Thomas Weaver, Phoenix Teacher, Accused of Feeling Up Students

Scottsdale teacher Thomas Weaver is accused of grabbing the breasts of two 12-year-old students'.
A teacher with the Scottsdale Unified School District was arrested yesterday after two 12-year-old girls accused him of grabbing their breasts.

The two girls, who police say are best friends, say the alleged gropings happened while the two were in the school's library with 60-year-old Thomas Weaver, their teacher at the Arcadia Learning Center.

According to court documents obtained by New Times, on October 31, the girls say Weaver approached them in the library and told one of them he liked her necklace. He then grabbed it -- before copping a quick (five-second) feel.

He then told the other girl he liked her necklace, too. According to the girl, Weaver then grabbed her breast, too -- this boob-grab lasted about 30 seconds.

Both girls say a similar incident happened at the beginning of the school year.

The girls told police that Weaver grabbed a cell phone out of one of the girls' back pocket. She says it seemed at the time like he was feeling her up and that it took him "longer than necessary" to remove the phone.

The girls say they always feel uncomfortable around Weaver because he's "always asking for hugs," and that he looks at them "in a way that a teacher shouldn't look at a student."

As for any evidence other than the girls' word against Weaver's, there doesn't appear to be any -- Phoenix Sergeant Steve Martos didn't immediately respond to an email asking whether these girls had any reason to make up a story about Weaver.

Weaver was booked on two counts of sexual abuse, and one count of aggravated assault on a minor. He's being held on $25,000 bond.

We must give power to what kids say or they will never come forward about anything. Even if this isn't considered sexual abuse by the courts or our opinions, it is highly inappropriate conduct by a teacher. None of us would want our daughters in such a situation that made a girl feel so uncomfortable!! This man shouldn't teach if he makes girls uncomfortable. I am sure the girls haven't enjoyed the whole situation.

I happen to know that a student over heard these two girls saying after they had their cell phones taken away in class for the millionth time that "they were going to make him pay, and pay big". They were also taking about a glee episode that this very thing happened to a teacher and the students got what they wanted, the teacher to be removed so things could be better for them. Also most of the kids dont believe these two girls either and its making them mad, I hope they dont accuse the whole school of the same thing. All we need is a lie detector test and if it shows that they lied then they are the ones that need to be in jail, and shame on their parents for raising children that would do something of this magnitude. Even if Mr. Weaver is cleared he will probably never be able to be a teacher again, I dont know if I would want to with kids having this much power. If he did it I will eat my words but I dont think I will have to.

As a former teacher at this school, I can say that this news is heartbreaking for such a wonderful community.  It is important to note that Mr. Weaver is in his first year of teaching at ANLC and not many people know his history at his previous school.  Never should you jump to conclusions about a person's innocence or guilt, but I am sure that both girls were informed of the severity of these allegations during the process of talking with school administration, their own parents, and the police.  I cannot believe that two girls would intentionally and maliciously accuse someone of such a thing and set out to ruin his life, but I could be wrong.  I hope the facts of this case come to light, as I'm sure there is much more to the story.  And I also hope that all involved (the girls, Mr. Weaver, and the ANLC community) are able to heal and find peace.  Let's not judge, as that job is left to country's judicial system.

I worked with this man. It seems to me that he was set up by the girls.  Why does our society give so much authority and power to young people?  This man's life is ruined and he has been publicly disgraced because of the accusations of two young girls?  At school, the current rule is that students can not use cell phones.  I am sure this rule will change in time; however, Mr. Weaver may have taken the cell phone out of the (back) pocket of this girl because phones are supposed to be put away in backpacks at all times.  Was it smart to physically take it out of her pocket...no, not in these paranoid times; however, it most likely was a disciplinary move.  I worked with this man for four years; and although he is his own person, and somewhat "marches to his own beat,"  he is NOT a pedophile.  I believe huge reparations are due to this man.  Shame on AZ 12 News and Mark Curtis for publicly condemning Thomas Weaver without just proof...and scaring viewers with such sensationalism ...precisely why I will not watch local news.

While I don't like the school's approach to teaching, I do not believe this happened.  For the life of me, I would never, ever, be a teacher or work in the child care field in today's world.  Between the potential false allegations and the vaccines causing brain injuries, etc. there is no way these jobs are worth their grim liability, or your life.  So very sad.

BULLSHIT These charges are absolutely ridiculous. I have been around the weavers for years and Mr. Weaver has NEVER even for a second made me feel uncomfortable or seemed suspicious. Looks to me like two young girls dont get the attention they crave and they went to extremes to get it. Lets face it an 11 and 12 year old clearly dont understand the great affects their actions have on other people. Makes me sick. And if you dont personally know Mr. Weaver, lets stop with the negative comments because you have NO idea who he is as a person and have no ground to stand on to support these young girls allegations, you have no idea what you are talking about and are letting the media persuade your opinions. lay off, and let the family be at peace, they are being put through enough.

Common.  He is a teacher, he should not hug students.  If the police and probably the district attorney believe there is enough evidence to present a case, then there is more then the two girls claims.  Furthermore you should not accuse the girls of anything, they are victims of a crime.  Would you like your daughters, little sister or some who you care being sexually harassed by a man they are suppose to trust.  So far we know the teacher has made some bad judgement calls.   Last time I checked he is still innocent until proven guilty in America.  But bashing the side of the victim is one of the worst things that you can do.  Shame on you for calling the victims names because they are the innocent children.  Furthermore those of you who are protecting a potential pedophile instead of the claims of the little girl must re-exam there view point.

Instinct told me these charges were bogus BEFORE I read the comments.  My next thought was Who did Weaver Cross?  Who did he whistleblow on?  Or who was he about to blow the whistle on?  This is really muddy water.  To have charges levied against you based on the say-so of two minor children?  For those of us who have suffered real sexual harassment and could get no attention to our plight and even witnesses were intimidated against validating the truth - adults who have had our careers derailed due to sexual harassment of a serious nature, to see this is a slap in the face.

Just like at Penn State more people seem to be worried about the accused rather than concerned about the victims.  Get a grip folks

My wife and I have been aquainted with the Weavers for years. Our daughters attended school together, EL thru HI. My daughter has had "sleep overs" at the Weavers many times in the past with absolutely ZERO issues. I don't know the girls who are making the allegations, and I in no way are accusing them of lying. If they are in fact victims, then that is very sad indeed. We ALL want to protect our children, but it is unfortunate that in alleged child molestation cases that the mere accusatiuon of impropriety is enough to put any adult into a "guilty until proven innocent" situation. A sad but true fact.

1. I have known Tom for years. 2. I am also a teacher and know, particularly for male teachers, that accusation from parents, and students can be leveled for right, wrong, and misinterpreted reasons.  Let's leave Tom and his family in peace and let the facts come out.

How does a teacher fondle a breast in the middle of a library with two ther adult and 30 other students present?  Oh and for shame for teachers to hug students!  What is this world coming to?  If anything, there's poor judgment but no malice.

I go to this school and the girls saying this tend to exagarate things and are both friends. However I have seen Mr. Weaver walking around and during open house at the beginning of the school year made some interesting remarks to say the least.

There's no way. He's been my teacher and mentor for years, I've known him my entire life. And as a teenage girl, he has never even come close to doing anything remotely inappropriate--ever. I just hope those lying girls come clean, and realize the effect their lie has on his life. It doesn't surprise me that the girls would lie, but this still makes me sick.

We need to be careful when we as adults continue to advocate for children WHILE at the same time not allowing so much power in the hands of [some] of these kids.

It is terrifying to know that a man's life- a man who spent all of life as a great teacher with no incidents, no previous records and no other allegations at ANLC- can be ruined because of the power of immature children can wield through spitfulness, and without truely realizing the damage done.

If people have heard the two girls plotting to get revenge on Mr. Weaver, how come that hasn't been reported to the school administration and police, or has it been?  I wish there was more information regarding what is being done about all of this...

Sooner or later someone in the media is going to end up dead as a result of their sensationalism.  Maybe then, finally, they will learn a lesson.  And I, for one, will not be shedding any tears.

according to other students, he did not take it out of her pocket, she handed it to him.  sounds like one angry little girl doesn't it......

Teacher

The teacher training at the beginning of the year explicitly stated what should be done with a cell phone violation and Mr. Weaver demonstrated poor judgment when he reached in the back pocket of a student to get the phone.  Whether it was a disciplinary move or not, he violated the school's policy on cell phone violations (in which teachers are NEVER to take away the cell phone, but report it to the office for the administration to appropriately handle).  According to reports, this happened a few times.  While, I do not believe that his stupidity in this incident warrents these charges, it is questionable, especially since there were several witnesses.  I hope the truth comes out and either way, it is a terrible situation.

If there is one thing I have learned, it is that anyone is capable of doing anything.  You may know a person intimately, but there is still a chance you know nothing that circles in the dark recesses of any one person's mind.  With that said, I have no opinion on who is the true culprit/ victim in this story.  Either way, someone is obviously capable of evil that others around them are certain they are incapable of doing.

I am certain that Mr. Weaver and his family have been going through a great deal.  He at least is an adult who can advocate for himself.  These girls are young people who have not yet gained the ability to defend themselves.  I like you or anyone else can not begin to know how much they have or are suffering.

Seems to me that it was more than 20 years ago that Scottsdale school district made a policy of no hugging - no touching the students.  In this day and age I do not accept your second sentence.  Too much wierdness going on.  That kind of thinking enables one to blind oneself to the crap going on - giving oneself an excuse - something that we should be able to do, but unfortunately we cannot.  Just look at how many years the Penn State problem went on because of everybody making similar assumptions - that the authorities would address it if it were real (in that case.)  This rag does not say what it knows to make this safe to be news - but the say-so of 2 little girls is not enough.  A google search did not show me that any other local media has mentioned this case.  Perhaps Mr. Weave angered some powerful person(s) and he is being made public example of.  Maybe these police and this DA are exemplary in conduct - I don't know them - but plenty are not - plenty are doing the bidding of their corporate owners only these days.

To Hootow, I completely agree with your comment about the Penn State abuse. You nailed it regarding people being "more worried about the accused than the victims." It IS disgusting. But in my opinion, the scenarios aren't the same. The Penn State abuse was actually witnessed by a 3rd party. In THIS case, there is no proof. Again, I've been aquainted with this man for some time, and I just think that it is an unfortunate reality of life that an adult can go to jail based upon hearsay alone. I don't want to diminish the pain of the victim, but I'm not clear (yet) who the victim actually IS.    Respectfully.

The reality is that no one knows at this point what is going on.  It is always easy is to add "our opinions" however some serious allegations have been leveled here.  Let's respect all involved.  In fact, to everyone who is commenting, none of you were there either!  Please support all involved but accusing the accusers and calling some child nasty names only shows the stupidity and ignorance of the many.  Here are some verifiable facts.  1. Most children will have to report sexual contact with an adult an average of 7 times before anyone does anything.  2.  Many sex offenders look and act normal and unassuming for many years (see Penn State right now) 3. 1 in 4 girls will have unwanted sexual contact with an adult by the age of 12-14.  People, allow the process to take place before jumping to conclusions.  Mostly, refrain from the ridiculous nasty comments aimed at  the young girls who have come forward and had the strength to stand up when they felt they were wronged.  The truth shall come forth in the coming days and months.

Why do veterans always point out that they are veterans when it has nothing to do with the issue.  Looking for attention?

restitutiontouscitizensfirst
restitutiontouscitizensfirst

What is "emotional" about admitting the facts that children can also be quite devious and manipulative?  Anybody who has worked with children knows this to be true yet some of the posters here act like they have never encountered real children with their stylized pictures of perfectly credible innocence.   NO, we do not enjoy the benefits of the best system available, especially not our educational system.  Most recently we had to be told this from someone born somewhere else, Fareed Zakariah. . . . . .

http://globalpublicsquare.blog... Did you even read my other post, about Scottsdale School District implementing a no touch policy decades ago?  However, in some schools I have learnt that there is flexibility in the effort to build community and accountability to enhance learning.  I am not familiar with the school in question.

And hello?  "Proud veterans" have been put on the terrorist watch list by our lovely former governor for a reason sad to say, and it is not because they believe everything they see or read, it is because their service caused them to be capable of reading between the lines, or at least in my era it did, maybe things are different now, or is the suicide rate and lack of adaptation to civilian life after recent wars merely more government fiction?  This is all the truth you need to know.

america for americans
america for americans

Ok It is ridiculous to dignify your clearly emotional comments but here is the reality.  There are guidelines to arresting someone and if you don't like them then vote to change them or move to another country.  I am a proud veteran who has served this country and while I don't always agree with everything done, I know we still enjoy the benefits of the best system available. Yes things have changed and it is a shame that we can't touch our children anymore but there is a very very good reason for this.  It seems common sense that in 2011, anyone in a position such as a teacher should not put their hands on the children and especially in any "sensitive" area.  Clearly, this all could have been avoided if the "adult" in this situation would have just observed some of the more obvious situations which every teacher is trained to observe.
