Cops: New Year's Eve's Not An Excuse to Randomly Fire Bullets at the Sky

Shannon Smith was killed on New Year's Eve in 1999 by a stray bullet someone randomly fired into the air.
Saturday is New Year's Eve, and for a lot of Valley residents, that's apparently an invitation to randomly fire bullets into the sky.

If you didn't already know, the Phoenix Police Department wants to remind city residents that not only is blasting away at the sky an incredibly stupid thing to do (bullets, believe or not, are subject to the same rules of gravity as everything else), it's also a felony.

New Year's Eve marks the 12th anniversary of the death of Shannon Smith, a 14-year-old honor student killed in 1999 by a stray bullet fired randomly into the air while she was standing in her backyard talking on the phone.

Shocked that randomly firing a gun in an urban environment was only a misdemeanor, Smith's parents campaigned to pass "Shannon's Law" in 2000, which makes doing so a felony.

Since then, the Phoenix Police Department says, random gunfire on New Year's Eve has been reduced by more than 80 percent in the city of Phoenix.

This morning, officers from the Estrella Mountain Precinct, and representatives from the City of Phoenix Prosecutor's Office and Neighborhood Services Department, started passing out flyers to remind residents how dumb it is to fire bullets into the air, and the possible consequences of doing so.

There are plenty of ways to ring in the new year -- randomly firing bullets into the air might be the dumbest, so don't do it.

For a decade leading up to this New Years Eve, The valley police could be seen on all of our local TV channels touting this NEW machine the had that could pinpoint gunfire to within 3 feet.  Have you ever heard of anyone being arressted as the result of this 'myth machine'?

Imagine it is August 9th, for a minute, now their is nothing special about that day , so gun fire in the valley could be expected to be only a mere fraction of the gunfire expected on New Years Eve right?  Ever hear of the machine catching any random shooting on August 9th???  HELL NO

The whole thing is a SCAM by our, "oh, please trust us, we wouldn't lie", authorities!

Same Crap just a different day!

This is why we have fireworks! Oh, I guess fireworks (the good noisy ones) are illegal in Arizona. They must want to encourage random gunfire.

This should be written in Spanish if reaching the target audience is the goal.

Some Redneck asshole in my hood shoots his gun into the air every new years eve pop pop pop pop! and nothing ever happens to him. why is that? I thought the cops knew where the bullets came from or something  like that with the use of some new high tech crapola or something like that. how come the guy near me gets away with it every year? I dont know who he is I just know he is near by.

and I should care why? On new years eve I heard about 10 people in BCC fire off guns.. all illegally I am sure.

or rather, June 14, 1999 (according to the link I posted previously).

they aren't illegal here in BCC if you are licensed to shoot them. Back when I worked for Home Depot one of my best customers did fireworks for a living . I cut the wood they used to make the boxes to fire off their fireworks.

YPS I think you should come with me for a little walk around BCC. I will show you all the trashing of the desert done, not by illegals, but by ignorant white rednecks.IT is a crime  in AZ to damage saguaros, but many stupid white rednecks do not follow that law. I seriously doubt that any illegals come to Agua Fria National Monument.

Come on YPS,you very well know idiots come from all nationalities. I would like to see all the cities in the Phoenix metro area adopt the same detection system that is used in Glendale. Maybe then we could get a handle on all these brainless idiots that find it necessary to prove their machismo by firing rounds indiscriminatly into the air.

How on earth could they detect that?  If they got lucky and found the bullets, and then got luckier and came across the gun, they might be able to match the bullet to the gun.  Chances are, if nobody was hurt, it would never get that far.  It's almost impossible to catch someone doing this, unless there is a witness who calss the police.  Who the hell is going to be a witness aginst a crazy asshole with a gun?  Not me...

This year, why don't you climb up on your roof and look around?

Don't rely on Mr. King to provide reliable information here.  Like most of the lazystream media (see Jon Stewart make fun of these types of "journalists" on his show The Daily Show) in the valley, they wouldn't know a fact if it bit them in the head. He just cut and pasted the press release from the City of Phoenix Police department and then fluffed it up a little with his own inaccuracies.  Don't look for a correction from King, he's proud he's a fuckup.

Easier to get a permit for a machine gun than fireworks in this state! Seriously, for the average Joe, it's impossible to get a permit to shoot real fireworks here. The rationale behind the situation is understandable, but the contrast still brings a chuckle.

considering half the people in AZ shoot "real" fireworks anyways and possess machine guns anyways.

Although tbh I think they shouldn't be allowed to shoot off fireworks anyways.. too many idiots out there on youtube suggest no one should be able to legally shoot fireworks unless licensed.

once again read my post below. You have no case to rest since most of the jackasses that do that are white people.
