Dogpile on Sheriff Arpaio Grows Over Bungled Sex-Crime Cases

ny times logo.JPG

The New York Times piled more criticism of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio this afternoon over his office's record of poorly investigated sex crimes.

Reporter Marc Lacey, in what will be one of his swan-song articles from Arizona before leaving to serve as deputy editor of his paper's foreign desk, writes that the office's "lackadaisical approach to more than 400 sex-crimes cases that has Sheriff Arpaio, 79, in trouble."

Lacey also attended Thursday night's rally in Guadalupe, where allegations surfaced that are similar to the ones in El Mirage:

One young woman said her cousin has tried with no success to get deputies to investigate the molestation of her three daughters. "The person who did it is still out there," she said. "We see him all the time."

Such an accusation shouldn't come as a surprise to close observers of Arpaio's leadership.

As the East Valley Tribune explained in its 2008 Pulitzer-prize winning article, El Mirage wasn't the only problem. Guadalupe and Queen Creek, two other towns that contract with the MCSO, had their own complaints.

Yesterday, Arizona's two senators issued a critical, though muted, statement about the scandal.

Calls for Arpaio's resignation (mostly by Democrats) have increased. And yesterday afternoon, Bill Louis, former assistant police chief for El Mirage, wrote a scathing opinion column for the Arizona Republic:

So, just how sincere was Sheriff Joe Arpaio in his apologetic comment about whether there are actual victims in the neglected El Mirage cases? He has known about it for at least three years. The facts of this situation speak for themselves.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio failed these victims. At this point there is little that can be done to undo the harm they have endured.

A sincere apology and acceptance of responsibility from Joe Arpaio to these victims would have been the professional and compassionate thing to do. But, instead we once again witnessed Arpaio's smug and defiant attitude -- this time directed towards the very victims he neglected.

But if you're wondering what kind of long-term damage this renewed criticism will have on Arpaio's 2012 campaign, consider this:

After the Tribune broke the above-linked story in 2008, which included evidence that rapes had gone uninvestigated in El Mirage, the newspaper reportedly lost subscribers.

I would like to say something about Karma, but since I've seen what the Sheriff does to his oponnents and how he abuses his power to investigate those who would dare speak against him or how he berates victims who cry out for justice after their rape cases go univestigated or how he uses his political clout to gain East Valley (modern day Nazis) Tea Party support from white supemists like Russel Pierce and Jan Brewer who have costs Arizona tax payer millions in lawsuits due to attacks on those who do not have a voice

Why can't we start the paperwork for a recall vote to get Arpaio out of office.  That is going to carry more weight than a petition. RECALL SHERIFF ARPAIO!!!!!!

The process of recalling an elected official takes months.  Arpaio is already up for re-election (assuming he runs) next November.  There is no way to get a recall established, collect the needed signatures, and do all of the other legwork necessary before the election anyways.

Now, Brewer and Horne ...  they're in office until 2014.  We DO have time to recall those 2.

what about Kyl, and McLame? we should have started after their latest re-elections.

Well, this sordid matter was written up today in the New York Times.

I don't think this one is going to go away.  Nothing rattles normal people's sensibilities as much as sexual crimes against previously trusting children and minors.   The public furor over the cases in the East have been like a publicity springboard that reminds us of Arizona's instances (the Brophy Prep teacher being fired, a reminder of the sickening Brock case, various people around the country coming out and telling law enforcement of the crimes against them years ago that they endured as children.  Instances of one adult for the most part sexually victimizing a child or children.  Arpaio's non-feasance and malfeasance was far worse. He was, and maybe still is, an enabler for these criminals.   Reported crimes and nothing done, so the perpetrators are free to repeat their crimes, and actually removing and transferring officers OUT  of the SVU to work on his silly or meritless "showbiz" priorities.  Add to that his sadistic lust for hurting people, physically or financially, and his vindictive nature towards those he fears or who might expose his wrongdoings, and we've got one mentally ill individual.....a masterful opportunist and con-artist who talks the talk with adults, just as pedophiles do with children.  If Arpaio ever is indicted (and frankly, I think the man is certifiably crazy) he's likely to be judged not guilty by reason of insanity.

Now is the time for the Dept of Justice to warm up the Grand Jurors and present all the evidence they have and include the maleficence and dereliction of duty as related to the sex crime investigation failure. While the nation is shocked over the cover ups by Penn State and Syracuse, Joseph M Arpaio has joined their ranks, as a failure to protect children.Eric Holder please indict Arpaio NOW! The country will not be sympathetic toward his failure to protect children. Pres Obama should wait no longer to have Arpaio indicted. The country is more concerned for its children than the threat of illegal!INDICT ARPAIO NOW!!

Is the term illegal, is illegal in reference to everyone that violates the law, or is there some type of amnesty for the chosen few. It appears that the blindfold on lady justice has temporarily been removed for the sake of Arpaio, by his nation wide group of supporters, and the scales which were formally used for judgement, are found to be inadequate for use in the balance of justice any longer.

The only dogpile I see is a bunch of huge neo-Nazi criminals crushing the MCSO shurf in the federal pen...

Then again, the Senile Spinmaster may be put in isolation or segregation for his own protection...

Joe will never resign. His narcissistic personality won't let him plus he's got to be terrified about losing control of the MCSO's records which will, no doubt reveal further corruption. Now that many of the records are digitized, he could shred until next Nov., and not get rid of them all and you can bet that scares the Arpaio out of him.

Always amusing to watch Joe tell everyone how he's the big bad boss man and runs the show until he is caught with his pants down and then he never has any idea how they got down around his ankles. What a pathetic little punk.

I think it will be cool to read about Arpaio being forced out of MCSO by a sex scandal.

They already are. It was last week when they were all over him like flies on a "dogpile". Heck, even SPLC reported on it. Where have you been? In the hole?!

Awww, have you missed me?  I'm not sure what story you are talking about from last week but I'm sure I'm caught up on my reading.  It just might be my blogging I've been lagging on.

You go and have yourself a great weekend now.
