Joe Arpaio's Rough Week: Is the Sheriff Finally Unelectable?

Four more years (of civil rights violations, lawsuits, political witch hunts, and smugness)?
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's had a pretty rough week -- aside from the Department of Justice determining that he's guilty of the worst racial-profiling practices in U.S. history, the sheriff is still dealing with the fallout from the Associated Press' decision to pull the old El Mirage botched sex-crime story seemingly out of nowhere (the East Valley Tribune won a Pullitzer Prize in 2009 for first reporting the exact same story).

Then there's the apparent ineptitude of the attorney representing the sheriff in the New Times vs. Arpaio lawsuit. Read about that fiasco here.

So, just so we're not leaving anything out, this week alone, Maricopa County's voting public has been exposed to media reports about Arpaio racially profiling people, bungling hundreds of sex-crime investigation, and violating the First Amendment rights of the owners of a newspaper.

Yet, Arpaio vows that his resignation is "never gonna happen," and claims he plans to run for re-election next year -- when he'll be 80 years old.

You might be thinking to yourself "only a county full of racist, sex-offenders who oppose free speech would elect this guy to anything...ever."

Well welcome to Maricopa County, where voters have elected Arpaio sheriff five times -- despite tales of his misdeeds dominating headlines for several years (New Times headlines, anyway).

Is Arpaio's current wave of bad press enough to finally convince voters that he's more trouble than he's worth? Will civil rights violations, millions and millions (and millions) of dollars in lawsuits, and political witch hunts end the career of America's self-proclaimed "toughest sheriff?"

Or will Arpaio's blue-haired, Mexican-fearing supporters elect him to another four-year term -- again, when the sheriff will be 80 years old?

We want to know what you think, though: is Arpaio finally unelectable?

Cast your vote below.

Now would be a good time to remind the people of AZ what Sheriff Joe's guidance has cost the state taxpayers.

I don't know who to give credit to for gathering this info, sorry......"Joe Arpaio is a lawsuit magnet who costs Maricopa County millions. Nine million was awarded to the mother of Charles Agster a mentally handicapped man forced into a restraint chair by sheriff deputies. Eight and a quarter million was awarded to the family of Scott Norberg who died after being forced into a restraint chair by sheriff deputies. Two million was awarded to the family of Brian Crenshaw who was legally blind and mentally disabled who died after being beaten by sheriff deputies. Eight hundred thousand was awarded to Richard Post a paraplegic who became quadriplegic when sheriff deputies broke his neck while placing him in a restraint chair. An undisclosed amount over 1 million was awarded to the family of Clint Yarbourgh who suffocated while in a restraint chair.Joe Arpaio does undocumented immigrant sweeps because when his department tried to do a prostitution sweep in November 2003 sixty cases of the seventy arrested were thrown out because the sheriff deputies engaged in sex-acts with the prostitutes before arresting them. I bet his deputies are thankful that Joe hasn’t sent them out on any male prostitution sweeps.Joe Arpaio has arrested a county supervisor and then rearrested him again when the charges were dropped. When Joe Arpaio didn’t like articles about him published in the Phoenix New Times he had the publishers arrested and he has threatened to arrest reporters for the newspaper too."

Is it ironic/funny or intentional that on the AZRepublic web site, the link that is labeled "A Timeline of Arpaio's Career" actually directs you to a news article about yesterday's plan crash? (as of noon today)

now that right there is funny. the AZ republic is pretty bad, but maybe they did that on purpose!

Sherrif Joe is one of a few law enforcement individuals who understands a simple fact: "illegal immigrant" = an individual who is not in the United States legally. Being that the "illegal immigrant" has broken our  (and Barrack Hussien Obwama's) Federal Immigration Laws and entered the United States through illegal means, he / she is subject to a crime and as such, he / she is subject to deportation. Is that difficult to understand?  Joe is a true American Patriot.

Looks like he still has some people fooled.  All the Sheriff did was make a big ruckus and then quietly drive them over to ICE to be processed.  That is after he called all the news channels and got his mug on TV bragging about what a great Sheriff he is and how he is a one man army fighting the illegals in the country.  Don't be fooled by this guy.  The only American he truly cares about is Joe Arpaio.A real Sheriff would be much more concerned about enforcing all of the laws fairly and justly and not just making a show for the haters that support him.

" ... he / she is subject to a crime ......."   Are you in any way shape or form familiar with Federal Immigration Law?!  FYI :  A person, any person, who just enters the country illegally / overstays a visa / tourist not leaving the country within 90 days etc. is just guilty of a civil violation, not a crime!  That's why these people have to be turned over to ICE  asap. With SB 1070 the crooks tried to change that, so that these people could be housed in the private prisons of the Chuck Coughlin folks. Didn't happen, did it? So please, get your facts straight before you spew your BS.

This is the filth in the Obama adminstration's reaction to SCOTUS undertaking judgement on Arizona SB1070. They know they are going to lose, possibly as early as June, and are making a pure desperation move to demonstrate to the Supreme court that immigration enforcement is racist, cruel, and unconstitutional. We will have to wait another entire year to flush this pile of waste down the toilet and out of office.

Lol @zooed:disqus  ...posting your inane rantings on Sonoran Alliance alone isn't enough?

First, you didn't blame Randy Parraz for any of this. You're slipping, bro!

You really think this is going to "help" SB1070 with SCOTUS?And when Joe refuses to meet the requirements and this goes to Court - and you know it will because you clowns would never let him live it down if he did - and the Court rules in favor of the Feds and then mandates reform within MCSO....

That's going to help the pro 1070 crowd?

Well, gee... let me think...if this is how Maricopa County has been dealing with immigrants without 1070 in place...well, sure let's validate it and let them run hog wild.

Because, you know, the Supes are always cool with a person or organization that blatantly violates the Constitution.

Look for a very fast ruling on 1070, zoo....and have your Kleenex ready.

Oh, by the way...love the non "reporting" of this on SA...Is the best Shane could do is come up with a lame story about...Shapira...of all people?

"...You really think this is going to "help" SB1070 with SCOTUS?..." -?

You better go back and read it again.  As for the SCOTUS ruling, you should have your "napkin" handy as well; you know how nasty those stains can be.

we all know how SB1070 will turn out and when it is over we will know that SB1070 was a waste of time and money.

you need to get some facts, rather than just listening to joes press conferences, before you make comments like that..im sorry to tell you, you sound like a complete moron. How can you ignore statistics that clearly show profiling? Then the numerous amounts of legal, AMERICAN citizens who have been handcuffed and treated as illegals, because of the color of their skin! The sad thing is Joe isnt a racist, but dipshits like you are and thats why he continues to allow it..he wants you idiots to think hes doing something right, when instead he is violating the very oath he took as sheriff.  That is, "I will defend and uphold the Constitution of the United States..." Instead its "I will do whatever i have to do, Constitution be damned, to get re-elected". The abuse of power, the deaths in the jails, the racketeering that is occurring within the jail system (canteen, pink underwear sales, etc..where do you think that money goes? Certainly not back into the system!), the lack of investigations into serious crimes so that they can target opponents instead, the lack of oversight (no audit since 96?!?!), the list is endless..and just one would surely get anyone else removed.

Well there are two new youngest seniors in Sun City who think Joe needs to go! And many older Sun City seniors who pass away on a daily basis, his days are numbered. I can't stand the A hole and will work to see he's not voted in again.

Just wrote this to my (R) Congressman, Mike Fitzpatrick, to suggest that Janet Napolitano, who may need help finding her way out of her office, worry about the cheesecloth border with Mexico, as a opposed to playing politics with her Trotskite buddies in Washington DC.with a great guy like Joe Arpaio. One more reason "Barry Obama" should go back to "Community Organizing" as a career. With that income, maybe he and the bride can spend 3 weeks on Martha's Vineyard or take shopping trips to Paris. The sooner we clean the manure from the White House and the Halls of Congress on the next election, the better off the country will be!

Mike:On your "to-do" list: Joe Arpaio, the AZ Sheriff that has done such a great job, is being skewered by "Clueless Janet" over at Homeland Security. You and "Your boys" in Congress need to let "Clueless Janet" know that there are more important things with which she should spend her time as opposed to skewering Joe Arpaio who is doing the right things when it comes to enforcement of our immigration laws and prison administration. Please relate to "Clueless" that she should keep her "punitive politics" to herself and her Socialist buddies, and worry about the "cheesecloth border' with Mexico. Don't worry about the public officials that are doing things correctly like Joe Arpaio, worry about supporting giuys like Joe Arpaio and give his "game plan" to others in his position, that they might emulate his initiatives.Jim Gaston
