Should Attorney General Eric Holder Resign Over "Fast and Furious" Flub?

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder is in some hot water over operation "Fast and Furious," the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives botched gun trafficking sting.

Last week, U.S. House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith wrote a letter to President Barack Obama asking that he appoint a special counsel to investigate whether Holder lied when he testified before Congress about"Fast and Furious," and now California Congressman Darrell Issa is placing responsibility for the fed's faux-pas directly on Holder's shoulders.

In a letter Issa wrote to Holder, released yesterday, the congressman tells the AG "Whether you realize yet or not, you own Fast and Furious. It is your responsibility."

See Issa's letter in its entirety here.

Issa already has said he wants Holder to return to Congress to give sworn testimony because he is frustrated with what he calls "a roving set of ever-changing explanations to justify [the Justice Department's] involvement in this reckless and deadly program."

It appears Holder may have lied about when he knew about the failed sting, which put at least 1,500 firearms in the hands of Mexican drug cartels. There's a good chance that one of those 1,500 firearms was used to kill Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry.

In May, Holder testified before the House Judiciary Committee, claiming that he hadn't even heard of "Fast and Furious" until April of this year.

"I'm not sure of the exact date, but I probably heard about Fast and Furious for the first time over the last few weeks," Holder testified -- under oath -- in May.

However, Smith says according to documents he was given by the Department of Justice, Holder knew of the operation -- and was receiving weekly briefings about it from the National Drug Intelligence Center -- in July of 2010 at the very latest.

See our story on the matter here.

According to Issa, whose Oversight and Government Reform Committee has been pegged with investigating the failed sting, "the facts simply do not support any claim that Fast and Furious did not reach the highest levels of the Justice Department. Actually, Fast and Furious did reach the ultimate authority in the Department - [Holder]."

Holder denies that he lied to Congress, but there already are calls for his head.

We want to know what you think: should Holder resign over "Fast and Furious?"

Holder is f***ed. He should resign immediately. It was a crazy, lunatic idea from the start. If he knew about fast & Furious & didn't stop it, then he is a criminal, should resign, & should be arrested & prosecuted. If he didn't know about what his agency's were doing, (he obviously should have) than he is grossly incompetent & should resign immediately. Either way, he is history. Bye bye Eric. I hear they are looking for janitors at the White house.

Just to add to everyone else's comments, the president should force his resignation now, if for no other reason other that Holder has hurt the administration badly and if he is still in place next year, the entire campaign will have this brought up constantly.  Get rid of Holder now, there are plenty of others to choose from who will be more effective.  He is a liability.

No big deal

This is nothingbut politics. Police departments across the nation do stings the exact same wayall the time, many times in collusion with the feds.

While they'reconducting investigations which sometimes last years, law enforcement agenciesallow criminals to go on about their illegal doings so they can get more evidenceand more criminals off the streets at the end of those investigations. In themeantime the thugs are allowed to deal guns and drugs right here on Main StreetUSA.

Now if in factHolder is found to have lied to those oh-so-honest Congressmen, then I believehe should be canned for lying to liars.

Not all of these guns are being purchased at gun shows, there is no way.  It is a fact that our own government brings hard drugs (cocaine and heroin) into the country because its a billion dollar industry.  I would not find it hard to believe that we are helping to supply some weapons to the cartels.  Its all about public manipulation.  Lets say for arguments sake that you are a political bloc (party is irrelevant) and you want to get the guns away from citizens since that is they best way to resist the government.  An effective tactic would be to make the border so bat shit crazy that the southern border states are clamoring for tighter gun laws.  As the policymaker I give you what you want and what i secretly want, all by creating a situation for my will to be imposed.

Holder should already have been forced to resign for allowing the Black Panthers to threaten people at the voting places, if they didn't vote for the President of Change. Holder allowed them to go without punishment. Screw him.

Bobby

Of course he should resign, because the underlying reason for this operation was gun control, a favorite and fanatical problem with the left. Get Americans to be scared and allow the government to "protect" us.

If Nixon resigns over trying to cover up a third rate burglary attempt...then Obama days may be numbered. He does not win re-election.peace

I don't really care too much about Fast N Furious. Holder ought to resign over the medical marijuana snafu. He's turning out to be a real dick.

What?  Resign?  Well -- yes, but that's not enough for what has happened here.  Clearly this man is a criminal -- he needs to be arrested, indicted and tried.  Losing his job should be the least of his worries.  This poll question does not address what the people would really like to see happen here.  Come on?  It was a clear clandestine assault on the second amendment -- it is ludicrous.  They gave guns to Mexican cartels -- they never intended to follow them -- they were simply providing weapons to their cartel of choice to keep the war going in Mexico -- while blaming the second amendment as being the root cause -- come on?  This is beyond dishonest, it is criminals.

Issa has all the credibility of the pea. He has been on a anti-Democratic president rampage since he hated Clinton, and lead the impeachment vendetta.  I never saw Issa call for investigations into Alberto Gonzales, and he riddled the Constitution everyday while Bush's AG.  Do you really think Holder was interested in getting guns to drug runners, as a policy?  The drug cartels get 1000 guns a day from unregulated gun show sales in the USA.

But these were the last guns in the world and if we had kept them the bad guys would not have had any.

I have lots of ideas for things Eric Holder can do and resigning is only one of them!!

" Get Americans to be scared and allow the government to "protect" us."

Sorry booby, scaring Americans into giving up their rights is a totally republiCON maneuver. It was perfected by the Bush cabal and since you CONS are scared of damn near everything already, it wasn't very hard to do.

Finally, someone else understands that the Fast and Furious program was a drop in the bucket as far as guns being sold by US citizens to Mexican Drug Cartels.  The Government didn't sell the guns, individual citizens are - by the millions.  The analogy is the 1800s with U.S. citizens selling guns to the Native Americans to use against their own country men.

These people selling guns without proper documentation are the root of the problem Fast and Furious is trying to stop.  1000 guns out of millions of guns sold?

The program started in the Bush Administration, not the Obama Administration.   It's effect depends on the secrecy of the operation - I believe Issa is a traitor by revealing sensitive information which puts a law enforcement operation in jeapordy.  Nothing is said about numerous law enforcement officers who have been killed or injured by guns sold to the cartels by citizens, NOT the U.S. Government!  If Issa was so concerned about agents getting killed in general, then he'd be all over the NRA and the gun lobby for encouraging undocumented gun sales at gun shows and fighting against laws to stop them!

Ed
Ed

Huh?  But these were in fact the guns they are using right now.  Plus, members of those cartels keep saying that they get their weapons from the U.S. Government -- one of them testified in federal court that some of their gang sometimes drive up to a U.S. base and load them up in their trunk.  Eric Holder just got caught with one incident -- but apparently the cartels talk about it like it's just common knowledge.

No Ed, millions of guns are sold ILLEGALLY to Mexican Drug cartels by U.S. Citizens in undocumented sales at gun shows and other sites.  MILLIONS each year.  The Fast and Furious program, and the Bush Administration's similar program only tracked 1000 or so guns.  The Government didn't sell the guns, individual citizens are - by the millions.  The analogy is the 1800s with U.S. citizens selling guns to the Native Americans to use against their own country men.

Issa is only bringing this up because the gun industry's lobbyist, the NRA, is promoting gun sales by allowing people to sell guns at gun shows and other sites without proper documentation.  This is the root of the problem Fast and Furious is trying to stop.  1000 guns out of millions of guns sold?  That's a drop in the bucket.

The program started in the Bush Administration, not the Obama Administration.   It's effect depends on the secrecy of the operation - I believe Issa is a traitor by revealing sensitive information which puts a law enforcement operation in jepordy.

You can tell he's playing a political card because Issa is saying nothing about numerous law enforcement officers who have been killed or injured by guns sold to the cartels by citizens, which were not part o the Fast and Furious program!  If Issa was so concerned about agents getting killed in general, then he'd be all over the NRA and the gun lobby for encouraging undocumented gun sales at gun shows and fighting against laws to stop them!

The passing of medical marijuana does nothing to thwart the illegal marijuana production and sale. Stop being so short sighted.

Mexican marijuana is cheaper and easier to obtain, even in California and Colorado.

Legalizing marijuana does nothing to stop cartel violence either. The end of prohibition did not stop mob violence nor criminal activity. Mobs just moved on to other illegal enterprises.

shadeaux14
shadeaux14

Never mind the republicon leadership in the state doing everything possible to thwart the VOTER APPROVED MEDICAL MARIJUANA PROPOSITION so the cartels will continue to make huge profits so they can BUY MORE GUNS.

Bobby

There has to be documentation of high powered firearms, the kind we are talking about. It's all about the left and gun control, disarming of citizens.
