Maricopa County Employee Faces Possible Punishment for Releasing Joel Fox Documents to Arizona Republic

Joel Fox
An unnamed Maricopa County employee is in hot water after releasing records relating to the firing of former Sheriff's Office Deputy Joel Fox.

The Arizona Republic's JJ Hensley reported this morning that documents obtained by "county administrators" last week detail why Fox was fired. The reasons for the termination should have come as no surprise to close observers of his case. Our comprehensive article in April about Fox and his best friend, former deputy chief Larry Black (whom Fox "loves" covered the lies and unethical behavior behind the pair's involvement in a campaign-finance scandal.

Hensley reported that the documents show that a probe into allegations about Fox found that the former captain lied to the public and investigators, violated state campaign-finance law, embarrassed and discredited the Sheriff's Office, and treated a subordinate with favoritism.

Yet Cari Gerchick, county spokeswoman, says the release of records to Hensley apparently violated a June court order.

In May, Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office released about two-thirds of a massive pile of records from an internal investigation he'd ordered into unethical behavior by his top aides. The remaining third, having to do with Fox, was blacked out. State law allows government employees to keep such findings secret until they've exhausted all of their appeals.

After news outlets balked at the black lines, Superior Court Judge Sam Myers ruled that the records didn't have to be released until 30 days after Fox's last appeal.

That appeal hasn't concluded yet, so it looks like the county messed up.

Gerchick declined our request (and that of other news agencies) this morning to view the records that Hensley saw.

No doubt, this gives Fox something else he could sue over. He's got a $5 million claim filed already. He tried -- and failed -- to sue former state Attorney General Terry Goddard. A check of court records this morning shows that Fox's lawsuit against Cox Communications still is being fought vigorously by the cable company.

Joel was fired from MCSO because he is nothing more than a fall guy for the Flaccid Fool.

Hendy was originally supposed to take the fall, but developed a brain hemisphere and two brain cells to rub together and decided to throw the senile old fool under the bus at the Thomas ethics hearings, which may result in a deal between Hendy and the DOJ, should the DOJ ever come knocking for Henderblimp.

Black was then supposed to take the fall, because it makes the MCSO shurf look good politically. However, the Old Goat's testimony at the Thomas ethics hearings don't make him look good politically. He comes off as a senile old fool suffering from dementia because he has no idea what's going on in his agency (think Towelie from South Park.)

Anyways, Joel was thrown under the bus by the Flaccid Fool. No doubt. But it was a long time coming. I think every poster on the NT forum knew Fox was going to get the boot sometime down the road.

Now, let's hope that the DOJ does the smart thing and indicts these mentally sick miscreants.

I don't understand why Fox doesn't just go to his faraway island he told us about and save all those children he fears are being neglected and abused. I am sure he can find at least one other former commander from MCSO to travel there with him. Just like the old days after the hurricane. Helping people and feeling the love. It seems nirvana for Fox.

If there was an order, then they should not have been released.  Honest Joel is not seen that way at MCSO.  I think his best avenue is to rat on H-shott and Arpaio.  If Arpaio was involved in telling him to lie, that would be worth something to the public.

Joel spent a lot of time right here on the New Times forums making his nose grow.  Too bad it takes as long as it does to fire someone from a public sector job.  Any private employer would have shown Joel the door a long, long time ago

If Cox Com lose this fight in the Fox. vs. Cox. I may need to switch networks. Otherwise, Cox Com will raise its rates again. Due to their potential loss in the court battle. But the release of those docs have nothing to do with Cox. So my hope is still up that Cox wins.

I really don't want to see this episode of the Rump Rangers all uninhibited on their faraway island.  But if Joel wants to publish his emails, that might be for amusing reading.

Ellie, the way Fox was handled was backward from how it's normally done. He normally would have been fired for cause and then made to handle the appeal on his own time, since all internal investigating had been completed and termination charges were in place. The shurf simply left him on payroll for another year as a favor to taking the hit for him.

IIRC, the Cox thing is over and Cox won.

The article says it's still going on and Cox is fighting it vigorously. When was it dismissed or settled?
