Grant Goodman, Attorney, Gets Law License Suspended For Exploiting "Vulnerable" Probate Court Clients

Categories: News

Local attorney Grant Goodman had his law license suspended for up to five years following a finding that he habitually exploited "vulnerable" Probate Court clients.

In an order signed yesterday by William O'Neil, the presiding disciplinary judge for the Arizona State Bar, Goodman's actions are described as potentially harmful to the public and the legal profession if allowed to continue.

Goodman was sanctioned earlier this year for his shady ways, and was the subject of a comprehensive New Times article by Sarah Fenske last year.

His m.o. was to file bizarre court actions against judges, court-appointed guardians and lawyers under the guise of protecting Probate Court clients, then try and rake in the legal fees.

UPDATE: Rick DeBruhl, spokesman for the State Bar, sent us a statement on July 25 about the case:

He was not suspended for five years, he was given an interim suspension which is good for up to five years. The interim suspension is designed to prevent the lawyer from practicing law until his or her case can be heard through the discipline process. When that process is concluded, he would then face whatever sanctions came out of the hearing and the interim suspension would be removed. While not exactly rare, an interim suspension is an unusual action and only happens in extreme circumstances.

I remember meeting and working with Mr. Goodman when he still had his cement company Rockland Materials.  He was a shady character from the beginning.   He nearly convinced the Navajo Housing Authority an entity of the Navajo Nation Government to pump millions in investment into his companies.  A potential joint venture was being proposed and when the Navajo Nation researched Mr. Goodman they returned to say that they would only be involved if they had complete control of the proposed Joint Venture Company to be known as Rockland Navajo Materials.  If this company got off the ground back in 2001-2002, the Navajo Nation would be the largest stakeholder of, at the time, the largest private cement company in Arizona.  It certainly would have been posed to most public funded projects across Arizona, more so in the Phoenix area, of public works project funding through federal resources.  However, as many have commented on Mr. Goodman, his greed got in the way, he refused to take a minority interest, and the Navajo Nation closed the doors on this potential joint venture.  If it worked out I am sure all of Mr. Goodman's creditors would have been paid.  Mr. Goodman was a fool to think the Navajo Nation would ask for nothing short, they of course, completed an intensive background check into Mr. Goodman and had no intention on risking the money of the Navajo people.  The Nation concluded that Mr. Goodman was too risky and that in time his careless behavior would cost him his company.

Awesome post!!Best done by the court by suspending the license of the Goodman for his wrong deeds. Like he is exploiting the probate court clients and this is like one of the illegal ways.

You guys are missing the most important point in this story.....Grant, himself, has been victimized by the very people who have been victimizing the vulnerable adults and incapacitated persons involved in the AZ probate courts!  Why?  For standing up to the corrupt judges and attorneys in efforts to defend the rights of his clients, as well as his own.  Paul Theut, and the Theut brothers and probate judges are the crooked ones who are "raping and pillaging the estates and trusts of the elderly".........NOT GRANT!

My experience has proved to me thatmany attorneys are at least as guilty as Grant is of taking advantage of"vulnerable" probate court clients.  We need laws like those which I have proposed to prevent these clients from being put into situations which make them vulnerable.  Had Grant fought for these legal reforms, I would think better of him.  Anyone wanting information about these legal reforms can request it by sending an e-mail to me at tvfields@oh.rr.com.

Grant Goodman was/is bad news.  Read any document written by Goodman and you’llwalk away with a headache.  Goodman asideprobate court is considered easy and staffed with junior judges with noknowledge of probate.  It is easy to pulla fast one, walk out with someone else’s money, and have the judge neverfiguring out what happened.  Like themovie The Sting, if a con game is successful, the mark does not realize he hasbeen take—at least not until the con men are long gone.  The judges are easy marks, arrogant and ignorant, but not crooked.  Don’t know which isworse.  The court is guilty of allowingarrogance to blind them of the need for change, but that’s all.

I am certainly NOT looking for a fight but here are my thoughts off the cuff....

1. You "Guest" are probably one of the team probate that went after Grant "Good Man."

2. You state, " Read any document written by Goodman and you’llwalk away with a headache." This re-assures my belief that you are part of team probate. WHY would a non-lawyer or other make a habit of reading Grant Goodman's legal documents?

3. You state, "It is easy to pull a fast one, walk out with someone else’s money, and have the judge never figuring out what happened. Like the movie The Sting, if a con game is successful, the mark does not realize he has been take—at least not until the con men are long gone." THAT statement is very telling... team probate of corrupt guardianships know this so yep that is what I think...you are one of them !

Please forgive me if I'm wrong but team probate made up of lawyers and guardians stealing from vulnerable human beings make me sick!

InnocentVicYou are right, "they don't and they WON'T!!!!"  There is NO WHERE to go for the victim's and there family member's.  I think back to an e-mail that I received from Jetta Getty of Port Orange Fl., who is the guardian involved in my mother's tragic situtation.  Getty said that once she got the court behind her there wasn't anything she couldn't accompolish in any area.  That is how sure members of team probate are in their actions.  They know the courts are not going to stop them!

Guest, you could not be more wrong!!  3 of the most corrupt Judges in this state oversee Probate cases.   Go back to Laurie Roberts first articles regarding Marie Long.....the wrongdoings that happened in Marie's case are occurring in 85% of the cases currently being handled by the Maricopa County Superior Court, Probate Division.  You might think that even if more experienced judges did not interfere, then the Judicial Administration would....or maybe the AZ Supreme Court.  Well, they dont and they WON'T!!!!   That is why things continue to get worse.

Holly,

Team probate would never point out the judges lack ofexperience.  More experienced judgeswould interfere with team probate’s control of the probate court result indrastically reduced fees.  Justsaying.

Knowing what I know about  guardianship; professional guardians and their attorneys under the guise of protecting the "ward" while THEY rake in fees FROM the vulnerable persons estate, sounds to me like this attorney tried to put a stop to it and "team probate" ganged up on him.  Research guardianship abuse and then form an oppinion.  See http://stopguardianabuse.org/

Holly, you are EXACTLY correct!!   I've been involved with the AZ probate system for the last 4 years (because of one or my elder family members) and i can tell you, you are dead on with your opinion in the above post as well as the words in your other posts.  Kudos to you!

Apparently you do not know much on guardianship or conservatorship matters.  When you read the records of what this attorney did, the State Bar's actions against him look more than justified.
