Arizona State University scientist Paul Davies and research technician Robert Wagner propose a sort of "why not" project in search of proof for extraterrestrial civilizations:

In Acta Astronautica, an online scientific journal, they suggest inspecting new, close-up photos of Earth's moon for signs of a visit by aliens, because artifacts on the airless surface would be preserved for hundreds of millions of years. Their article was published in October, but has gained the attention of online news sites since being noticed over the weekend by the U.K.'s Guardian.

"In this paper we take as a case study one particular new and rapidly-expanding database: the photographic mapping of the Moon's surface by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) to 0.5 m resolution," they write. "Although there is only a tiny probability that alien technology would have left traces on the moon in the form of an artifact or surface modification of lunar features, this location has the virtue of being close, and of preserving traces for an immense duration."

Will high-resolution photos of the moon reveal evidence of alien space travelers?

Davies runs ASU's BEYOND Center for Fundamental Concepts in Science.

The pair would like to see hundreds of thousands of photos scoured for anything that looks -- well, man-made obviously isn't the right phrase.

NASA won't need to rob money from its next-generation spaceship to look for little green men. Davies and Wagner say the photos could be scrutinized with computer software or by legions of computer users.

I have an open mind, but I do not believe most of the loons who claim they've seen UFOS or aliens. And abduction stories are all so similar that they are all un-original!

I take the Penn&Teller View.. It's BS!

there might be life out there (in fact I am sure there is) but what makes us think that any of the other life is smart enough to do the impossible?

Why would anyone want to hide such evidence?  If a structure built by extra-terrristrials were found, there would be an enormous push to go investigate in person.  It would be a huge boon for NASA and other space agencies across the world.

Really, we'd have to.  What if "they" were dangerous in some way?  An abandoned structure would reveal something about the technologies of a species capable of traveling interstellar distances. Something we have a hard time even imagining.

Do we want the Chinese to get this technological information and keep it to themselves? Something that could move them ahead ten thousand years? The Chinese, Europeans, Russians and Japan would feel the same way about us.

The President would be on national television in about 3 minutes announcing, "We have to do something about this," and would Congress really want to be blamed for letting the Chinese have what could be the greatest prize ever?

We'd be on our way to the Moon in three or four years; to Mars in ten.

NASA people probably think, "If only."

There's already plenty of evidence from photos of the moon.   You have to look for credible sites that do research on this and on Mars.  There are hundreds of anomalies to view and many photos that contain obscuration by NASA and JPL.  Most people here will just hoot and holler about it though.  Plenty of ignorant people around.   Of course they know it all though.

Quick, notify the Piehole Posse. Joe will, of course, want to send somebody to make sure that no illegal aliens have landed there.

A good question. Two hundred years ago what we now know about the universe was considered to be fantasy or heresy. Travel in powered aircraft was considered to be impossible, because no one could foresee the development of the technologies necessary for powered flight. Medical science was in its (comparable) infancy. Who could have foreseen the incredible advances in information processing and communication? What we currently believe is impossible is framed by what we know at the time.

Einstein's theories are now being seriously challenged. Scientists are starting to believe that particles can travel faster than the speed of light.

Humankind has only just entered a period in which it can seriously study the universe around it. But our ability to learn and to manipulate our environment through technology comes with inherent dangers - we now have the capacity to destroy our civilization with thermonuclear weapons. The possibility that, sometime in the near future, nations or groups on a mission from god will initiate mankind's SECOND nuclear war (WWII was our first, after all) is well within the realm of possibility.

If humankind can avoid such rash behavior and learn to control its excesses, we may well make discoveries that would boggle our minds, as our discoveries of the early 21st century would surely boggle the minds of a person from the early 16th century if that person could be magically transported to our time.

Just a few years ago the dominant thought in science was that solar systems were probably relatively rare, that planets the size of earth were certainly quite rare and that such planets located within the comfort zone from its sun in which life could develop would be even more rare. Now, with our still-primitive technology, we know that solar systems are common. We are starting to be able to detect planetary bodies the size of earth and have even found such within the comfort zone of a sun. As our ability to detect orbital bodies around far off suns improves, even more exciting discoveries are likely.

Consider that a species of sentient beings manages to avoid destroying itself with its technology (perhaps after several unsuccessful tries) and manages to survive hundreds- and perhaps - thousands of years - with an ever-increasing knowledge of physics. It's quite possible that such a species will have made discoveries that will allow manipulation of time and space.

Perhaps. It reamins conjecture unless and until we come in contact with such a species.

But something inexplicable by conventional explanation appears to be taking place in our airspace, particularly in the vicinity of nuclear weapons bases, storage facilities and testing sites. Certainly all the military pilots, flight crew, air police, ground crew and tower operators who have reported that they observed flying objects performing maneuvers that can't be replicated by aircraft produced with current human technology are not lying or hallucinating. Reports that such objects seem to have the capacity to interfere with the operation of those weapons systems and have the capacity to approach and move about such restricted areas with impunity are certainly of interest to our defense establishment and political leadership.

There are even more eyewitness accounts by civilian aircrew, FAA air traffic controllers and ground crew. Can all of those eyewitnesses, who one can assume are familiar with human-made aviation technology due to their work, all be mistaken in their observations?

When people such as astronaut Gordon Cooper and cosmonaut Pavel Popovich say they have seen flying objects they believe were of extraterrestrial design (not while flying their orbital missions), their observations should be taken seriously. Both were expert military pilots with thousands of flying hours, who had been subjected to rigorous physical and psychological training to prepare them for space flight. Cooper still holds the U.S. record for solo space flight (22 orbits in a one-man Mercury capsule in 1963.)

False.

They would not publicize it.  Such a discovery would produce worldwide mass hysteria if made public.  It would also lead to the inevitable demise of organized religion.  Too many special interests would be at risk.

If such a discovery were made the public wouldn't be made aware for at least a decade after the fact.  The only thing that would change that timeline would be if an ET race showed up on our doorstep.

All of the NASA photos are public except for those that haven't been processed yet.

A large professional Earth based telescope would have the ability to resolve structures as small as the length of a city block.

The formula is

resolution in arc seconds = 11.6 divided by telescope aperture in centimeters.

A telescope with a ten meter aperture, property situated (like on top of 2,500 plus meter tall mountain with dry, stable air a good part of the time) with adaptive optics has the ability to resolve to about 0.012 arc seconds.  There are many such telescopes positioned in Spain, the United States, and Chile, and operated by many dozens of countries.

Using basic trigonometry, it is easy to calculate the arc seconds subtended by, say, a 200 meter wide object as seen from the surface of the Earth to the surface of the Moon.  Perigee is about 362,000 kilometers, subtracting the radius of the Earth and the Moon leaves about 354,000 kilometers.

The angle from the Earth of a right triangle with the adjacent side having a length of 354,000 kilometers and the opposite side having a length of 200 meters is

.2 divided by 354,000 = .000565.  The angle that produces this tangent (you have to look this up) is 0.0000324 degree or (since there are 3600 arc seconds in a degree) 0.116 arc seconds.

Thus there are several ground based telescopes that could identify structures on the part of the  Moon facing the Earth that are about the length of a city block.  The effect of shadows will be to enhance this ability somewhat.

This, of course, does not compare with the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, which can resolve objects as small as 50 centimeters in length and which also images the part of the Moon that never shows its face to Earth.  About 42% of the total lunar surface is never seen from Earth.

There have been other spacecraft that have imaged the entire Moon.  The Japanese Kaguya spacecraft, for instance, spent two years orbiting the Moon, taking images and returning them to Japan.  The European Union’s Smart-1 spacecraft was launched in 2003 and is still imaging the Moon.  The Russians carried out many lunar imaging missions starting as early as 1959, with two successful missions in 1966, and others in 1968, 1969, 1970 and 1974.  The Chinese Chang’e 1 spacecraft orbited the Moon for two years from November, 2007 to March, 2009, Chang'e 2 was launched in 2010 and is still producing images.

All of the data, including the Russian and Chinese, have been made public.

As Ambrose Bierce put it, “Three men can keep a secret, if two are dead.”  In this case tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of people have spent years pouring over these images of the Moon in excruciating detail.  They’re actually looking for information about geological issues, like the Moon’s origin, but any alien structures would undoubtedly show up.

How can you think, that if there were an alien structure on the surface of the Moon, we would not investigate?  Technology 10,000 ahead of us, and we’re just waiting for the Chinese, or even some determined Russians or Germans, to get there first?

As for the worldwide mass hysteria, I don’t think so.  We have widespread predictions of the end of the world every few months, and people seem to take it in stride.  And every few months, from the NEO Warning Center, we hear of another comet or asteroid aimed at Earth with planetary destruction possible.  Nobody much blinks, and this is certainly a much more substantial danger than some abandoned structure on the Moon.

The fact that so many people have been looking so hard for so long, and have found no such thing, suggests to me that there isn’t any such thing.

Valid points. There is, however, ample visual evidence and eyewitness testimony by very credible observers to indicate that we are being visited and studied. Military personnel have reported UFO intrusions over U.S. nuclear weapons facilities, test sites, storage areas and bases since 1947. Hundreds of retired military personnel have gone on record as having seen UFOs. Read Robert Hastings' "UFOs and Nukes." For an intro, Google Robert Hastings and the National Press Club for the video produced last year of retired military eyewitnesses testifying to their experiences with UFOs. The people Hastings assembled for his press conference are not mentally ill or deranged. They all held very sensitive positions of trust that required some of the highest security clearances that are possible to attain.

Military pilots and other aircrew, air traffic controllers, security police (airman who guarded missile sites and bases during the cold war and after), astronauts, commercial pilots, a U.S. president, a governor of this state, police officers and others have all gone on record regarding what they observed - flying objects that performed in ways that exceed current human technology.

Credible witnesses include military pilots who attempted to engage and destroy objects that evaded their aircraft and even appeared to have temporarily disabled on-board weapons systems.

Credible witnesses also include Minuteman missile launch commanders who watched as entire flights (10) of missiles went from "ready" to "down" status after a UFO was observed above their underground facility in 1967.

Other credible witnesses include a deputy base commander and several USAF security policeman who observed UFOs intruding into the airspace above and landing on the largest NATO tactical air base in Europe - where tactical nukes were stored in underground bunkers.

As a retired most-senior officer in the UK defense establishment pointed out, either these intrusions actually occurred - which ought to be of keen interest to those in high places of government - or they did not occur, and NATOs most sensitive defense establishments are being operated and guarded by liars and lunatics.

It is also interesting to note that none of the witnesses who testified during last year's press conference about their encounters with UFOs lost their security clearances, were relieved of duty or reassigned as a consequence of making their reports.
