New Times Named Publication of the Year at 2011 Stylos Awards

​New Times snagged a 2011 Stylos Awards for Publication of the Year.

We beat out La Voz and Que Magazine for Best Publication in the contest that focuses on the Valley Latino community.

Stylos Awards are presented by the Isac Amaya Foundation to honor local, talented musicians, artists, models, and fashion designers, as well as the community's best, including restaurants, nightclubs and publications.


The awards reception is also a fundraising event for the Foundation, which advocates for the increase enrollment of minority and economically disadvantaged youth in higher-education institutions. And it has put its money where its mouth is -- awarding more than $15,000 for scholarships since 2006.

New Times wasn't the only big winner of the night:

Best Nightclub went to Club Downtown, 104.7 KISS FM's John Jay and Rich won Best Radio Personality and Ritmo Latino was given the Best Local Band award. Gallo Blanco was recognized as Best Restaurant.

The year's top activista is Dulce Matuz; entrepreneur, Celso Mireles, and athlete, Anthony Robles.

The Orgullo Award went to Dr. Kent Paredes Scribner, superintendent of Phoenix Union High School District, and Artist of the Year went to painter Gennaro Garcia.

Best New Media Project: Embracing Humanity
Best New Idea: The Rise Project
Best DJ: DJ Musa
Best Organization: Citizens for a Better Arizona
Best Personality: Daniel Hernandez, an intern for Congresswoman Gabby Giffords who exhibited bravery in the Tucson massacre.
