Joe Arpaio Opponent Mike Stauffer Calls Sheriff's Upcoming Elvis-Themed Publicity Stunt "Pathetic"

stauffer.jpg
Mike Stauffer: Joe Arpaio is "desperately and pathetically trying to promote himself."
At "high noon," Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio will host his latest publicity stunt at his infamous Tent City Jail in honor of the jail's 18th birthday.

To celebrate, Arpaio has a "big party planned: cake, Elvis, Arpaio, and 'hundreds of Sheriff Joe Fans.'"

Joe's "fans" are inmates, and "Elvis" will be played by a detention officer. A stage has been erected within Tent City for "Elvis" to perform for the inmates, and Arpaio might make a cameo appearance and sing his "signature song," My Way by Frank Sinatra.

Arpaio's opponent in the GOP primary for sheriff, Scottsdale Lieutenant Mike Stauffer, calls the charade "pathetic," and says it's just another example of sheriff "desperately" trying to promote himself.

We grabbed coffee with Stauffer last week. Read about our meeting here.

A few readers wanted to know more about how he feels about Tent City. Stauffer responded by posting a note on his Facebook page.

See Stauffer's note -- in its entirety -- below.

Arpaio is at it again showboating a facility that has cost the taxpayers millions of dollars in lawsuits. This out-of-control facility has done nothing to impact or deter crime in any way. In fact, the so-called tent city is riddled with drugs, gangs, felony assaults, etc. It is unsecure and has several escapes a week due to Arpaio's continued neglect. With only one detention officer per yard in tent city, your safety is in question as is the safety and well being of the detention officers assigned to this facility.

As Arpaio erects a monument to himself, we should all continue to question the 400 un-investigated sex crimes cases, the over 6000 lawsuits, the deteriorating technology, the long response times, the misappropriated taxpayer funds, looming federal investigations, etc...

It's time for a new sheriff, who will spend his time focusing on your safety, your quality of life, and the safety of the employees of MCSO, not desperately and pathetically trying to promote himself.

I just hope that if Mr. Stauffer gets elected as Sheriff he doesn't come up with the stupidity as BO from the WH, "we should look into the future and not back words" or something like that he said and never investigated the illegalities of the previous administration. Arpaio needs to be investigated and I honestly hope Mr. Stauffer has the guts to do that...!!!

I had a long talk with Mike's campaign manager today, very interesting conversation.I didn't realize Mike was as qualified and educated as he is.

I was also very impressed with his views and idea's.

At this point, he gladly gets my vote and the votes of my other 5 family members even if he is a Republican, and believe me, I hate republicans.

More to come :-)

I'd pick a monkey to be sheriff at this point. Anyone is better than that senile old fool we call a sheriff now.

Phoenix New Times should research the reasons why Joe Arpaio cannot be certified as a peace officer (POST) in Arizona and present the results.  That would open a real can of worms.

Hint: He has a criminal record.

Joe has a criminal record? Why am I not surprised?

Bozo Joe Arpaio, total waste of tax payers money and as corrupt as they come.

Arpaio has been living on the darkest aspects of human nature for two decades: voyeuristic sadism and, when that began to wear a little thin, a pathological fear of strangers; xenophobia with a dash of racial hate.

I don't think many people in Maricopa have begun to understand the colossal cost of indulging their thirst for sadistic pleasure and succumbing to fantasies about scary phantoms.   Aside from the $30,000, $60,000, $200,000 and $475,000 judgement or settlement we read about every week, there are an incredible 6,000 pending lawsuits.

With many more to come as the incidents of the last few years get into the court system, as Arpaio's litigation generator lumbers on day in and day out, and as word spreads further and further amongst lawyers and the general public that there are huge jackpots awaiting them in Maricopa County.  "Go to Maricopa young man and get rich" is the advice to young lawyers, except many are women..

6,000 law suits pending and many more coming.  Judgments, awards, the County's legal, witness and other fees, court and discovery costs.  > If there are ultimately 10,000 cases> If only half are lost (lawyers are not bringing cases without an expectation that they will win - mostly it's on a contingency) at a cost to the count of only $10,000 apiece> If the average cost of those lost is only $100,000 (It doesn't take many multi million dollar judgments to boost the average a lot) plus fees of $20,000 (it costs more to lose)

You're already up to $650 million and hoping that things don't get a lot worse. Figure on a billion to be "conservative."

Love how you bastardized the facts. I'm no fan of Arpaio but you're bias and social ideologies being postured by and w/a pseudo psychoanalysis is pathetic, boorish, and histrionic for starts.

If he's elected (and I will do my part to make that happen), it will be amazing how much crap this guy will find in MCSO. I won't be suprised if he finds another $20 million in real problems that Sheriff Ball Sack failed to disclose.

LOL, only $20 million?  The audit that found the 100 million (okay 99.5) was only for payroll, and only for the last eight years.  Try tripling that 100 million, easy.

Yes, we all need to do our part to kick Arpaio to the door, but we also need to prepare for and demand complete transparency from Stauffer when pandora's box gets opened.

Ill say this, Stauffer so far has said the right things..I especially like that he conceded cops routinely profile, just not racially in most cases (which is true..but most definitely in scottsdale, which is my only concern with him)...Id like to see some more background though from his time in NY and see how he handled various instances. I know its a reach, but lets be honest..had we done more research all those years ago and found out Joe was actually a compulsive liar and didnt really do squat at the DEA he likely wouldnt be sheriff. We, the citizens of Maricopa county, need to thoroughly vet the next sheriff so as to make sure the nightmarish greek tragedy that has occured due to Arpaio doesnt have a sequel...

I'm not as optimistic as you are about how knowledge of Rpiehole's past would have prevented his election.  All you have to do to get elected here is pander to the fear and hate of the electorate, Worked 18 yrs ago and still works today.

For the first time in years, I will vote for a Republican. Mike Stauffer is educated, experienced in law enforcement, competent, and NOT an IGNORANT OLD MAN.

Yup, Mike Stauffer is the only alternative choice, if nothing else. I hate to vote for another Republican in this state but sadly he's all we have left.

So far he is the only choice and any choice at this point is better than Bozo Joe.

There isn't anything about Arpaio that's not pathetic...But I guess it all "Depends" on your point of view.

According to Scripture, Satan will live only 1,000 years.Arpaio's been around at least 1,200 - about time for his dispatch to Hell, don't ya think ???

So he wants to keep Tent City? Could he be any more vague? He needs to get specific soon or he is only going to hurt his own campaign and lose. So far I'm left hoping a better candidate arises.

What percentage of Tent City inmates are there while awaiting trial, not actually convicted of anything (yet)?

I've heard claims as high as 80-percent.  Anyone have a cite or referance?  Even if its the opposite of what I expect, I'd like to know.

Royalphoenix2

I believe they have all been convicted. The vast majority have cut deals to go to tent city for 1 year, instead of prison for a longer term. I do not think arpaio will even run again for sheriff. After firing his top 3 thugs for corruption, and the stealing of tax payer funds, don't reckon how he could get elected. peace

I have always heard that it is none.  Somewhere between 0 and 80%, ha.  Someonemust be able to verify the number for certain.  I'm sticking with the 0% answer untilshown/proven differently though.

More hornblowing....

Toot...Toot!!!  You figure what end it's coming from!

And with Arpaio, does it really make a difference?!!

It's a foul smell either way.

Let's get rid of Arpaio.. nothing but a waste to tax payers.  He's a liability and a danger to public safety.

I'd vote for him just because it would be hilarious to have Patton Oswalt as sheriff.

Why not, we've got Elmer Fudd as Atty General.
