Why Did Three African Refugees Try to Sneak a Fake Bomb Past Security at Sky Harbor International Airport?

Well...fake boom.
While bringing a bomb to an airport is one of the stupider things a person can do. Bringing a fake bomb to an airport might be one of the stupidest -- but it certainly raises the question: why would someone do it?

Three African refugees were arrested after one of them, a woman, tried to pass through security at Sky Harbor International Airport with a bomb on Friday -- well...a fake bomb.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, the woman, 51-year-old Luwiza Daman, a refugee from Ethiopia, attempted to board a plane with an object that appeared to be an improvised explosive device (I.E.D.).

An alert U.S. Transportation Security Administration employee discovered the device --  a cellphone attached to a container holding "organic material" -- as she tried to pass through security at terminal 3.

The Phoenix Police Department's bomb squad, and the Phoenix Fire Department's hazardous-materials crew, were called to the scene, where they determined the device wasn't an actual explosive.

Daman told investigators that a friend gave her the device and asked her to deliver it to someone in Des Moines, Iowa. The recipient remains unknown.

Following Daman's arrest, authorities picked up another African refugee allegedly connected to the faux-bomb, 25-year-old Shullu Gorado, a refugee from Eritrea, who was picked up at his house near 19th Avenue and Camelback Road.

Gorado told police he gave the device to Daman after a third African refugee, 34-year-old Shani Asa, also a refugee from Eritrea gave it to him. He was arrested Monday afternoon at his home near 43rd Avenue and Osborn Road. He admitted to attaching the phone to the device and giving it to Gorado.

All three were arrested on suspicion of having a hoax device and conspiracy to obtain a hoax device.

And the question remains: why would three African refugees try to sneak a fake bomb onto an airplane?

We don't want to speculate, but you're welcome to in the comment section of this post.

Congratulations, with this, you have made it clear that we don't have journalism in this country, just a pack of liars coming from both side, converging in  the middle, to create this mainstream. The absolute zaniness of our paranoia, our desire to feel safe, is a further example of just what people are willing to go through just to get a peace of mind, even if it ends up taking a piece of our liberty, you know, that thing that so many before had given their lives to ensure. Sad and absolutely absurd. We have thousands of people that die here in this country, and yet, we are willing to diverge money and resources to such a vapid occupation.

None of these names are eritrean nor ethiopian names, its nothing other than damaging the image of the 2 nations, especially Eritrea which has been accused unfairly of helping somalian terrorist group al shabab,so i guess its part of the USA'S on going games against eritrean,to impose unjustly further sanction.btw, ppl don't hate Americans but the American gov international policy is forcing ppl to hate you(Americans)

I don't think they are trying to sneak or test the airport security. These people have different culture and a way of doing things than Americans do. The only people who will understand are those who know their culture and way of living. In Americans eyes it is different.

We would probably know more about this story if the individuals in question had been interviewed in their native language. It is being reported via the refugee community that there has been no professional interpreters until this week asked to assist with the English. This is absolutely illegal. The defense attorney could not even properly spell the word Eritrea, much less locate it on a map. There is ZERO connection between Eritrea and 9/11, not to mention that these individuals are Christian. If they weren't against the US government before this experience, after their right have been stripped and they've been detained on these rediculous charges for months if not years, they certainly will be.

The reporter said "He admitted to attaching the phone to the device and giving it to Gorado" . You know what he is calling a "device", a jar of Tahni. This is sad!

This is really ridiculous. Poor africans, you get a cell phone and a jar of food in one bag, you will be suspected of terrorism. America is going nuts. same is true for identifying the govenmet of Eritrea, lead by a chritian "dictator", as a country that funds moslim terrorists. What is wrong with the uS these days?

Why doe's the USA continue bringing in refugees from such countries known to harbor contempt and hatred for the USA and it's citizens?   This year the Administration spent many millions of dollars to bring Palestinians into USA cities.  Hilliary Rodham Clinton and the other liberal Congress/Senate members along with President Obama continues to rush head long into disaster for not only themself with such political actions, but bring disaster to our streets, sticies and USA citizens.  Do they not think, rationlize and consider what has happened in Australia, riots, London riots and Bali bombings along with others throughout the world?

"Why doe's the USA continue bringing in refugees from such countries known to harbor contempt and hatred for the USA and it's citizens? "So you timid little cowards can be kept living in fear and willing to pay all of your money for protection. DUH! The mob uses the same tactics. It's called extortion. You rob people and then charge them to be protected from you.

How can you say these people are from Eritrea. Their appearance seems not from eritrea and it has not Eritrean name. You should examine more closely why these people say they are from Eritrea. All Ethiopia, who come to the West say they are fromEritrea may be granted asylum.

A better question is: Why are they still here in America and not  deported? And does anyone doubt that they are getting full welfare benefits such as free medical care, free housing, free foodstamps and a free cellphone?

Were they sent by our government to determine if TSA would catch them?  And then whoever was supposed to get them out of trouble forgot or got sick?

Shouldn't the story be "Why does the New Times publish intentionally inflammatory headlines with no actual information about the event?" After speaking with someone that has actual information about the situation and the Eritrean involved it seems that the only guilt here is born by the TSA and the media that loves to jump to conclusions about "scary black people with food in tupperware". Oh, and they had a phone attached to the package as both were going to the same destination! Wow! Guilty as hell eh? Seriously, we can't let the lack of explosives, detonators or any other bomb related materials keep us from leaping to conclusions. Oh, my bad, that should read "asking others to leap to conclusions for us in the comments". How many of these stories would have been written if it was a rich white boy from Scottsdale? No mention of how Mr. Gorado is one of the Lost Boys, driven from his war torn nation to America where he volunteers for his community, is putting himself through school and works his ass off at a manual labor job. But gosh James King, you don't want to speculate do you? Seems as if you also would rather not do any actual reporting when it's so easy to just smear "Scary black refugees with food in Tupperware".

Predictably, the pro-TSA New Times does not follow up on what Channel 10 reports this morning:

PHOENIX - Two of three suspects arrested in a fake bomb scheme will be released from jail Wednesday night, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

We've learned the county attorney sent the case back to Phoenix Police for possible further investigation. Right now prosecutors don't have enough evidence to charge the pair.

Which is why the feds stepped in and charged them ...

If peanut butter or tahini paste is attached to a detonator such as a cell phone or battery pack...it becomes a bomb! It's pretty clear.

They need to be placed on the "No Fly" list. And sent back to AfriKa.

Religion isn't a factor in this case. The fact is the 3 African refugees brought what appears to be a homemade explosive devise through security with the intention of boarding an aircraft. That charge is a felony! Sesame paste is a rue because one can purchase Tahini sauce(sesame pase) at most stores across the country. And, a phone taped to the package? Really? To heavy to carry on board?

Ross
Ross

Right.  You can buy organic tahini for $140 a jar.  TSA did say it was an organic substance, right?  You can buy peanut butter cookies at most stores across the country, but oddly enough white people enjoy the taste of homemade.

You mean the suspects, or the TSA suspectors?

Take a white grandmother carrying a jar of peanut butter (I know a diabetic who eats some every night to maintain sugar levels) and an iPod birthday gift, and what do you have?  No big deal.

This is a case for the New Times food editor, to explain the connection between East Africa and tahini.

Of course, it's not just black Africans that TSA will hassle.  If you're a Democratic Congressman, you better watch out also.  From a 2007 story:

One of Rep. Tim Ryan’s (D-Ohio) final hurdles in the Food Stamp Challenge has been dubbed “Peanut Butter-gate” by his office.Last Friday, when the Buckeye State lawmaker was running late to the Manchester, N.H., airport after giving a commencement speech at his former law school, he forgot to remove his jars of peanut butter and jelly from his luggage.  Transportation and Safety Administration officials quickly confiscated the goods and let him pass. Only problem was that those provisions were almost all of Ryan’s food for the next few days.By the end of Monday, Ryan and Reps. James McGovern (D-Mass.), Jo Ann Emerson (R-Mo.) and Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) had completed a week of eating only $21 worth of food each — the average amount of benefits a food-stamp beneficiary uses. Their mission was part of the Food Stamp Challenge.

Well...I'm sure they were Episcopaleans. You know those guys are always up to no good right? Honor killings, threatening those they disagree with. Its a cultural thing. They kill those who disagree with as that is their only recourse to their oh so overly sensitive egos. We all know who has the most fragile egos.

Kcarson

Good point - considering the most Ethiopians are Orthodox Christians.

I'm sure that was the point you were making, right, not that you were trying to slander some other religion.

Take you hate elsewhere, sandbilly.

Well, the guy who gave the package to a friend to give to the passenger, told Channel 10 that he was sending a jar of sesame paste to the Iowa recipient.  He says the other guy added the cell phone to the package.  But his Facebook page says that his interests include Re-Elect President Obama in 2012.  Obama also has African connections and used to have lots of friends in Iowa.  So I am suspicious about all this, especially since many Eritrean and Ethiopian refugees are Christian.  If Channel 10 asked him about his religion, they are keeping the answer to themselves.

Since TSA recently confiscated a pregnant woman's insulin. I'm sure there are many more dangers to sesame paste.  If you want TSA to think you have a bomb, try taking a jar of peanut butter through the scanner.  Add a cell phone and you get a free ticket to Leavenworth.

Probability of 80% to 90% that these charges will be dropped, but that will never be reported.

Zero doubt as to what the 3 African refugees did. A dry run for a bomb (don't ever like to type the word) for a future terrorist act. I'm so glad that security stopped them before they inflicted damage. As a former, retired airline employee, I'm  suspicious of any devious action. If it looks like a pig, smells like pig, it's a pig!
