Morning Poll: Did You Receive a Call Claiming Phoenix Mayoral Candidate Wes Gullett Has an Illegitimate Child?

Wes Gullett
Someone's apparently taken a page out of Karl Rove's book and is spreading a rumor that Phoenix mayoral candidate Wes Gullett has an illegitimate child.

Gullett's former boss, Senator John McCain, ran into similar rumors when he ran against former President George W. Bush in the 2000 GOP presidential primary.

McCain's "illegitimate black child" turned out to be his adoptive Bangladeshi daughter, Bridget.

Gullett also has an adoptive Bangladeshi daughter, Nicki.

According to Gullett -- and the Facebook page of the Arizona Guardian (the story's hidden behind the publication's $360 paywall) someone has commissioned robo-calls to spread the nasty rumor.

However, Gullett's daughter and a few others are the only people we've heard of who've received the alleged robo-calls.

Initially, we thought the rumor was the work of Valley PR honcho Jason Rose. However, Rose's horse in the mayoral race, Claude Mattox, was quick to claim he had nothing to do with the alleged calls.

Then, we thought, "We haven't received a call, and the only people we've heard of who have are Gullett's daughter and a handful of other people."

Gullett's campaign is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to a conviction about the alleged calls.

We want to know how far-reaching this alleged robo-call is -- have you received a call claiming Wes Gullett has an illegitimate child?

Let us know below.

Well, of course. Taking credit goes against the core concept of an anonymous smear campaign.

Neeley and Gullett's ties to Coughlin/CCA should be more a concern to voters than the story about an illeg. child (used to detract from the real issue)..http://thinkprogress.org/justi... Prisons Spend Millions On Lobbying To Put More People In JailBy Andrea Nill Sanchez on Jun 23, 2011 at 12:00 pmYesterday, the Justice Policy Institute (JPI) released areport chronicling the political strategies of private prison companies “working to make money through harsh policies and longer sentences.” The report’s authors note that while the total number of people in prison increased less than 16 percent, the number of people held in private federal and state facilities increased by 120 and 33 percent, correspondingly. Government spending on corrections has soared since 1997 by 72 percent, up to $74 billion in 2007. And the private prison industry has raked in tremendous profits. Last year the two largest private prison companies — Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) and GEO Group — made over $2.9 billion in revenue.JPI claims the private industry hasn’t merely responded to the nation’s incarceration woes, it has actively sought to create the market conditions (ie. more prisoners) necessary to expand its business.

Everyone needs a Bangladeshi daughter.    It's the newest fad and if you don't have one then you're not a celebrity.

The questions should have been, "do you believe Gullett has ties with Coughlin/CCA private prison lobbyist?"

Im not surprised that 94% of your readers did not receive this despicable auto dial. They didnt target the unlawful message at Demarcates and then to insinuate that the Gullett campaign is some how making this up shows just how intelligent and responsible in their reporting the New Times has become. The ironic part of all this to me, is that whoever sent this call out to tell people about an impropriety, broke the law and showed a complete lack of character and integrity in sending out an illegal call. If this is what Peggy Neely and Greg Stanton have to do to try to make themselves look better next to Wes' real plan to get Phoenix back to work, then Wes Gullett is clearly the right choice for Mayor. If you are tired of political games and the status quo, then please use your Vote to get the right choice for Phoenix in office. That is Wes Gullett.

I have numerous friends who received the phone call yesterday.  It was aimed at independent and republican women, which would explain why many of the new times readers did not receive.  To write a post insinuating that this may or may not be real is irresponsible journalism.  The calls are disgusting and vile, not to mention illegal.  Obviously someone out there doesn't want to talk about the REAL issues facing Phoenix in this election.

Gee, you would think he were running against Pearce or Arpaio with calls like that coming out.

Shouldn't that read "adopted daughter" in both cases?

No, I haven't received such a call and I do live in Phoenix.

However, and worse yet, I DID get a call that Mr. Gullett is still being seen pushing his 1985 Yugo Lobbyist around Phoenix. It reportedly gets great gas mileage and helps keep him in shape, should he win the election. He has also reportedly said he is willing to give up his Lobbyist should he win the election.

Seriously, IF such robo calls are being made by any opponent of Mr. Gullett they need to stop. There is NO need for this kind of mush in our election process.

If one candidate can't beat the other based on skills and knowledge they simply need to get out of the process.

GEO Corp. and Goodyear 5,000 more prison beds?? Added to 4,500 at Perryville? Who is making these insane decisions?

"POLITICAL PAYBACK"The privatization plan requires companies to operate prisons for at least 7 percent less money that it takes to run state-run facilities, but Fasano said that promises it would reduce up to $40 million annually were unconvincing and undocumented."It all comes down to politics and the big donors. GEO and the other private companies that run prisons are very big donors to the party here in Florida and to the elected officials, both past and present," he said.GEO Group declined requests to comment. But top executives talked excitedly about the privatization deal in a recent earnings call with industry analysts."This is a very important milestone for our industries and we hope that additional opportunities such as this will develop at the state level in the coming years," said John Hurley, who heads the corrections division of GEO Group, formerly known as Wackenhut Corrections Corp.Kevin Campbell, an analyst who follows private prison companies for Avondale Partners, said the Florida deal looked set to add anywhere from $300 million to $400 million in revenues to private operators. This is based on the assumption that they will be taking over the care of between 17,000 and 20,000 prisoners in South Florida, including their healthcare.George Zoley, the GEO Group's chief executive, called the Florida deal "one of the largest opportunities that we've ever seen in the history of our industry," suggesting it could add "several hundreds of millions" to the group's annual revenues. He added it was "the most ambitious" prison privatization to date, in terms of number of inmates being "outsourced."

You spun that nicely back to a request for votes. Interesting.

James King is simply the messenger, Mr. Smith. No need to shoot him. If you're disgusted with the phone calls send a written message to the person responsible, or simply give them a call.

I took the article as questioning the validity of the information, not insinuating as you suggest.

Your post seems to validate the calls.

As a registered Independent male, I haven't received such a call.

I believe you are correct. Gullett would be the adoptive father. Nicki would be the adopted daughter.

Wake up Arizona!
Wake up Arizona!

Human beings turned into commodities to be "outsourced" for $$'s!  Arizona is being turned into a shameful state. Those who voted this in should be put in the prisons they created for "others" - these are the true abusers/criminals.
