Skip Rimsza, Former Phoenix Mayor, Blasts Union-Supporting Mayoral Candidates

Former Mayor Skip Rimsza accuses three mayor candidates of being the preferred candidates of "union bosses."
To former Phoenix Mayor Skip Rimsza, union is a four-letter word.

Rimsza, mayor from 1994 to 2004, wrote a letter for one mayoral candidate that blasts three others who he claims are preferred by "out of control" union bosses.

Rimsza believes that "Greg Stanton, Claude Mattox, and Wes Gullett all have ties to labor unions with a lot to gain from a Mayor sympathetic to their cause," according to a news release sent out by the candidate Rimsza supports, Peggy Neely.

Rimsza then goes into detail about the supposed sins of each union-supported candidate:

Peggy Neely

"Mr. Mattox is supported by the largest public employee union in the city and stood with them by voting to support the food tax increase and the pay raises..."

"Mr. Gullett was a lobbyist for the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which is the largest public employee union in the country. Nationally, they pushed for the boycott of Arizona. Locally, Mr. Gullett tried to get Maricopa County government to bargain with his union supporters..."

"And Mr. Stanton was an ardent opponent of SB 1070 and is supported by several labor and union groups such as the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Union and the AFL-CIO affiliate Maricopa Area Labor Federation, who together have stood against Arizona and supported boycotting the state..."
We can't speak for all of these candidates, but it should be noted that Wes Gullet once served as former chief of staff for the highly conservative former Governor Fife Symington. As a lobbyist, he obviously takes money from those willing to give, but that doesn't necessarily mean Gullett personally supports the SEIU's causes, any more than a defense lawyer supports the alleged crimes of a client.

Neely seems to be using Rimsza to garner support from right-wing Tea Party types, though labor unions don't have as many sympathizers in Arizona -- a right-to-work state -- as they do elsewhere in the country.

Whether the attack on labor unions and the three mayoral candidates works for Neely will become apparent in the August 30 Phoenix election.

Neely's also a big supporter of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

It is time for a full court press against Neely.  She is the worst choice for mayor ofPhoenix.  The problem is that anyof the other candidates are far better than Neely.  I am partial to Wes Gullet because I think he isbrilliant.  I am compiling informationfrom the public that can assist in this matter against Neely.  Knowing that Neely almost destroyedNorth Phoenix but fortunately resigned from the City Council just in time is mymotivation to keep her from becoming Mayor.  Bryan Jeffries to the rescue. Bryan is the best thing tohappen to District 2.  Please emailthe information you have that I can use to help defeat her.  I will research all information.  Even the Phoenix Board of Realtorsendorsed another candidate.  Neelyis a Real Estate Broker and marketed herself as the only Candidate for Mayorwho is a Real Estate Broker...and the Phoenix Board of Realtors endorsedGullett.  Most in District 2 hatesher.  In my opinion everywhere shegoes she becomes disliked by the people she associates with......my name isClif Freedman, President of Sonoran Citizens Improvement Association.  Email me at Clif@sonoranciitizens.org.

If for no other reason.... DON'T vote for Neely.

Mr. Stanton has gained my vote.

Stanton gets my vote too.  I live in Neely's former council district.  I found her rather distasteful for years.  Now that I know she's Arpaio's jock strap, well, it just seems appropriate.

Greg Stanton has the support of two law enforcement unions -- the Arizona Conference of Police and Sheriffs (AZCOPS) and the Arizona Police Association.  According to Skip Rimsza and Peggy Neely, this is apparently a bad thing.  According to this citizen, former Assistant Attorney General Greg Stanton is the best candidate for keeping Phoenix a safe and vibrant city.

I would vote for a pro-union candidate over a pro-business candidate every time...all other things being equal.

Hypocritical ball sack. I watched Skip at monthly at council meetings praising firefighters and police officers who were retiring. Skip was always bloviating how he sold them his houses. Now he castigates them.

I'll vote for a homeless man before I vote for any of these slimeballs.    They're all worth a handful of Cheerios.

Canidates that support unions will get all the votes from our family.Canidates that support or admire the likes of the criminal politicians such as AARPie Hole & ruSSell-out Pearce will not, simple as that. If Neely feels that sucking up to these criminal politicians will help her, have at it.She should fit right in with them, seeing as how she represents the rights of the developers instead of the voters.Birds of a feather flock together. VOTE STANTON !

Wow..this is the biggest case of the pot calling the kettle black! Skip loved the firefighters and the police not to mention the support of the other unions while he was in office. Anyone who condemns a candidate for receiving the firefighters endorsement is jealous because they wanted it! Let us not forget the well documented MELTDOWN that peggy neely had when she was informed that she would not be getting the endorsement from the fire fighters. Even the farthest right wing tea party folks would love the fire endorsement because it shows that you have a concern for the safety of the residents of Phoenix. Good job Claude, the fire endorsement is very prestigious.

It's odd, that in less than 10 years, firefighters have gone from "first responder heroes" to "the enemy" by the far right.  Teachers and cops also seem to be the "enemy" to them.

How sad.

Just remember, cops were invented so firefighters can have heroes, too...
