Board of Supervisors Will Let Joe Arpaio Use His Pricey Inmate Transport Bus

Joe Arpaio can finally start using an expensive inmate transport bus he broke rules to purchase nearly three years ago.
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's expensive inmate transport bus can finally be put to use, the counties Board of Supervisors ruled this morning.

Arpaio and the BOS have been battling over the bus since Arpaio broke county rules to purchase it in 2009. In response to Arpaio's unauthorized purchase, the BOS refused to license the bus.

Since its purchase, the bus has remained unused in a county parking lot as the BOS and the sheriff have squabbled over whether the MCSO could start using it. In that time, its suffered over $20,000 in damage.

County supervisors Fulton Brock, Andy Kunasek, and Don Stapley reportedly approved adding the bus to the county fleet.

From the Arizona Republic:

"There were clearly missteps ... but hopefully we have addressed those missteps and can move forward in a positive way," Brock said.

Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox was the only holdout, saying the board was setting a "terrible precedent" by retroactively approving a sole-source contract with the company that sold the bus to the Sheriff's Office.

"On principle, it's not right to accept this bus retroactively," Wilcox told her colleagues. She suggested the board give it to the state since it was used with a certain pot of funds that funnel through the state.

Kunasek acknowledged Wilcox's concerns, but still tried to cajole her into approving the bus: "I'm asking you one more time to get on the bus and vote for it," he said.

MCSO Lieutenant Justin Griffin tells New Times the sheriff's office is pleased with the Board's decision.

"This has been a long journey," he says. "Thanks to the hard work from the Maricopa County Attorney's Office and the cooperation of the Board of Supervisors the Sheriff is encouraged by this step forward."

Another classic case of "Who's dumberer in Arizona state government?" I can't decide between the Sheriff, who basically stole from the treasury or the BOS, who basically set a stack of cash on fire. If I were elected and did absolutely nothing I would be more beneficial to this state than these dumbfucks we keep electing.

The key here's to use the bus because they did not pay and is wasting away on a stupid policy. Mary Rose Wilcox, is angry and does not agree, because he knows most of his supporters are riding the bus.

This all after the County sued the bus company for selling the bus w/o proper bidding procedures and had that thrown right out of court.  How much did they waste on that idiotic law suit not including all the legal fees wasted.  Maybe the bus wasn't purchased through proper procedures but you still own the damn thing.  Put it use and move on.  The antics played by both sides is such a huge waste to taxpayers.

How much is this thing going to take to get up and running.. shouldn't be any to get it up and running , idiot.. it's a brand new bus.  To run it is much more cheaper than having to buy several cheaper buses because you have labor costs and fuel cost and more to insure multiple units.

People should think about things before making stupid comments out of anger.  Oh and I'm sure it will be a big billboard for the Sheriff but if it isn't him, it'll be another so get used to it.

The important thing here is to utilize the bus since it's paid for and wasting away over stupid politics.   Mary Rose Wilcox is angry and won't agree because she knows damn well most of her supporters will be riding that bus.

So how much more money is this thing going to take to get up and running and to keep running?

It sustained 20 grand in wear and tear just sitting in a parking lot. Sounds like a high maintenance vehicle to me! Wait till it starts being driven. I'm sure the MCSO will thrash it, too.

Hell, sell the damm thing & purchase older model buses, after all you know AARPiehole doesn't give a damm about inmate confort. The only thing AARPiehole wants the bus for is to use it as a mobile billboard, so he can post his ugly face on & use as a rolling campaign sign. The MCBS should at the very least demanded that the media whore not use the bus for self-promotion.

As soon as the inmates start ripping it up, peeing, spitting, and throwing up in it...it won't be luxurious for long!

it sustained hail damage from hail storm which damaged thousands of vehicles and homes last year.  Not from anything else.
