Joe Arpaio's Whining About Ohio Mayor's Boycott "Sounds Kinda Like a Publicity Stunt," Mayor's Office Says. Um...Duh

Mayor Micheal B. Coleman.jpg
Columbus, Ohio Mayor Michael Coleman
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio got a little pissy earlier this week when three police officers from Columbus, Ohio weren't granted permission to come to Arizona for training with the sheriff's boys in beige. The reason: Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman called for a boycott of all things Arizona more than a year ago.

We spoke with Coleman's press secretary, Dan Williamson, yesterday. The gist of the conversation: Joe Arpaio's pissiness is just about the last thing on the mayor's mind -- and it "sounds kinda like a publicity stunt."

Williamson continues, "It sounds like there was one officer [who] made a big deal about [the boycott]. This is not an issue that was raised with the mayor. I don't believe anyone went to the mayor and said 'hey, this is important.'"

Williamson presumes the officers went to their supervisors, asked if they could come to Arizona for training, and were told they couldn't because of Coleman's boycott. One of the officers opted to go to California for similar "drug recognition" training, one decided to stay in Ohio and not get the training, and the third used his personal vacation time to come to the Valley and defy his mayor's boycott.

As for the boycott, Williamson admits that it's "more of a symbolic measure" because the city of Columbus doesn't do a whole lot of business in Arizona. He says the mayor would revisit the boycott -- and possibly end it -- if there was a good reason to do so. Police training with the MCSO apparently is not a good enough reason.

"I don't think we've been asked about [the boycott] in more than a year so it hasn't been an issue [Coleman's] revisited," he says. "In 2010, when the Arizona law was enacted, there were organizations across the nation [that] stood with those in Arizona who oppose [SB 1070], including a ban on travel there. The mayor supported that."

In a press release from the MCSO, Arpaio says he's considering inviting Coleman to Arizona so he could tour the immigration yard at Tent City, and do a ride-along with an MCSO deputy during one of the sheriff's "employer sanctions opperations"/illegal immigrant roundups.

Again, Arpaio's only considering inviting Coleman to the Valley.

"The whole things sounds kinda like a publicity stunt," Williamson says. "If he wanted to invite the mayor to Arizona, he probably would have invited the mayor to Arizona rather than send a press release out about it. It doesn't sound like a very sincere invitation."

Williamson declined to say whether Coleman would consider meeting with Arpaio -- ya know, if the sheriff ever actually invites him to Arizona.

Dear God, move on to something else King. Nobody gives a fuck what that idiot negro thinks about Joe or vice versa. Is it that slow in Phoenix? Big Joe is king here, and he will be re-elected until he decides to stop running or dies. Nothing you can do about it. Get over it.

why would anyone want to train with MCSO? Unless they were learning how not to run a police department that is!

Obviously, Mr. Williamson is NOT a blue hair from Sun City West.

He actually isn't buying any of this manure being spread by the old asshole from MCSO...

From someone living in Columbus, I'd take the Sheriff over our Mayor anytime!  He's got the cajones to do what is necessary to get the job done.  Coleman is the whiner...and unfortunately he'll probably win re-election this Tuesday.  Most of us here in Columbus see what the Sheriff is doing, and which our own Sheriff's would do the same thing.

Yes indeed. Your comment is spot-on.

Someone needs to enlighten Williamson and let him know it's just plain WRONG to use the words "sincere" and "Arpaio" together.

Most of you in Columbus who'd take our Sheriff haven't seen the main features of Arpaio.  Let me suggest a few:

I.  Prosecutions For Not Liking The Sheriff - lawsuits, settlements, awards and legal fees galoreII.  Murder, beating, rape, withholding medical treatment, loss of medical and nutrition accreditations - lawsuits, settlements, awards and legal fees galoreIII.  Thousands of false arrests and - as the night follows the day -  lawsuits, settlements, awards and legal fees galoreIV.  Nutty Behavior - like faking death plots, buying a 50 caliber machine gun and a tank, or using the entire SWAT team in full gear,  a TV crew, the old actor Steven Seagal, a bomb robot and the Sheriff’s own personal tank  to bust one guy on suspicion of raising birds for cockfighting.  And, of course, lawsuits, settlements, awards and legal fees galoreV. Incompetence and Corruption, as in videotaping themselves having sex in a prostitution sting.  Of course, no charges were filed, but Joe does attract lawsuits, settlements, awards and legal fees galore

All in all Joe's got 6,000 pending lawsuits (more than Nee York, Chicago and Los Angeles combined) whose value will approach a billion dollars

We will gladly send OurPile to you, one way, postage paid, NO RETURNS. You can "which our own Sheriff's would do the same thing..." all you want to.... but you likely should stay with a sheriff who understands the concept of probable cause, and application of the Constitution of the United States. OurPile doesn't seem to understand either. But, you can still have him; duty free.

I doubt seriously that Columbus taxpayers could afford our very costly sheriff.  Over $100 million in misappropriated funds, a half million dollar bus illegally purchased just sitting around and gathering dust, hundreds of millions of dollars in lawyer fees and settlements, and millions more in liabilities in pending cases.

But if you can figure a way to get him to leave Arizona, move to Columbus and take your job, we'll surely wish him good riddance on his way out of town!

It's just plain WRONG to associate the MCSO shurf with just about anything except criminal activity.

You could also say the same about those peeps who keep asking for Arpaio's endorsement.  They only know what they read or hear.  T

you forgot about the lawsuit where the APC "tank" set a man's house on fire for a TRAFFIC warrant. You would have thought he had like a warrant for having 12000 guns or something.

Wonder why he keeps getting re-elected?  Must be someone out there who likes him...maybe he's on facebook?  ya think?

See, I don't know who the players are out there, what your agenda may be, and the agenda of the others who have responded to my comment, but as I said before...he keeps getting re-elected.

I have no agenda or ax to grind in this matter.  I'm just making the comment that based on what I've heard, he's doing a good job.

Not surprised
Not surprised

That's the same incident where Arpaio's top-notch (sarcasm) deputies also chased the family's dog back into the burning house to die a fiery death, and then laughed about it.  They also failed to provide the neighboring family's safety by notifying and/or evacuating them prior to their operation.  I think it all ended on an up note when the deputy driving the tank failed to set the emergency brake before he got out of the tank; the tank roled backwards into a neighbor's car, needless to say, the car was damaged.

Thats because Arizona educational system ranks at the bottom of the scale year after year, further proof voters in Arizona are dumber than rocks.
