Joe Arpaio Opponent Mike Stauffer Comes Out in Favor of Proposed "Arizona Compact" for Immigration Reform

As Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio stands by his hawkish approach to solving the illegal immigration problem, Scottsdale Lieutenant Mike Stauffer, the man who hopes to put an end to Arpaio's reign, has come out in favor of a more moderate approach to immigration reform.

Stauffer, a life-long Republican who's running for sheriff as an Independent, announced Friday that he supports Arizona's proposed version of the "Utah Compact," a statement of principals for humane immigration reform.

The "Arizona Compact" is modeled after Utah's, and is being pushed by Valley politico/Tequila Party leader DeeDee Blase.

It's also received tremendous support from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints -- a rather influential group here in the Valley of the Sun. Read an article about the Compact published in the Mormon-owned Desert News here.

The compact calls for a more moderate approach to dealing with the problem of illegal immigration, and seems to fall in line with the apparent shift in Arizonans' attitudes about illegal immigration.

As we saw earlier this month, Arizona's most infamous border-hawk, Pearce, was given a voter-assisted boot from office, much thanks to his extreme, brown-bashing attitude towards illegal immigrants. Not to mention, a recent poll shows that 78-percent of Arizonans support a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants who've been productive members of society while in the country for an extended period of time. More on the poll, conducted by Arizona State University's Morrison Institute for Public policy, here.

The proposed Arizona Compact calls for leaders to consider the following five principles:

FEDERAL SOLUTONS Immigration is a federal policy issue between the U. S. government and other countries--not Arizona and other countries.  We urge Arizona's congressional delegation, and others, to lead efforts to strengthen federal laws and protect our national borders.  We urge state leaders to adopt reasonable policies addressing immigrants in Arizona.

LAW ENFORCEMENT We respect the rule of law and support law enforcement's professional judgment and discretion.  Local law enforcement resources should focus on criminal activities, not civil violations of federal code.

FAMILIES Strong families are the foundation of successful communities. We oppose policies that unnecessarily separate families.  We champion policies that support families and improve the health, education and well-being of all Arizona children.

ECONOMY Arizona is best served by a free-market philosophy that maximizes individual freedom and opportunity.  We acknowledge that economic role immigrants play as workers and taxpayers.  Arizona's immigration policies must reaffirm our global reputation as a welcoming and business-friendly state.

FREE SOCIETY Immigrants are integrated into communities across Arizona.  We must adopt a humane approach to this reality, reflecting our unique culture, history and spirit of inclusion.  The way we treat immigrants will say more about us as a free society and less about our immigrant neighbors.  Arizona should always be place that welcomes people of goodwill.

"[The Arizona Compact] reaffirm my beliefs in the rule of law and the constitutional enforcement of the laws and statutes passed by the legislature," Stauffer says. "These declarations also reaffirm the community's trust in the discretion of their law enforcement officers in the performance of their duties."

Being the liberal leftist you are I doubt you would do anything violent under any circumstances.   "Arab league boycott of Israel" ?  LoL. Love it! You are pretty much a classic brainless lib.  What are you going to do when mommy and daddy toss you out of their house and you have to pay for your own food and internet access? LoL.

So in other words, he favors a hands off approach.  What a Rino.

You are one uninformed bigot, aren't you?

nope, I am very well informed, and I am not a bigot. I have an intense dislike of groups of people who allow for the rape of underage girls/boys. I also am against religions that are sexist and wholly un-American. The Mormoms fit this description to a T.

I don't know who you are but anyone with a username.. Xsucks is pretty childish if you ask me. How about you attack my argument instead of me.

There are two kinds of people that I can't stand, those who are intolerant of others based on their ethnicity and the Dutch! Nigel Powers.

"...I am not a bigot. I have an intense dislike for groups of people..."

Based on your comments, do you believe that Jerry Lewis, Russel Pearce and Chad Snow are all members of the same church that Warren Jeff's belongs to? You characterized yourself as a "very informed" individual. How do you answer this very simple question? Now I will admit, two of the three names I used as examples have not been good examples of the tenants that the LDS community cherishes, but LDS members also believes one can be forgiven of their sins, so there is still hope for both of them.

I am assuming the money you are referencing is State assistance and welfare funds that the Jeff's clan has been fraudulently collecting for decades. I assume this because you failed to specify. The problem is, I can't figure out how the LDS church fits into that scenario.

The church has a welfare system, however it is sustains itself and is much more efficient than the State and Federal systems. Are you suggesting that because there are members of the LDS faith in some government positions who are purposefully allowing welfare fraud for the purpose of sustaining Jeff's criminal syndicate? If that is your position, it is freaking brilliant!! You are right, I can't argue that kind of logic! Perhaps my assumption is incorrect and you have something more substantial to bolster your bigoted stance. I so, I apologize for conclusion jumping, but you didn't leave a lot of information explaining your argument. One question- how was the church able to influence the government in the State of Texas to do the same thing?

PTCGAZ

btw I would like to see you attack that argument because you can't.

I can answer that one easily, try as they might, the Mormon church CAN NOT separate the money they allowed to flow to Warren Jeffs via the government of UTAH, just like Russell Pearce can not separate himself from the money that the state of AZ sent to Colorado City. So therefore whether or not they are separate isn't the issue for me because I can read between the lines and see that while the Mormon church tries to keep itself separated from the FLDS due to political reasons, they are attached at the hip and will continue to be until the governments of AZ and Utah and the Mormon church all band together and keep the slime from being able to abuse children, laws, and our taxes.

what invasion? the type of invasion mentioned is not dealing with hordes of immigrants, but rather hordes of people with arms...

They each have 2 arms!

Couldn't resist.  How many thousand make an invasion?  If you are an infidel in Muslim land 1 constitutes offensive invasion?  We have millions?  If they meant hordes of people with arms they would have said so.  They did not.

As someone who was part of the original "Civil Rights" movement I am personally insulted when illegals cry "racism" and state that their cause is a civil rights issue.  Then take it to their own government!  If US intervention has created so much problem in Mexico they should fight for their "Civil Rights" with their own original government - but no, we here in the US are an easier target.  We have "moral imperatives" that no other nation on the planet suffers from.  Plus we pay them to come here and fight with us - such a deal!  Win-win for them!

You all sound like ignorant "white" liberals.  When you have been a Spanish speaking US citizen with overtly "Mexican" features and have to deal with this daily maybe you will have a clearer picture.

Furthermore, this is not, and has never been, a race issue.  Informative, how some of you are so hostile to people who "play the race card" on other issues and then you are so willing to "play the race card" yourselves in order to stifle true discussion and discredit opposing opinions on this issue.  Yes, how you choose to argue informs me as to the status of your moral compass. . . . not intact - loose screws will result in failed policy.

I'm sure you were part of the "original" civil rights movement. You were more than likely unleashing dogs & spraying water hoses on the African Amirican citizens.

I would have been one of the token white people that stood with them and got sprayed by the fire department or attacked by the dogs. As I have already stated plenty of times I am not a racist nor a bigot. I like people equally and dislike them equally (depending on what they have done)I of course am not old enough to have been involved with the civil rights movement since I was born in 1978....

Like hell it's not a racial issue. In AZ it's a few loud vocal racist white people. IT makes me ashamed to be white, with the ideas some of these morons have.

Restitutiontouscitizensfirst

I don't know white people being racist against anybody - they may be racist but they do not show it to me - cuz they know I could file.  I read about those whites here but I do know for a fact that the US Mexican community is all torn up over this at the same time it is supposedly creating solidarity it is also creating extreme division within the community of Mexican descent citizens alone.

I have nothing against Mexico or Mexicans. What I have a problem with are the people in America who are racist.

Demoncrappers are no better.  If we wish to make things better we need to transcend the R-lister D-lister slight of hand shell game and our MSM compliantly keeps the entertainment going so that this time you think - maybe we could really have things better this time.  With who?  Record destroying Romney?  Super Highway Slut Perry?  Former Federal Reserve Bankster that couldn't outsource pizza delivery jobs to China Cain?  God speaks to me personally and tells me what to do Bachman?   What if the consistently ignored Ron Paul got elected?  Would everybody still consistently ignore him, including Congress?  Are they throwing the election to Obama?  Because none of the good old boys want to be in that seat when the SHTF?  I mean really, the stuff they put out is insulting and they can't possibly be serious.  They are just punting.
