Joe Arpaio's Newspaper of Choice: The National Enquirer

Who needs the New York Times?
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is quite vocal about his disdain for local news outlets -- New Times in particular -- and now we know why; the sheriff prefers to get his news from publications like the National Enquirer and Globe.

Dan Nowicki, the Arizona Republic's national political reporter, recently took the bait and penned an article lending credibility to Arpaio's claims that just about every GOP presidential candidate is jockeying for his endorsement.

During the interview, the subject of Arpaio's landing himself on the cover of Globe for his ridiculous pledge to investigate President Barcack Obama's "fake birth certificate" came up.

From the Republic:

Arpaio said he doesn't mind appearing in publications such as the Globe or the National Enquirer.

"In fact, those are the magazines that do the best journalistic stories," Arpaio said. "More accurate than anybody else. You laugh at that, but I've dealt with the National Enquirer and their stories are always right down the line, believe it or not."

Yes, the 79-year-old leader of one of the largest law enforcement agencies in the country prefers to get his news from supermarket tabloids that specialize in rumors and sex scandals.

Arpaio's opponent in next year's GOP primary for sheriff, Scottsdale Lieutenant Mike Stauffer, finds the sheriff's publication of choice about as unsettling as we do.

Stauffer recently posted the following on his Facebook page:

Read to the end of this article to see where Arpaio finds inspiration. While I enjoy the storytelling and folklore contained in these publications, I do not base my perception of reality or investigations on what I read in them. Arpaio should spend time investigating the 500+ sex crimes he never worked on, clearing the 70,000 warrants from the courts, etc., rather than letting the supermarket tabloids dictate priorities.

Joe Arpaio is an idiot if he actually believes those stories in the Enquirer, Globe, Sun, etc.

Then again, Joe Arpaio is an idiot even if he didn't believe those stories in the Enquirer, Globe, Sun, etc.

Regardless, the Senile Spinster needs to be indicted and perp-walked. That would be a worthwhile story to read, even if it is in the Enquirer, Globe, Sun, etc. I wonder if they allow reading materials in federal prison cells?

Ole saggy balls can close down his tip line now and get leads from the tabloids.

I remember a headline in the Enquirer in the late 50s which read "I cut out her heart and stomped on it"and from what I see in the supermarket, it has become less legitimate.

The real tragedy is that hundreds or thousands of people have been victimized or treated unjustly and dishonestly in order for Thomas, Arpaio and their clan to put numbers on the board or to intimidate them.  It is only those with resources that could or did fight back, often with a subsequent criminal investigation that was not founded.  These people will never be made whole.

I would surmise that the supermarket tabloids were a bit above Shurff Joe's reading level. Isn't he more on a "Run, Spot, run" level?

He puts on his tin foil hat and looks at the pictures.

I was thinking he still has these stories read to him.

You are rather generous with your praise.  Heck, "Spot" has four letters.

ONe to grow on..LOL Amazing how we as a big city like Phoenix, AZ, are not able to remove this person from office.. I don't understand why its so hard to get rid of him. Can someone please explain that to me?..How come the government allows this? Is he that big of a  power person? What is his power on Americans ? How come his open"bigotry" is allowed in a country that prides itself as the  country of freedom.

It baffles me beyond words how this man has so much power..In the 60's they fought for civil rights and now 50 yrs later we find ourselves in the same battle in  the state of AZ. The sad thing about all this is that he does not hide his wrongdoings and he continues doing it and laughing at us the taxpayers, he has said it to all of us clearly in his own words," I aM not stepping down and no one can make me do it".

He is doing the job of the border partrol agencies. We continue with the unbelievable crime here in Phoenix but he is out there promoting "coloring contests" when are we going to wake up.

We the people have the power to get rid of him we really do..When are we going to use our power? I think we should start a campaign or a revolution to oust this bully like "hitler"monster..

I hope we can wake up from this nightmare he has created..I just don't get why the government does not protect the rights of us people..

the problem is the idiots who keep electing him, combined with that fact that we have made Law Enforcement a political office.
