DEA Raids Medical Marijuana Club in Tempe, Accuses Owners of Running Illegal Dispensary

Arizona Go Green Co-Op's logo. The medical marijuana club was raided yesterday by the DEA.
Days after helping Phoenix police take down violent gang members, the DEA has gone after a softer target: A medical marijuana club in Tempe.

Agents began showing up at the AZ Go Green Co-Op at 426 East Southern Avenue around 8 a.m., according to a news report by Channel 10 (KSAZ-TV). The "owners" of the club, says the report, are Rachael Beeder and James Chaney.

A doctor at the clinic, James Eisenberg, left a note on the door saying he'll be out till October 1st.

We'll get more info on this story later today, but a cursory look at the Web shows that a Dr. James Eisenberg works (or worked) with California medical marijuana clinics in Venice and Hollywood, including one called Pacific Support Services. A CBS news report from February of 2009 mentions how a local affiliate went undercover at Eisenberg's shop, noting his lax exams and recommendations for young people complaining of minor ailments.

Arizona Medical Board records show Eisenberg has been licensed in Arizona since August of 2009, with no complaints on file.

The problem here is simple: Arizona voters passed the medical marijuana act last November expecting to see medical marijuana dispensaries, but Governor Jan Brewer thwarted that legal election and derailed the dispensary program. If the compassion clubs are also shut down, medical marijuana patients -- now totaling more than 11,000, according to the most recent report on the Arizona Department of Health Services Web site -- won't have a legal place to obtain their medicine.

UPDATE BELOW:

pot club closed 093011.jpg
The doctor won't see you now at the Arizona Go Green Co-Op, which was raided by the DEA yesterday.

We stopped by the club. It was closed and nothing was going on there, as expected. The big excitement occurred yesterday morning. An employee of a nearby business told us he saw four agents raiding the place dressed in full "SWAT-gear," including assault rifles, body armor and masks. It's unclear why the DEA dressed as if they were going after Los Zetas instead of medical marijuana doctors, patients or caregivers.

The employee said he and other business owners knew the place had been operating in the small complex of offices, but he hadn't seen or heard of any problems related to the Co-Op. That makes sense, considering recent evidence that closing -- not opening -- a medical marijuana clinic increases crime.

We called the DEA's public information officer, Ramona Sanchez, about a half an hour ago. We'll include her comments and information about this raid if she calls back.

The DEA's Web site contains no information about the bust, though it does tout the recent take-down of "violent street gang members." Our guess is that the Co-Op raid won't be touted in similar fashion -- it's nothing to be proud of, and unlike busting violent gangstas -- which nobody opposes -- raids on pot clinics have more to do with politics than public safety.

UPDATE #2: 5 p.m. and no call back from Ramona Sanchez of the DEA.

Jim/James Chaney's is a TWEEKER (rather a crack-head, as what I like to call meth users). Great research! That explains....A LOT. Go back to your State James!! Both of them.... Rachael.... a Hit and Run... I hate those people.

Concerned patient.

I went here as a patient to discover a very shady operation. They had a lot of product which didn't fit the bill of patients helping patients. Their products were mislabeled and the incorrect medicine could have been supplied to more patients than just myself. When asked about the mislabeling I was asked to leave and then threatened to be knocked out by James, the counter guy who was smoking weed behind the counter. I like the ideas of clubs but we have rules to follow. I am glad this shady operation has been closed down.

What a joke! The voters have spoken. What good is the power of the people if our voices go unheard. This is just one more example of how the US government is blowing it. If we don't regulate this market/industry it will continue to be underground/black-market. No civil person wants to obtain their "medication" from some street dealer or "some dude" their kid knows. Give me a break! This is getting so out of hand it's sad. The people want it and this issue us NOT going away. All the old self richious poloticians need to step aside and let the will of the voters unfold.

"The "owners" of the club, says the report, are Rachael Beeder and James Chaney.

Hey, Ray; are they the owners of the club, or aren't they? If they are, what's up with the "quotes?"

This article and the comments posted are perfect examples of ignorant people who don't know any details making judgements about something they don't know a whole lot about. Nobody here knows any of the details of the case, what lead them to this clinic, or what they found. Nothing to be proud of? I beg to differ. Dirty doctors should be ashamed of themselves and I'm proud of each and every DEA agent that took part in the raid.

On tv they stated that somebody was patrolling the parking lot with a gun. Is there any truth to this?

Jim was overcharging patients, and hardly "compassionate" at all. It sucks to see him taken down like this (I do respect the purpose even if the business aspect was askew), but out of all the clubs in AZ his was the shadiest.  I never felt comfortable or even welcome. The scary part is that they won't stop with Go Green and this will be used as an example to take down other more legitimate operations.

It's a shame, I knew many patients who acquired their medicine at that facility that now must resort to street dealings with medicine of unknown purity.

We understand there is a serious problem with the way Jan Brewer has shown complete disregard for the will of the voters, what would be more useful Mr Stern, is if you explained what the hell were going to do to fix this? Everyday I read NT and article after article the comments are full of people who are outraged at how the elected officials are railroading us. Simply waiting till the next election to try and get these people out not longer seems an option. Does anyone know what it will take for the people to finally tell Joe, Pearce, Brewer THAT ENOUGH IS ENOUGH?? It sounds radical to some, but we need to over throw this worthless goverment

I was quoting from the Fox 10 article. I haven't confirmed they are the owners, but I'm working on a follow-up article.

The doctor that was sucked into working for James Chaney was forced and threatened by James Chaney to do what he did. Know all the facts before you play the blame game. That poor doctor was taken advantage of by that piece of shit James Chaney.

@Guest (about 4 posts up)   You are blowing smoke out of your ass. The Dr. has done nothing and got charged with nothing. It was the people who were distributing that got busted. You know they did a follow up Story the following day and basically said the same thing.... That the Dr. is clean (not charged or anything pending) and it was just James And Rachel that went down...... You should not be so ignorant and try look at the truth before being ignorant and posting it publicly

I'm glad the guy (James chaney got busted in the club. he was a genuine asshole. when i went in there, the guy was a complete arrogant douche. it felt like he was a thug/bully from asking him a question. and with it being a business, they should make it alot better experience.... the dr. part though...getting the app... was a lot better experience. the med room... they were not helpful and were ass's.And you pay extra for going to Eisenberg... cause he guarantees you get your card... or your money back. nice piece of mind for alot of people,

People need to vote and with less than 1/2 of Arizonians doing that in any local election we are stuck with dumb and dumber leaders along with abusive power hungry opportunist. VOTE or until we do we will get the leaders that the old grumpy cracker down the street that yells at kids for walking on his painted rocks elects.

These "people?" will continue to be elected as long as the electorate is controlled by their own ignorance. The other roadblock to having quality leadership is the Theocracy the MORmONS try to shove down everybody's throats. If you don't believe this state has theocratic rule, ask anybody in LD 18 if a non MORmON has a chance in hell of getting elected in their district. It would be as difficult as getting a non-racist elected as Maricopa County Sheriff.

I agree Poop. Unfortunately, conservative ideology thinks it's ok to regulate what we put in our bodies, what we do in the bedroom, and who we love.

@Kiyote10609 People get their facts straight? Well... I do.. I went in there in their Distribution room and they were rude.  Specially Jim, James...whatever...made my visit in there very Sour. So I agree with the few other commenters that mentioned their service and how they come off.  75 dollars, 65 for their lower stuff, for and eighth. wayyy overcharging. So mentioning that too, more like a scam business they were running. Taking advantage of the people who get their card right off the bat. How's that for facts. They should of not come out with a "DISTRIBUTION" and just been a Caregiver like alot of the other people, for the time being. But they saw Greed and wanted to abuse the system, and us people with their prices.

why would people complain about an onsight security guard carrying a gun?  that doesn't make any sense.

What blows me away is that the cartels are being shut down because theres not a market for them anymore. Crime rate will go down substantially. People will stay at home hanging out with their families rather than staying up drinking and using man made controlled drugs. My father has psoriasis over his complete body. He has spent over eighteen thousand dollars on man made steriod drugs, which are damaging with many side effects to watch it barely go away, then it came back with a vengeance. My father bought THC cream from one of the clinics. In just two weeks his  psoriasis has gone away to where you can actually see his skin again.  He feels so much better about himself and is not self-conscience anymore - for just $15 on a substance that is a Schedule 1 under the Controlled Substance Act.  Really?

shadeaux14
shadeaux14

The reasons Canna, or should I say reason, is simple   GREED.

The greed of big Pharma who don't want people to be able to grow their own pain medicine and eat into the huge profits they make off drugs like Oxycontin. The greed of the politicians who' spurred on by the private prison industry's bribes, will do whatever it takes to keep the possession of a single joint A FELONY.The greed of the law enforcement agencies who share in the spoils of seizing peoples property.

Actually there is a second reason.........The pig-ignorant people who think "Reefer Madness" is a documentary.

Actually there is a third reason; the cannabis prohibition helps justify the police state. Without it, not only would the prisons empty, the police force would have to lay off.
