Chandler Cop Shoots Suicidal Gunman -- After Gunman Shot Himself in the Head

An officer-involved shooting in Chandler earlier this week has been ruled a suicide -- turns out the victim shot himself in the head before getting shot by police.

According to the Chandler Police Department, about 6:45 p.m. Monday, 39-year-old Adam Buckner pointed a gun at one of his neighbors in the 5000 block of West Jupiter Way.

Police were called, and when they arrived Buckner pointed the gun at them, too.

As Buckner was fleeing the scene, he stopped and turned his gun on a Chandler police officer. The officer drew his weapon as Buckner "moved into a tactical position."

Buckner and the officer were in the middle of a standoff -- it ended when Buckner cycled a round from his .45-caliber semi-automatic pistol and shot himself in the head.

Thinking the round fired by Buckner was at him, the officer fired back, hitting Buckner in the torso.

Buckner's neighbors describe him as erratic -- local TV station spoke with Kellie Olson, who lives down the street from him, and gives the following account.

"All I've been told is that he's threatened a lot of people in here. He's been in trouble, and cops have been called on him several times," Olson tells 3TV.

An autopsy revealed that Buckner was killed by the shot to the head. The wound on his torso was "potentially survivable," the medical examiner determined -- assuming Buckner hadn't also shot himself in the head, that is..

Some people should think about what they comment on - this man was my brother - he was a troubled individual - I hope you never have to go through some things he had to go through or what we as a family had to go through this past week.  Thanks

Tracey,  I am sorry for your loss and am terribly sorry to learn of all this. I was your brother's friend in high school and knew him to be brilliant, creative, strong and capable.  I know he was offered the nuclear program in the Navy at 18 (the military's highest educational program). I admired and respected Adam. Again, I am very sorry for your loss. - Jim

The cop tried to kill him before he killed himself.   Failing that, the cop used him as target practice.

"Thinking the round fired by Buckner was at him, the officer fired back, hitting Buckner in the torso."??????????

Was he afraid that the round would bounce off Buckner's head and hit him?

Seriously, he would have had to see what the muzzle of Buckner's gun was pointed at to "Feel Threatened".

The real truth is that too many cops "Feel Threatened" by anybody who doesn't wear a badge, regardless of that person's intent or actions.

It takes 1/4 of a second to pull a trigger and fire a round. If a gun is pointed in the direction of any police officer...God help them. If someone has a gun to their side and is told by the police to drop it, and they start raising that gun, disobeying commands to do so...God help them. US Police Deaths are up enormous percentages and in the several hundred, while Canada has had 3 this year and other countries 1-2. Should the police be scared in this country...yes.
