Skull of Human Child Up For Grabs on Craigslist

If you're in need of the skull of a human child, you're in luck; one is currently for sale on Craigslist.

According to the Craigslist post, the skull is "missin' most teeth," and likely is that of a 12 to 14-year-old child.

We sent the seller an email asking for some details about the skull. He didn't immediately get back to us, but told ABC15 he recently bought the skull at a garage sale near 35th and Northern Avenues for $1. He's selling it for $300. He's reportedly had about 20 inquiries about his human skull.

We also sent Phoenix Sergeant Trent Crump an email asking if the Phoenix Police Department happened to be looking for the human skull of a child, and whether it's even legal to own human remains in Arizona.

"[It's not illegal] unless you kill the person to get it," Crump says.

The website www.boneroom.com, a "natural history store," further clarifies the legality of owning a human skull:

It is perfectly legal possess and to sell Human Bones in the United States. One of the main sources of confusion on this issue is that prior to 1987, the majority of human bones for sale here and in other countries were prepared in India. In 1987, India stopped its exportation of human bones. Many US news sources phrased it as a ban on the sale of human bones rather than as a ban on exportation from one particular country with no effect on United States laws.

Once India stopped exporting human bones China took over as the main supplier of human bones to the United States. However, just prior to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing China too stopped exporting human material. No other country has yet stepped up and material is much more scarce than it once was, but a decent number of bones from India and China still remain in the United States and may be freely sold.

How many people would like to obtain a human childs skull & why? What would you do with it? Use it as a Halloween prop, thats only once a year. Kind of creepy I think.

hmmmm, not sure who's worse... a person that would sell the skull of a human child or the person buying said skull.

that is so wrong. the bone had to come from somewhere - murder, grave robbing, absolutely nowhere good. how can you treat a child's body in such a way? disgusting

Well, it looks like the Phoenix PD has did their duty. Confiscated the skull. Rumor has it that Governor GED ordered it to be confiscated because it will prove her theory of headless corpses littering the desert. Stay tuned.

Heh, not creepy at all. It is actually quite cool in my book as it is very interesting to hold something like this in your hands knowing this is what encase your brain. I have a full adult skull and an articulated left human hand. I still have a plastic skull model I put together back when I was seven or eight years old. There are now stores that sell collectable items like this... Necromance in Hollywood and Oddities in NYC.The skeleton parts go quite well with my antique and quack medical instruments collection as well as my mummified animals. Artists like Jessica Joslyn that shows at Lisa Sette gallery in Scottsdale makes exquisite sculptures utilizing animal bones, brass desk accessories and metal finishing with a watchmakers precision and fetch thousands and more dollars. I always found it odd that this stuff creeps people out as it is part of what we are and many people find it fascinating... the Body Worlds exhibits showing plastinated human bodies stripped of skin or opened up and popular worldwide are examples of the popularity of such things. Pisses me off I didn't find this child skull at a garage sale... I never find anything that cool.

Is it morbid, yes, but it has it's educational value for a biology teacher. For 300 you can get a very nice used plastic skeleton model for a classroom, so I have feeling this is going to go to someone for who wants it for home decor. If it had all of it's teeth it would sell for a lot more from a medical supply company.

Not creepy, I collect taxidermy and oddities from around the world. Now buying a child's head at a garage sale for a dollar now that is creepy. Not knowing its origin or where it came from, bad bad news. Everything I collect has papers and I am fascinated I guess you would say with hobbies that for a female are not very likey. I am not a gothic or one of those silly kids who think death is so cool! I admire beauty in things most can't see the easiest way to put it. I am always looking for the next great piece to add to my home I have mostly taxidermy items my new favorite right now is a white goats head with beautiful horns. I do own real human skulls about 4 to be exact and they kept in glass Jewel cases and all have a back story. So, to answer your question for some yes, we do decorate are homes with skulls & oddities and not just for Halloween.
