Valley Storm Knocks Out KO Boxing Gym in South Phoenix; Donations Sought for Repairs

KO Boxing Gym down for the count?
The storm that pummeled the Valley last week delivered a knock-out blow to KO Boxing Gym in South Phoenix.

Michelle Rosado, a Valley woman who promotes boxing through Face II Face Events, is hoping that Valley residents and boxing fans will pitch in to help rebuild the gym.

Rosado says that the gym aims at "keeping at-risk youth off the streets while creating a safe place and a positive atmosphere for them to pursue their boxing dreams. They've had much success in transforming at-risk youth in the neighborhood into outstanding amateur fighters as well as disciplined young adults and children."

She says that most of the teens who practice their boxing at the gym grew up in tough neighborhoods fighting away gang influence, drugs and street violence -- and gym is often their only refuge.

More than 25 aspiring boxers work out at the gym each week, where they are trained in Olympic style amateur boxing, Rosado says.
