MLB All-Star Game -- Jose Bautista: Thank You For Not Being Pete Rose

"Charlie Hustle" in action.
Big ups to Toronto Blue Jays right fielder Jose Bautista -- for showing a little class in a game that means almost nothing.

Lest we forget, that's more than we can say about baseball's No. 1 reject, Pete Rose.

In the top of the fourth inning during tonight's Midsummer Classic at Chase Field in downtown Phoenix, Bautista found himself at third base with two outs.

A single up the center, and Bautista was off for home. Rather than bowl over Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann to score a meaningless run, Bautista went in feet first -- sparing McCann a potentially career-ending injury.

Ray Fosse wasn't as lucky.

Fosse was on the 1970 American League All-Star team as a catcher representing the Cleveland Indians. On the National League team was admitted baseball gambler/convicted felon Pete Rose.

In a game-winning situation in a game that meant literally nothing, Rose crushed Fosse at home plate, basically ending his career.

Fosse, once one of the best catchers in baseball, never recovered. He played several more seasons, but spent much of his time on the disabled list following his collision with "Charlie Hustle."

Rose, ironically, was sent to prison in Marion, Illinois, for tax evasion -- Fosse's home town.

Fosse was a potential Hall of Famer. Rose's only role in Cooperstown these days is selling autographs far away from the town's main drag.

Oh, the All-Star Game means something now. It's winner gets home-field advantage in the World Series. Dare to dream that our currently second-place-in-the-West Arizona Diamondbacks will be there.

First of all, Pete Rose would be the first to point out that NO GAME is meaningless when fan's are paying money to watch. Pete put the fans first (and in the case of the 1970 all-star game...his hometown Cincinnati Fans) and played with a 100% effort 100% of the time. As usual, this ridiculous writer never puts responsibility on the catcher and his position...that COMES WITH THE TERRITORY of being a catcher. The fact is, if my life was on the line (or money coming out of my wallet), I want Pete Rose on my team any day of the week above Ray Fosse OR Jose Bautista.

Bravo for a great article and a moment to remember what a jerk "Charlie Hustle" really was and is. Lots of guys play the game the way it is supposed to be played, and play hard. They also respect the other players who do the same, and manage not to inflict career ending injuries when the player is in a vulnerable position. ESPECIALLY IN MEANINGLESS EXHIBITION GAMES. Rose was an ass, but at least he didn't destroy the integrity of the game the way A-Rod and Mark McGwire did -- admitted cheaters who are nevertheless still with the game. They cheated, they admitted it, and they weren't kicked out. Rose was an ass, but he should be in the game, and in Cooperstown.

Rose's ego driven play ended another person's livelyhood for a game that's played to honor the best players of the year.      I'll bet all these Pete Rose lovers would think differently if they were the one who was severely injured by their legend.  But that would require empathy of which they have none.

Rose's collision at the plate was perfectly legal. This is a stupid article written by a stupid blogger who obviously knows nothing about the game of baseball.Rose is a pompous ass who also happens to be the best bat in the history of baseball. He will be in Cooperstown before all is said and done, although he probably won't be alive at the time to gloat over it.

Roses's gambling had nothing to do with how he played the game. You didn't mention his nickname - Charlie Hustle.

Waaaah!  Pete played hard 100% time... the way it's supposed to be played.  You probably think that kids shouldn't play dodge ball in gym and every little league team should get 1st place trophies.
