Are Race/Gender-Based Abortions a Problem Worth Congress' Time?

againstabortion.jpg
Arizona Congressman Trent Franks yesterday reintroduced a bill into Congress that would make it a crime to have an abortion based on the gender or race of the fetus.

While abortions based on race or gender have been a problem in countries like India and China, there's no evidence to suggest that it's a problem in the United States.

Rather, as pro-choice advocates argue, legislation like Franks' "Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act" are designed to further vilify women who get abortions.

See our story on Franks' bill here.

A commenter on our post took it further, claiming that bills like Franks' are "a sideways attack on the medical privacy rights of citizens who want to get an abortion" because "Republicants won't attack abortion head on."

The commenter says Franks' bill is nothing more than "a pill to get those concerned with bigotry issues to come along on the anti-abortion bandwagon."

Either way, as abortion experts have repeatedly told New Times, while nobody wants to see a baby aborted based on its race or gender, there's nothing to suggest that it's actually happening in the United States.

So, we want to know what you think: is a seemingly non-existent problem like race/gender-based abortions worth Congress' time -- especially given its handling of the current economic crisis, which has earned it a dismal approval rating of roughly 12 percent?

Hmmmm...no Chinese or Indian immigrants in America that maybe still hold their cultural beliefs?  Gotta love hypocrisy.  It's bad if its happening in China or India, but in America it's okay as long as it isn't noticeable.

Because Congress has nothing better to do... No it is not worth their time.

Few questions: 1. How is anyone going to prove you had an abortion based on the gender/race of the fetus?

2. What if you already have a boy/girl child and want the opposite for a sibling and balance? (Or you already had 6 girls naturally and were determined to have just one boy...)

3. Who is going to accuse the mother/parents of the crime if this should pass? (Doctors as spies?)

4. Who has abortions based on race? Does anybody know any racists who just like to go around getting down with those they hate? (Clearly something else must have gone terribly wrong, such as rape, if it would be even possible to make the claim it is a "race" issue.)

I could go on and on with this which makes me think it is really just a bad idea to even consider it.

I have to agree with what Justice said -- maybe this isn't a problem with whites or blacks, but if you haven't noticed, America isn't white anymore. I came back from Hawaii, and it's all filipinos and japanese. Alot of asians now, and they have completely different perspectives that aren't your typical Americans.

A Columbia University study in April 2008 by Almond and Edlund proved that sex-selection abortions are happening by the thousands in the US, mostly in the Asian-American communities.

One hundred sixty-three million girls are "missing" in the world, thanks to sex-selective abortion. That's roughly the female population of the United States. And here in these United States we have significant populations of Chinese and Indian immigrants. Do you think the   preference for sons was left at the border? Doubtful. In 1996, Congress outlawed female genital cutting in the U.S. Did you think that was a waste of time as well?
