Taxpayers to Continue Footing Bill for Andrew Thomas Defense

thomasmustache.jpg
Disgraced former Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas...and his former porn stache.
Former Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas already has blown through the $100,000 in taxpayer money he was granted to defend himself in his upcoming state Bar ethics hearing, and now he's getting even more of your moolah for his defense.

The county has agreed to continue paying Thomas' attorney, Don Wilson, after Wilson filed a motion to withdraw from the case because there was no guarantee he'd get paid for his work. Thomas, he claimed, could then be forced to defend himself.

Yesterday, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors passed the Thomas fiasco off to the county risk manger, who apparently alleviated some of Wilson's concerns.

Wilson did not immediately return our call this afternoon, but he tells the Arizona Republic he's "received some assurances from risk management that we're not going to have trouble getting paid."

How much he's going to get paid is another issue.

As we've noted, Thomas already has blown through $100,000, and that's with no firm hearing date having even been set.

According to emails first obtained by the Republic through a public records request, county officials discussed spending about $300,000 in taxpayer money on Thomas' defense, which is a lot of money, but nothing compared to the $50 million taxpayers have had to shell out over the years to defend his partner in crime, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

How poor is the educational system in AZ.  Well in Maricopa county we were smart enough to elect Thomas as county attorney, twice.  We almost elected him to attorney general in spite of all this garbage coming down on him.  The flaccid fool strongly endorsed Thomas for both county attorney and attorney general despite knowing about Thomas's wide latitudes in prosecutorial discretion that took him way out across the ethical line where he just stayed.

The only way we will get out of the mess is to have voters become somewhat smart about the candidates or at least care enough to think about their vote.  Voting for buzz words like tough on crime, pink underwear, law and order, rule of law, etc. is not voting intelligently.  One should look to see that our law and order sheriff is a crook.  It was clear in 2008 that Andrew Thomas was not tough on crime, but an expensive and ineffective prosecutor that was wandering on the dark side of the ethical line and destroying innocent people in many cases.

Thomas may get his due, at least partially.  However, the people of Maricopa County will get ours too in the 100's of millions this loser has ans will cost us with his games.  Will we learn as a voting block?  I doubt it.  We continue to rabidly support crooks in our state and local government because they say a few things that we want to hear.  Nobody seems to care about the lack of results and the continuum of harm that is pushed onto society.

Arpaio's own public relations lead noted in context that intelligent people don't vote for Arpaio.  I have trouble believing that Arpaio's supporters were not outraged at the comment.  I would be pissed if someone I supported called me a dummy.  Arpaio's supporters just kept on supporting him.  Maybe cutting education in the state actually has a purpose.

Why am I, as a taxpayer, footing the legal bills for this criminal and his slimy, greasy minions?

I think we taxpayers deserve to know what services we are paying for in regards to this state Bar showdown. It's public-record, and I think it should be posted online for all to see.

I'm going to have quite a few cases of cold cerveza and I'm going to be in attendance. I don't want to miss this!!

Now to find out where the disbarment showdown is being held...

My friend,

When it comes to insulting its citizens, this county and state capitol are without peer. You spoke of a lack of contrition. This freckle faced punk can't even spell the word. Thomas, Arpaio, Pearce, and the civic center Nazis labor under the delusion that they conned the morons of Maricopa (County) into electing them, and that's their ticket to run amok.

Arpaio: As sheriff, this pitiable excuse for a politician is alleged to have pilfered $99,000,000.00 from internal jail funds and squandered it on his pet projects. How much ended up in Joey's bank account is something we will never know.Under dual federal investigations for racist department policies and abuse of office for two years now, Arpaio is much quiter but still in his penthouse suites at the Wells-Fargo tower. And Time Marches On...

Jan Brewer: One of the most offensive elected officials to ever come down the lane, the Desert Medussa has vomited lie after lie on the border security ( or lack of it ), how she alone balanced the state budget and brought so many new jobs to AZ. Or Not.

Russell Pearce: No need to waste time reciting his Third Reich record. Recall election, any one ?

And Andrew Thomas: The county's prosecutor for many years, this P.O.S. remains for all time the most unapologetic, arrogant and recalcitrant excuse for a lawyer in the history of humans. The lives that this creature has wantonly destroyed at any and all costs is a well known public record. When the Freckle Faced Freak gets wind of a violation that he can politically capitalize on he will go after it with the tenacity of a rabid dog pursuing a bitch in heat. That is his legacy. And no, he will never apologize for it.

Hundreds of millions of dollars spent to accomplish nothing but creating a maze of dishonesty, lies and childishness that is the theme for latenight comedy on every channel. For five long years at a salary pushing $200,000.00 per year this fucking idiot played kissy-face with Arpaio, lying, stealing, misappropriating... and blaming everyone else. Now the bitch wants more $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.Come see me, Andy-poo, I got a little donation for ya.

Andrew Thomas didn't even bother to show up at the hearing a few weeks ago.  What an over-blown sense of self-importance and arrogance and entitlement he has!  At least Aubuchon's ranting and raving and spinning in circles has had some entertainment value.  Thomas is just an ass.

There are no words to describe what lowlifes these two individuals are.  I wonder how long the pair would last in prison, I don't mean club fed.

If he's the whiz-bang authority on everything that he has always made himself out to be, let the dirt bag defend himself. I'm sure if you asked him, he would say that he is the best man for the job. Then he would blame his loss on illegal immigrants and the great conspiracy stacked up against him.

Arizona will pay for decades for the damage done by MCAO Thomas/Aubuchon/Alexander reign of terror. The destruction and harm they created is unmeasurable. They deserve nothing better then what they wanted for those they maliciously prosecuted. Send them to prison -- under Arizona's draconian mandatory minimum sentencing for decades.

As we're paying the bills, surely these bills fall under the public records domain.  I'd surely like to see the bills posted online so we can all see exactly what we're paying for!

as nasty as it makes me feel, I suppose the point is that he doesn't need any hooks to fall back on for an appeal.

Wait a friggin minute !!.... He's a lawyer, a former county prosecutor who considered himself qualified enough to defend the State of Arizona as a State Attorney General.. he should be able to defend himself!

Richard

As a tax payer, I am offended by this fleecing.   We should demand that Thomas repay the county out of his own pocket!... this was an act of malice and political vengeance.  This was not a regular part of his duties... but instead a political misstep that the tax payers should not be responsible for!

We shouldn't be responsible for defending him in an ethics bar complaint.

They should just give Candy Dandy a public defender.

I have an idea.  Maricopa county could make an agreement with Andrew Thomas to pay his legal expenses in this matter and if the ethics meeting and any court proceedings go against him then he would be liable to repay every cent back to the county.  If they find in his favor, then he is not liable for any repayment.  If he is really that convinced of his innocence then I am sure he would go for this.

They should let thomas defend himself, he deserves as much since it was his moronic legal thinking that got himself into this mess. Not to mention he isn't even the slightest bit contrite about anything he has perpetrated. If this was any other state he would have been disbarred years ago. We can only hope for his disbarment since losing the election he has planned on going into helping the christian rights pursuing more legislating morality.

Gerry_C, Well said. Thomas and his enablers have altered the future of Arizona and what was once a fine state. The legal fees are nothing compared to what it will cost society and the taxpayers for decades for the harm he and his office caused. Innocent lives, families and children destroyed leaving a tainted justice system that lacks integrity. Now who has the courage to correct the damage?

Someone who knows something has come forward and shown the public the sad reality. It rings out loud and clear, unfortunately, is probably the truth. ... "hundreds of millions of dollars spent to accomplish nothing but creating a maze of dishonesty, lies and childishness that is the theme of late night comedy shows...". The harm and destruction to innocent people, families and children is nothing more than a war on their own people / taxpayers / citizens.

Evil is the word to describe these people.

I will bet you any amount today, that if Candy loses the case, there will be an appeal, regardless of who his lawyer is.  That's just the way Candy is.  Look at Lisa A and all her appeals!

Richard, Well said. The winners are the lawyers who collect obscene fees paid for by the taxpayers, while the ordinary person cannot afford a legal defense. Andrew Thomas needs to come back down to earth where he faces the same as the ordinary person -- all their assets and earnings are wiped out!

Exactly, he deserves only the same as those he prosecuted that could not afford an atty receive.

We're watching it self-destruct itself with each passing day. But hey the pro government officials of Arizona (#1 employer) get their weekly paycheck, benefits and lucrative pensions. What do they care?

I would agree to this if I had more trust in the AZ BAR but since I do not, it isn't a solid gamble.

The county needs to say that, with out a doubt, their finding ends at the end of the initial case, and not a dime will be provided for an appeal!

I would never take that bet!  I'm sure you are right, which is why the state needs to ensure that the case is solid and well played.

solid and well played?? Thousands have been convicted of felonies, sent to prison for far less. Those cases were NOT solid but shams and travesties of justice.
