Warren Jeffs and Polygamist Henchmen Subject of Fine New Book

We remember Debra Weyermann from our long-ago days trolling for stories for the Sierra Vista and Bisbee dailies down at the Mexican border. She was known as "D" in those days when she covered the courts for the Arizona Daily Star, and did a bang-up job.

Fast-forward to now: Weyermann's newly published book, Answer Them Nothing, Bringing Down the Polygamous Empire of Warren Jeffs is a worthy read, even if you already know the outlines of the creepy tale of incest, rape, greed, power, and religious fanaticism..

Weyermann writes crisply and occasionally poetically and is at her best when recounting the chilling anecdotal accounts of heroic characters such as Ruth Stubbs, a young woman who finally escaped from the bizarre cult after enduring a nightmarish existence under the tyrannical leadership of now-imprisoned "prophet" Jeffs.

We were especially pleased by the extensive (and well-deserved) credit that Weyermann gives to our friend and former colleague John "The Senator" Dougherty, who broke the FLDS scandal wide-open in this paper.

Weyermann points to Dougherty's March 2003 groundbreaking story, "Bound by Fear: Polygamy in Arizona," which blew the proverbial lid off one of Arizona's dirty little secrets, and how then-Governor Janet Napolitano was continuing to pretty much ignore the substantial evidence of forced marriages (of underage girls), welfare fraud, and all manner of other wrongdoing.

Napolitano, as most of our readers probably know, is currently the head of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Weyermann writes: "Week after week, year after year, Dougherty and New Times punished Arizona legislators with eye-popping accounts of FLDS bad behavior they'd studiously ignored since the 1953 raid. Special cattle prodding was directed at Napolitano."

She also points out, "With the exception of Dougherty and [Channel 3 TV reporter] Mike Watkiss...the entire Arizona press corps cleaved to tried-and-true, post-`53 raid policy of pretending Colorado City didn't exist, not even in a sunny National Geographic kind of way.

"The Arizona Republic, the state's paper of record, seemed bored by Dougherty and Watkiss' continuing coverage,..Addressing the absence of FLDS press coverage in Arizona, Watkiss nearly shouted, `It's too hard to cover these complicated stories,' in a tone dripping with angry sarcasm."

Weyermann's book is published by the Chicago Review Press.

This is a fabulous book - I think out of all of the books I have read on the subject, this book covers the land trust issue most thoroughly.  Really gives you a good sense of the important, yet tedious, legal work necessary to bring some property rights to the people of Short Creek.

Sounds like you know Uncle "Wink" or winkie well.  26 wives counting Jane his first.  After Jane divorced him and a few were ordered to leave by Warren, he still had at least 21.  Lorraine Johnson, was only 15 when she married "wink" I heard the audio by her father Ray Johnson, as he tried to say she rented a car to drive up there.  Lists were given to the FBI & RCMP 11 years ago in 2000, don't let the government say other wise.  RCMP chose to do nothing after the McGregor Investigation of 1988.  If you work with Nancy M. or Debbie P. they can find me! I have those reports.

Sounds like a good read, I have read 7 or 8 on this subject.  I am on chapter 12, on my second day, reading Prophets Prey by Sam Brower the Private Detective who shadowed the FLDS since early 2004.  Its one of the best, if not the best for me so far.  Its very detailed and accurate.  As an activist inside this issue, when I don't want to lay a book down, it has to be something special!  I will add your book to one of my next to read.

We have a branch of the same sick cult up here in Canada, and it is only after years of heavy pressure by outraged citizens that our provincial government in British Columbia was finally forced to do something about the rapes of underage girls, and the contraventions of human rights at the cult's compound at Bountiful, plus the trafficking of underage girls to the US to fill rapist Warren Jeffs' demand for more "celestial brides." Boys have been forced out in order to make more concubines available for the elders' harems, and the low level of education for the children is appalling. "Bishop" Winston Blackmore has around 26 concubines in his harem, and at last count had 119 children. In the view of many Canadians, the government officials who allowed these abuses to happen are just as guilty as the elders and should be charged along with them. Our fingers are crossed that at long last, the pedophiles at Bountiful will be made to answer for their evil crimes.

Jancis, I saw a documentary on that very subject about a year ago.  What a sick society that would allow such activities to continue.  My thought, send them to Texas and let Perry deal with them, there are cells all around Jeffs, they need to be filled with this vermin.

" What a sick society that would allow such activities to continue."

Finally, someone who gets it. Only a truly sick population would keep electing and re-electing leaders who have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that they lack the courage necessary to protect the Mormon girls from the pedophiles their religion has produced. (and yes, I consider the FLDS to be Mormons)

Unfortunately, they did not bring down the polygamous empire, just its head loony. There are still 10,000 FLDS adherents who still cling to the same insane belief system and absent some vigorous intervention will continue with their degenerate inbreeding and their sexual abuse of children.
