Excessive Heat Prompts Joe Arpaio to "Cool it" on Being a Tough Guy -- So, of Course, He Put Out a Press Release

Joe Arpaio plans to briefly "cool it" on being a tough guy when dealing with Tent City inmates.
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says oppressive heat has prompted him to briefly "cool it" on the whole tough-guy thing when handling inmates in his Tent City jail -- and, of course, he wants the world to know.

With temperatures expected to reach nearly 120 degrees this weekend, Arpaio's apparently concerned that Tent City inmates will be uncomfortable, or die, from heat-related injuries and sue the MCSO.

His solution: a truck full of ice.

Starting about 1 p.m. tomorrow, the sheriff will bring a box truck filled with bags of ice to the tents for inmates to use to cool off.

The sheriff will "permit" the inmates to sit on the bags if it helps keep them cool.

"The air temperature may be around 120 degrees, but it's even hotter in the canvas Tent City," Arpaio says in his press release. "It's been fortunate since I opened the tents in August 1993 to never have had a serious heat related health issue. We're not going to have with one this year either, if I can help it."

There's another way to decrease the potential for heat-related health issues -- and the lawsuits that would certainly follow -- that the sheriff apparently has overlooked: don't leave potential lawsuit plaintiffs outside in tents in the middle of the summer in Phoenix, Arizona.

They gave some of the inmates bags of ice - the ones that the media could see.  They did it in the "N" tents - these inmates have an air-conditioned day room where they can sit as well.  The people in the 'con' tents, minor offenders (like DUIs) did not get bags of ice. They got cups of ice.  They have no day room either. The media accounts of his giving bags of ice to the inmates were misleading.

I'm sorry, if my husband can tolerate a deployment to Iraq in tents with no A/C then these guys can do that. While his methods may be un-orthodox I do think some of them should be implemented into our current system. Food and water, medical attention, basic hygiene, and shelter. That's all these people should get, not luxuries.

no a/c in the middle east????  how about 20 million for a/c?http://theweek.com/article/ind...

by the way, I don't consider open air tents with temps up to 145 degrees as appropriate "shelter".

Also, if he let it be known that someone died in the tents, it would be shut down by the DOJ.  What he does is put them in one of those restraint chairs and say they died there

I saw news video yesterday of the Flaccid Fool of MCSO checking temperatures inside tent city. 145 degrees.

It also appears he got a new die job on the top of his skull. I wonder why he hasn't accepted that at the age of 79 he will have grey hair?

The MCSO sheriff is certainly mentally ill.

It wouldn't take a whole lot of effort and expense for MCSO to have a misting system installed on these tents. Could bring the ambient inside temperature down to 110 or so... and it would minimize any future claims against the county for illnesses caused by the extreme heat.

But, that would take an intelligent management decision from within MCSO.

Thus, the problem.

Ratcheting things up in comparison..............Joe's followers would be pleased by his benevolence if he gave prisoners a cup of water before burning them at the stake.

Never had a serious health related issue?!  My wife nearly DIED in that hell-hole. When she passed out, EMTs were called out to rush her to the hospital.  They had to pump 3 pints of saline into her just to get her conscious again.

Of course the Senile Spinster put out a press release. He lives for seeing his sagging wrinkly face and hearing his phlegm infested voice on the idiot box.

Then again, no one really cares about the flaccid old fool known as the MCSO shurf.

Sort of a chicken and egg situation....

Would he have done this without a press release?

I doubt if Arpaio will be indicted on anything.    It has taken too long now.  As more time goes by each indiviual incident becomes less clear and less important in the memories of the majority.   They don't care.    Look at all the politicians in this country that should have been prosecuted.    It's a very small percentage that ever gets indicted or prosecuted.   George Bush Jr is on top of the list.    His are crimes against the nation..treason.    Along with his cronies.    Nothing happened and nothing will happen.     Joe will walk.

I had a co-worker who got a DUI and had to serve a weekend sentence. The guy was somewhat overweight and our of shape, basically looked like Hendershott or Arpaio. He went through hell for that night. It was under 110 degrees daytime but he was literally starting to hallucinate. I am shocked that no one has died over the years in tent city but to say that no one has ever had a serious health related health issue from it is a joke. My understanding is that most prisoners at the jail are in for a short time and they are released before they die but they still go through hell for a day or two. It is absolutely insane to think it is humane or responsible to keep prisoners outside in tents in Phoenix in the summertime, let alone when we are approaching 120.  Ice bags?? He is going to let them sit on frigging ice bags??  I don't thing our overweight chief law enforcement officer would last two hours under these conditions, let alone two days.

"but to say that no one has ever had a serious health related health issue from it is a joke."

Yes, by now we know that Arpaio's version of "the truth" most always leaves out important and relevant facts.

The irony of this story is amazing.

When the MCSO shurf is indicted on federal charges he will be taken immediately to a federal holding facility, with proper HVAC and more comfortable beds, choice of television stations, plenty of reading material, and real prepared food three times daily. Not at all like his very own tent city. It just seems such a shame that he won't get the chance to sleep in the very bed in tent city he has made for all the other 'accused'.

I'm not sure who he will find to change his undergarments, however. They may have to bring in one of those damn 'illegals' since a citizen detainee won't do that job.

Ah, the irony of life and crime.

You are an optimistic. I am afraid I am a cynic who doubts that day will ever come. I think Arpaio's fate will be just like the CEOs of all the mortgage companies and subprime lenders. He will escape justice because he has been careful enough to insulate himself from prosecutable criminal charges.  If you want irony, look at the situation the justice department finds itself in.  Prosecutors have a responsibility to investigate criminal activity with fairness and with an objective eye to whether they can get a conviction, erring on the side of the potential criminal defendant. The US Attorney's office is meticulously going through evidence of MCSO wrongdoing to see what crimes have been committed and whether there is evidence that will likely result in convictions. The irony comes from the fact that Arpaio and his henchmen, aided by Andrew Thomas, are being investigated for disregarding these same professional prosecutorial duties.  A lot of prosecutions against corporate execs for white collar crimes have failed because the executives have been able to create a layer of plausible deniability between them and the folks doing the dirty work of carrying out the criminal activity. Although I do not believe Arpaio is a smart man, he is clever and devious enough to have understood the need for plausible deniability long ago and it will be difficult to pin him with direct evidence that will support a criminal prosecution. The fact that he is an elected official from the opposite party as the US Attorney and will have the full force of the FOX News national ignorata screaming about a political prosecution if he is ever indicted, the prosecutors essentially have a higher bar to meet.

Yep, Gregory, I have occasional lapses of sanity when I am optimistic. Sorry.

I have returned to the reality of life in Arizona.

Tell you what, Arpaio himself should be out at tent city this weekend sitting on bags of ice right along with the inmates...do you think he could "sweat it out" for a 48 hour shift?  Maybe that bit of news would be worth the effort of another press release...

Arpaio's arrogance has/continues to put us on the hook for millions of dollars in claims...

I remember when Joke gave the inmates paper fans to help cool off.  The devices consisted of a paper fan, with "I'm a fan of Joe's" printed on them, and had a wooden stick to hold when waving the fan.

Within an hour, inmates had taken off the sticks and sharpened them, and they were being used as weapons.  The DO's then had to run around tent city and try and collect all the fans and the sharpened handles!

has anybody held in tent city ever died directly from acute hyperthermia?

oh, nevermind, I hardly ever read james' postings all the way through.anyway, if nobody has died from the heat, then tent city is okay.

No one who has not been tried and convicted deserves to be put under such conditions. Innocent until proven guilty is supposed to be the law, but with arpiehole it is perfectly ok to place people awaiting trial, which translates into those that cannot afford a lawyer which is a large portion of the US population, have to suffer cruel and inhuman punishment by sitting in 119 degree ovens. People will suffer ill effects from such exposure, they may not die but it will increase the probability of catching an infectious diseases like tb or the flesh eating staph infec

Inmates at Tent City are sentenced inmates who were sentenced to time in the county jail. They are not pre-trial detainees like the rest of the inmates in jail. They actually are guilty, though usually of minor offenses.

Also, I would think you would be less likely to catch TB from the open air setting in the tents.

But maybe you are just trolling, if so, well played sir.
