to curry favor with them so maybe it will be cost effective in its decisive speed, for the state, not for the people with no sustenance who find they have to be homeless for a period of time to qualify for aid, and then they cannot get the aid because they have no address.   Of course most people think that if the employee minds their P's & Q's they will have no problem.  If only you knew that minding your P's & Q's in state service could also put you in jail.

Therefore I must conclude, the originator of the ANONYMOUS charges against "Raven" must be a state employee, perhaps a supervisor. If it is OK for local government to function this way, and it is OK for all the turd whirld governments that we "liberate" to function in this manner, (and then they continue to function in this manner) why exactly again is "Raven's" foe so cowardly? Isn't this individual just following SOP around the globe?

That's awful. Homeless, crazy drunks should be allowed to do whatever they want.

The coward who wrote this anonymous notice needs to understand that according to AZ law, a person can only be treated against their will if they are a danger to themselves or others.  Public intoxication or homelessness does not count.  If "Raven" were too intoxicated to be jailed, the police would not have returned him to the park.  They would have taken him in for medical detox and afterwards they would have taken him to jail, if they had reason to believe that he had committed a crime.  Mr. Anonymous is more likely to be subject to legal action himself for harrassment.

Don't think Jesus will be visiting this neighborhood any day soon. Neighborhood watch might stone him.

PROSECUTE AND IMPRISON THEM... for oodles of years
That is the only way to put an end to this mindlessly asinine attitude some people have about showing kindness & compassion for the superfluous part of society that Governor Jan doesn't give a shit about.
