"Occupy Phoenix" Planned for October 15; Protest Movement Spreading Across Country

Categories: Occupy _____

occupy phoenix logo.JPG

They're pissed off at American greed and social injustice. They're relatively leaderless but well connected through social media. And they're gonna Occupy Phoenix on October 15.

The "Occupy Wall Street" movement that led to 700 or so arrests in New York City over the weekend is catching like wildfire, with more left-leaning protests planned for major cities in the upcoming days and weeks. Crowds began camping outside Los Angeles City Hall on Saturday.

The Phoenix version is ramping up with a Web page, plus info feeds on Facebook and Twitter.

According to the Facebook site, organizers want protesters to "flood into Cesar Chavez Plaza" on October 15. Minutes from a meeting of organizers yesterday, however, seem to indicate the group intends to march to the State Capitol the day before. From the minutes:

26) Start at the capital and end at cesar chavez plaza.

27) End Friday march at 5pm so the news can cover it.

If you know more details about what's going on, feel free to comment below. Plus, we'll update this story when we learn more.

One author on the Facebook site implies that "Occupy Phoenix" will naturally focus, in part, on Southwestern issues:

After tonight's meeting I came to a realization, "Occupy Phoenix" means something different for everyone, in particular that this land has already been occupied while we have turned a blind eye. We are in solidarity with the Diné and O'odham Nation who have been fighting this colonial system for hundreds of years. To fight the banks and wallstreet is to fight colonialism! In addition there are already struggles in Arizona to support. There is ongoing resistance the CANAMEX/NAFTA Highway projects, and the Arizona Snowbowl. Stand with indigenous resistance to colonialism, and against the destruction of the earth for profit and recreation.

Other minutes from the meeting suggest that "Occupy" protesters may want to have talks with the local Tea Party, hold a "Day of Rage" event at the Capitol and "legally occupy the streets and march perpetually."

Unlike protests in, say, Yemen or Egypt, the "Occupy Wall Street" movement supporters aren't asking for anything as specific as regime change, (which we get every few years, anyway.) Their demands are sort of vague.

But these people are digging in and it seems likely their efforts will have an effect on the overall political conversation in America.

UPDATE:

Laine Baker, an administrator of the Occupy Phoenix Facebook site, wrote to us after this post was published and said the Tea Party won't be contacted, after all.

"I am unsure as to why information about us contacting the Tea Party is in our meeting minutes, as we did not as I am aware," she wrote. "We have eight admins on our page which can sometimes cause confusion. Perhaps the issue was discussed among the poster and a few other attendees. Regardless, we will not be contacting the Tea Party."

NEW UPDATE:

Laine wrote back again to thank us for that update, and clarify the timing of the march and "occupation:"

"The protest begins on Saturday, however, there is a march on Friday preceding the occupation primarily to rally support and get the attention of local news outlets. We will end our march outside of Cesar Chavez Plaza. Also, it actually turns out that only one attendee of the meeting mentioned reaching out to the Tea Party, but it was immediately dismissed. We had more than 60-65 members in attendance last night."

The next big date is Nov. 5th 2011. On or before withdraw from any inter/national bank unless it is a mortgage account. Change to a credit union or local bank[if any still exist!].  Eventually all mortgages will be rescinded [Jubilee], unless a ligit lender holds the signature.

What kills me is that it's so easy to look this up. See that that little plus sign next to your tab? Hit that. It'll open a new window and look up what you need. I mean honestly that only took me 6-7 seconds tops.

KFYI's Barry Young was somehow gifted a recording supposedly from a young dimwit at NYC's Zuccotti Park OWS and was able to use this recording to advocate violence to stop the peaceable protests as well as characterizing that there are human feces all over the area now - if that is true perhaps bathrooms have been closed as a possible peaceable way of forcing protestors home?

Forewarned is forearmed,  KFYI Phoenix's own BARRY YOUNG is advocating violence against peaceful protestors!

I agree with the position statement of the OWS protestors and were I physically able I would be in Phoenix protesting as well.  I have no way to know if this were not "astroturfed" just as the tea party was astro-turfed or just as the "arab spring" was a cia invention - truth be told the media has been inciting us to protest for several years now and I have seen numerous incitements to get the US people marching in the streets.  Why this particular one finally took hold I do not know.

There are a lot of trolls in this thread, but I'm getting on my "F You" soapbox.I started off homeless and worked myself up through the "ranks". I've starved and dumpster dove for meals. I taught myself all of the life skills I know. I didn't have any handouts and started off on the bottom. I now work two jobs through college, have a near perfect GPA and I am an unmarried mom, BUT I have a good life, food in the fridge, a 401k, a nice sedan. I've never asked for a dime or any help from anyone or any government agency, spare the times I went to the soup kitch when I lived in a car (mind you, still kept a job).I don't have a lick of debt, not even student. NO ONE here is more hard-working and has more life experience. I am what's left of the motherf*king American Dream. I want better things for my son.So to all you unbelievably ignorant and arrogant people saying "get a job socialist hypocrites", get this, and understand: I HAVE TWO, I am young, I drive a Ford, I make kick ass apple pie, and just because I work hard for nice things doesn't mean I can't dislike insane corporate greed, massive tax loopholes, massive bailouts, health insurance that doesn't insure, the list goes on. I am proud the people are standing up and exercising their rights in a democracy. You should be too.

Do you realize that most of the folks of OWS are running this revolution using all manner of corporate products?  A bit hypocritical.

I agree that if you want to object to a corporation, don't contribute by buying its products.  So why does OWS still contribute to corporations, or is this all not what it's about?

The more that people wake up and see that Bush and Obama both supported bailing out Wall Street the better.  Both parties are corrupt.  Bush and Obama both increase our debt, both create more war, both use illegal signing statements, both disregard the law and the Constitution.  More government of more corrupt people is not the answer, regardless of labeling themselves Republican or Democrat.  The policies remain the same.

It would be important to stay focused on the banks and Wallstreet, and corporate greed. When you broaden to more issues it takes away validity and dilutes the message at this time. Arizona must focus on the message not on our areas other issues.

Actually is has been proposed that people where suits, lol.  And this is not a picture of hippies, but a cross cultural picture of people that have been screwed over in the name of growth.  Anyone who wants to blame Obama for the current state has not looked back at the past decades of America.  You don't get lung cancer from three years of smoking.  It is typically after a long time of abuse.  Now the house wants to deregulate all the pollution controls in the name of economic growth.  Drill baby drill.  Do none of these "christians" feel they have a responsibility to protect the earth.  I used to go to church, but can't anymore without hearing a political agenda.  Blaming, the gays, transgenders, illegals, socialists, muslims, etc....the list is endless, for all the problems of the day.  Give me a break.  Love is mentioned over 130 times in the bible.  Guess they can forget that.  That is a whole other agenda and personally, I thought this was America, a melting pot of diversity, but there always has to be a scapegoat.  I demand, as an American, to worship the God of my understanding, without imposing my own values on anyone.  I demand that my rights as an American citizen  are not taken away, which they are in AZ.   I demand the right to choose, what happens to my body, what person I choose to marry.  Heterosexual marriages don't work anymore, so why should someone tell me what gender I need to marry.  I demand that the people in government take care of the earth instead of allowing it to be polluted.  I would like to give my grandchildren a beautiful earth with a clean sky and  clean waters and land.  I demand that before we create anything, we figure out a way to recycle it, instead of throwing it into the earth.  I demand to be able to buy things made only in America made by American workers by work places in America. This is a beginning and there are more demands by other people who have been disenfranchised  by our government and corporate greed.  Stop the arguing and listen to the people who are hurting.  Get something done to begin to move America in a positive direction that benefits all Americans.   I am all for getting rid of the parties, and limiting election money and running on principles that are good for everyone.  I am trying to get a business going and the fees are crazy.  Over 12% is charged to pay for social security and medicare of which I won't see a dime, another entitlement program.  I would like to get insurance, but no one wants to work toward that, but I should pay for things I will never see.  As someone who is well traveled, I have never heard large populations saying that having socialized medicine is bad, accept for the stupid american's who don't research and just listen to what is being spouted.  They have heard some people say.....well, some people don't make a whole and some people open their mouths and don't know what the heck they are talking about. And many countries are not owned by the pharmaceutical companies, that stand to loose millions. People don't even know what Obama care is all about and yet have plenty negative to say  about it.  Give me a break.  I don't care what party you are from.  You better know what is coming out of your mouth instead of it being a lot of hot air.  I don't have time.  You better have a real knowledge and research based argument to make or you are of no merit.  Start researching all the people who took stimulus money and then acted as if it was the worst thing ever.  Start looking at all the huge corps, in your back yard and see who owns them and what there money is going for, and their political agendas, and the ugly smear campaigns they generate from their money.  Then just watch how many people believe what comes out of their mouths and how quick people are to repeat the propaganda. Eh Bobby, your words have no merit and are uneducated, walking proof of what I and others have been saying.  There has been so much information on how the banks screwed people over that I can't believe that anyone still wants to believe that people didn't get set up by banks that were in it to make money no matter who they destroyed.  Corporations in and of themselves are not necessarily bad.  The government is a corporation. However, our government has given many the gateway to take advantage of Americans and the poor in other countries in the name of wealth, they have gotten rid of our civil rights as free Americans and decided that we need to be controlled. I believe the meaning of "Right to Work" states need to change.  I sincerely hope that people really look at what is going on and see that Americans are angry.  I have never seen an uprising such as this and I hope it persists until those who have their heads in the sand see that we need action and not blame.  We need jobs and pride in America as being the best instead of seeing this as a bunch of hippies with nothing to do.  These are Americans,of all ages, from all occupations and walks of life.  They are hopeless and need help, angry and need resolution.  People who are fed up with the status quo, do nothing, same as usual people who do not have the 99% of Americans in mind. Americans are not working because they are lazy or looking for a free ride.   If things do not get resolved, we will look like the rest of the world, where only fighting and wars exist because of inequality.  I would hope for more than that because the status quo of deregulate and control isn't working anymore.

What dollars dude ? This occupy " the streets " is perfect . We need a revolution . The Arab Springs ahead to the American Fall . We have to keep the pressure on . We did this whole revolution before , but this time it's about the rule of law and accountability . WE HAVE HISTORY ON OUR SIDE . THEY SCREWED US AND THEY MUST PAY , PREFERABLY IN LARGE CLEARLY MARKED BILLS .

to say that the demands are vague is to say that people don't know what they are angry about . people , i think , are upset with money running roughshod over democracy . stealing elections , manipulating the masses , and raiding the treasury . none of this is new . it is a classic struggle amplified and magnified by an over reaching group of misguided zealots ( republicans ) . it is simply good vs evil .

Telling It Like It Is 2007
Telling It Like It Is 2007

"Socialism" is a dirty word in these parts of the country but let me tell you something. It is nothing more than a group of people banding together to do things that individuals cannot do privately for themselves. Think about that for a while and drop the political rhetoric. Many people  living in rural areas in America in the 1940s and 50s still did not have electricity unless they actually lived right in town because private utilities did not have the economic incentive to bring it to people on the farm, not enough customers per mile of utility line for them. It took the government helping fund electric cooperatives to make it happen. Socialism? You bet. Our seniors did not have anything really as a social safety new to help them in their retiring years until Social Security and Medicare came along. Try taking those things away now - even the most die hard Tea Partiers won't suggest doing that, but again thats "socialism". Maybe we should just do away with all public education and make education entirely private like it used to be in the early 1800s - after all thats (gasp) socialism.

Why is everyone so confused about the message of these protests? I heard about them from a friend, became curious and got on a computer. In a few minutes I had watched some vids on youtube and found occupywallstreet.org. From these sources it was quite simple to understand that this is a movement demanding to keep corporations out of the political process, and to demand justice be served to the criminals on wall street. I'm still checking facts and doing research- still not sure of my exact opinion either, but for a person to say that this movement and these protests are scatter, unorganized and unfocused appears to be a direct result of said persons laziness. Furthermore, to label it exclusively a leftist, hipster, democratic, radical leftist, etc movement seems to be unjust and a clear indicator that facts are not being looked into and considered.

Southwestern Issues: remember the elderly choosing medicine over food. I'm 61 and vegetarian for health and economic reasons. I eat from food banks monthly. Healthy? My meds are $1500. a month. I have state insurance but receive constant notices that the program is being stopped. I'm not alone, in fact, I'm better off than many. Remember us.

Thank you Duncan,  I've been spreading this message for over a month, I know a great number of people who WILL participate.  In fact the only people I'VE talked to who aren't doing it on 11/5/11 have already made the move to a credit union.  Personally I made the move over a year ago and I haven't been hammered with one overdraft or excessive charge since...Bite My Happy Financially Flush Ass Bank of America!  Credit Unions ..great institutions, great employees, great services.  The only "fee" is 5.00 per month, you can avoid that by making 3 small [pack of gum] credit card purchases per month!  Incidently credit unions are not privately owned, they are generally owned by the depositors.  So COME ON DOWN, YOU joining us only makes us and YOU stronger.  and NO I don't work for any credit unions, if I did I would recommend: Advertise, Advertise and Avertise leading up to the 5th, and hire extra employees!  To big to fail my ass, see how attitudes change when the slogan becomes... not enough customers to exist!

It's interesting because some of the organizers in OWS claim to be inspired by or to have participated in Arab Spring.   But they definitely were involved in the G20 and the protests in Spain and Greece.

And this is what most people don't understand.  It isn't about Rep or Dem or even any particular American issues-the point is to try to make hay of upset and "destabilize".

You can see it in the OWS email that were leaked today where Lisa Fithian, one of the main organizers states that explicitly.

What if i do want change? I want the government to serve the people, and the people to be willing to do their part and pay taxes - at an even rate, that way everyone pays a fair amount. How about politicians who dont lie about everything, tell people what they want to hear and then once elected show their true, corrupt colors, and let everything that is important to our environment, our society and our country fall by the wayside for their own personal gains. I dont know if im republican, democrat or libertarian or tea party or socialist. I think i probably share some views with each of these groups, but I do know and have faith that our country, although it may be on a dark path, can reclaim its place as the greatest country in history. The pinnacle of life on our beautiful earth. We have the tools, but we need to UNITE. We all share some view or another. I think it would be much more beneficial if we could find things that we agree on and not focus on our differences. Perhaps quixotic, but maybe just crazy enough to work.

Funny, most of the stuff you wrote I have never said I disagree with. But what gives you away as a typical leftist/ethnic supremacist, is commets like ," I demand my rights as an American citizen are not taken away, which they are in Arizona." Really bro? Your'e an American citizen but you don't have any rights in Arizona? I've never heard American citizens in Arizona say such a thing. Here's another gem, " Heterosexual marriages don't work anymore". Yeah? Or this  one, " Americans are not working because they are lazy or looking for a free ride.". Here's my comment to you. I know a hands down La Raza ethnic supremacist and or leftist  when I hear or read them, and that's you.

Hmm, "Arab Spring"...couldn't wait for Mubarak to get out naturally, although he was willing to get out and be replaced in elections.  Now, elections have been postponed again and again by the military and Coptic Christians are being killed in the streets by muslims no longer inhibited by Mubarak.  But hey, change. We need change.

ONE of the best things that could have happened to the movement was Tony Baloney, the NY high ranking cop stepped up with his pepperspray.. kudos to those that survived his moronic assault.  What great publicity and the only taxpayer money involved was the cost of the pepper spray and the wages of the gestapo.

Excuse friend, it's President Obama that is willing to take away social security to appease the elites' whos pockets he is in. You see, if he were honest, he would say that" WE" need the money to carry on more foreign wars for the elites whos pockets I'm in since most of my donations come from Wall Street.

Yes,another brilliant move by our corrupt republican leaders.Millions for prisons but the hell with education, health care or anything else that might benifit the 99%. And anyone who thinks that illegals are draining the life blood out of America and getting all this free assistance needs to start checking welfare stats.  TANF (welfare) guidelines are pretty clear and the illegals do not qualify for anything.  The children born in America may, but what is garnered from that is pittance.  This is just another thing that has come spewing hate out of people's mouths without any facts to back it up.  Facts, facts, facts.

Exactly why so many people like myself appear to be apathetic or fence sitters.  I am not rushing into change - I want the whole plan laid out to where I understand it.  When you are too poor to purchase cable and the only TV news you can get is Chinese TV you will learn that Arab Spring was total CIA contrivance.  Then I looked at a world map.  Arab Spring looks like Monopoly game to isolate Libya.  Then go to youtube "Why Gaddafi Must Die" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...      this keeps getting removed and then put back up.  Then I think Tiananmen Square

Question is it true if you someone or are connected some states will pay you big money to own run and profit from a privately owned prison? Are some of these private corps traceable back to politicians that are retired or there family's? So if I get elected into office or friends with some 1%ers I can privatize a state managed service give it to someone as a well disguised bribe if they vote yes on some 30,000 page Bill hidden on page 10,042 ?
