"I don't care about dogs, I've probably hit 1,000 dogs in my life."

That's what 69-year-old George Guzman told police Monday night after running over two pooches, one of which was his own German Shepherd.

According to court records obtained by New Times, about 8 p.m. Monday, Guzman was seen driving his black 1995 Pontiac Firebird near 2121 West Tonto Street in Phoenix. His headlights were off and he was swerving.

About 200 feet from his house, Guzman ran over his German Shepherd and a neighbor's Chihuahua. He continued driving to his house with the German Shepherd getting dragged under the car. A trail of feces and dog fur was later found between the point of impact and Guzman's house.

Guzman got out of his car and noticed children in the street crying near the home of the owner of the chihuahua. He walked over to see what was going on, at which point the owner of the chihuahua -- the father of one of the crying children -- told Guzman that he'd run over his dog and dragged his own dog under his car all the way to his house.

Guzman's response: "I'm not drunk." He then went to check on his dog.

The Chihuahua, police say, died instantly. Guzman's German Shepherd wasn't so lucky.

Guzman had to back up his car in order to get the dog out from under it. He then sat in his car "watching the dog die."

When police arrived at Guzman's house, his German Shepherd was still alive. It died en-route to an emergency veterinary clinic.

Aside from telling cops about how many dogs he claims he's run over, Guzman also noted that "I drank a 40-ounce, I think."

Once in custody, the only thing Guzman cared about, police say, was that his wallet come with him to jail.

Guzman was booked on two counts of animal cruelty, two counts of failure to provide medical treatment to an animal, two counts of infliction of serious injury to an animal, two counts of animal cruelty, one count of killing an animal without owner's consent, and two counts of criminal damage.
