Scottsdale Man Drives Kids Off 40-Foot Embankment. Son Dead; Drugs Suspected

A 7-year-old boy is dead and a 5-year-old girl was taken to a hospital with serious injuries after their father drove the car they were in over a 40-foot embankment yesterday afternoon.

According to the Mesa Police Department, the children's father, 42-year-old Bradley Patrick, may have been under the influence of drugs at the time of the wreck.

Mesa police say Patrick was seen in a beige 2006 GMC Yukon exiting the westbound Red Mountain 202 freeway at the McDowell Road exit about 4:00 p.m. yesterday. In the car were two of his children, Logan, 7, and his 5-year-old daughter.

As the Yukon carrying the family approached the red light at the McDowell exit, it was traveling at full speed, and Patrick failed to stop at the "T-intersection," a witness who was driving behind Patrick later told police.

Directly across from the red light is a steep, 40-foot embankment guarded by a raised curb and metal railing. The Yukon jumped the curb, crashed through the metal railing, and was then airborne as it sailed off the embankment.

The SUV landed in a dirt field, rolled on its side, and caught fire.

Witnesses scaled the embankment and tried to remove Patrick and his kids as the flames increased. The two kids were both seat-belted in and needed to be cut out of the vehicle.

Logan was unresponsive as witnesses performed CPR on him. He was taken to the Maricopa Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The 5-year-old was also taken to the MMC with serious injuries. Her current condition is unknown.

Patrick was also taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.

No charges have been filed against Patrick, but Mesa police say drug impairment is being investigated a possible cause of the wreck -- Mesa Sergeant Ed Wessing tells New Times Patrick showed signs of impairment and investigators found narcotic pain killers on his person.

Glad to hear the little gal is doing better. I don't know the family well but always saw them as happy people. From my few experiences I can say that Brad is a great guy, and it is agreed that he would never intentionally hurt his children. Accidents happen and sometimes CAN'T be stopped. Whatever the case, we shouldn't make them suffer more with harsh words. God be with you Lori, Brad, and Sky Miss Adrienne

How about a follow-up to this article?  You branded the man for "drugged driving," noting that results could take "up to" two weeks.  It's been well over two weeks now.  Was he "drugged" driving or is he owed our sympathy and your apology?

I was there with little Skyler as we were waiting for emergency crews and she is such a brave little girl. I am soooo happy to hear that she will be ok, the family has been on my mind since that horrific afternoon.I also would like people who don't know the whole situation to have a heart and keep rude comments out of this, I was there and saw how "eratic" Brad was and it was no worse than any parent would act in that situation. My heart and prayers go out to the family and all that have been touched by this tragedy

I live in Washington State and my husband knows Brad and the family.  We are just sick to have heard of this tragedy!!!!  Our prayers go out to Brad, Lori, and little Skylar for a speedy recovery from her injuries!!!!!!  I just can't imagine what they are going through right now...Please do not judge until you know the full situation and facts!!!!!!  Brad was a dedicated father and would never put his children in harms way!!!!

I know this family very very well. Please don't assume the worst. Brad is one of the best, most loving dads. It's horrible that he was impaired from his prescribed pain pills. No one is more horrified than Brad himself. He is a great guy and would NEVER have ever imagined putting his precious children at risk. It is a devastating thing that has happened to an otherwise good and responsible individual. His whole family is suffering, including Brad of course. Please just send prayers their way and hug your own kids a little tighter tonight.

I know the family and this is a true tragedy. Brad was not a druggy as many in this blog have assumed. He had a recent back surgery and took prescribed pain pills.

Why is this story not bigger?! This is obviously a huge issue and really upsetting.

Can we all agree that Phoenix/AZ has some terrible parents?

Some of the worst people end up having children. Those children grow up neglected and abused, and have their own fucked-up kids. Cycle repeats. Hey, isn't there a movie about this?

"Showed signs of impairment" ???What the hell is that supposed to mean ?

If I'd just run my car off a cliff at freeway speed, I guess I'd be showing signs of impairment too.

My condolences to the family Patrick for the loss of their boy.

There are so many incidences of vehicles inexplicably leaving the highway at full speed, and if the occupants perish in the wreck, then we can't be sure what happened. Sleep deprivation, particularly in crashes involving cars traveling interstate, is always the assumed reason. Pain killers are all by definition a narcotic. People do not seem to understand the dream inducing value of driving fast in a modern sound deadened and smooth motion car. Unless Mr. Patrick has no valid scrip. for the pain killers, and maybe even if he does, I will have to guess this to be a tragedy that lacks a sinister component... and if so, it will be a tragedy Bradley Patrick will be burdened with for always. Wrecking his fancy ride is bad enough. Losing a child in a situation that was his to control is something no one should ever have to experience.

Dumbass.

I hope the judge assigned to Mr. Patrick's case decides to throw the book at him.

Thanks, Judie6gun, for bringing some sanity to this matter and shutting up those who would judge (or misjudge) based on the limited, and slanted, New Times article.  Although the New Times presents some good investigative stories, it sometimes takes things reported in other on-line sources and selectively spins the story or conveniently omits facts in order to sensationalize.  Thanks for your unbiased observations.

My dear friend pulled these children and father out of the car.  He is deeply concerned for the little girl. I don't want to say her name on here, but please know that she has touched his soul. Let her Mom know what a brave little trooper she was!  He still can't say enough about what a sweet little girl she is! Also, please let us know that she is okay on here, if it's okay with her mom. He is very sad that the little boy did not make it, but I know that it would mean the world to him to know that she is okay. Please know that there are complete strangers, out there still praying for you all! May God Bless you and comfort you in this terrible time.

Very sad - Before Logan was born his mother was standing at an intersection, pregnant with him, and a bus came along and hit and drug her under the bus and he lived thru that.  Pretty sad.

These are my cousins children, and we are all devastated. Please thank your friend for pulling my cousin's beautiful daughter out of there, she is going to be ok. As far as people making negative comments about these parents, do not speak when you have no idea what you are talking about! My cousin is the best mother I have ever known! You have no right to make such horrible assumptions at the expense of others!

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers, she is out of the hospital finally. My cousin is strong, but, of course, devastated as we all are. Logan was a very wonderful and special boy, and he is so missed! Thank your friend again, he is really a hero!
