PETA Compares James Ray's Sweat Lodge Victims to Dogs Left in Hot Cars

As Oprah-approved "self-help" guru James Arthur Ray prepares for sentencing after getting convicted of negligent homicide for the deaths of three people at a sweat lodge ceremony, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals are trying to capitalize on the publicity his case received -- by comparing the victims of his fatal death lodge to dogs who get stuck in hot cars.

PETA is negotiating with outdoor advertisers near Sedona, the sight of Ray's deadly "Spiritual Warrior" self-help retreat, to display a billboard showing a distressed dog in a parked car next to the caption "A Sweat Lodge Can Kill You. A Parked Car Can Kill Him. Dogs Overheat Faster Than Humans."

"Leaving a dog in a hot car is as dangerous as locking a person in a sweat lodge," says PETA Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. "The rule is simple: When the weather turns warm, never leave your dog in the car."

Three people died and several others were injured during Ray's 2009 death lodge ceremony.

One of the victims, 49-year-old Liz Neuman of Prior Lake, Minnesota died of multiple-organ failure after the ceremony. The other two victims, 38-year-old Kirby Brown of Westtown, New York, and 40-year-old James Shore of Wisconsin, each fell victim to heat stroke after being in the sweat tent.

Pooches can suffer a similar fate if left in a hot car.

According to PETA, "on a 78-degree day, the temperature inside a parked car can soar to between 100 and 120 degrees in just minutes, and on a 90-degree day, the interior temperature can reach as high as 160 degrees in less than 10 minutes. Dogs can quickly succumb to dehydration and heatstroke and suffer brain damage or even death as a result. Dogs should always be left at home--inside--during hot weather. Unlike humans, dogs can only sweat through their footpads and cool themselves by panting."

Yesooo, I am proud of my natural black lace wigs, but there is no way that I am ready to spend 3 hours or more of my life through the rigors of making it presentable. My hair is natural all the way (I do relax my front wigsand never have) but there is not much I can do with natural hair shoulder length without looking like a woman parading newly disturbed "Ahiaeke. " I give kudos to thoes who have no qualms to relax their hair extensions or thoes who spend up to 6 hours braiding wigs and keep for months without washing every week.

If you had no intention of honoring your written promises if anything went wrong YOU HAD NO BUSINESS BEING AT THAT WARRIOR WORKSHOP!

If it was my sweat lodge built on my property and I was renting it out to others, it would be my responsibility to make certain it was being used safely. Especially if the group who were using it had problems with their sweat lodge ceremony the year before.

While I feel deeply for the three people who died in James Ray's sweat lodge, and for their families, it is entirely incorrect to compare a dog LOCKED inside a car to the participants in Ray's sweat lodge, who VOLUNTARILY stayed.  No one forced them to stay, no one locked them in.  I'm disappointed in PETA for this campaign.  It's wrong on so many levels, and most especially because it grossly misrepresents the James Ray case.

I say the families of the victims should feel insulted that experts are calling them "dogs". Dogs would not stay in a too hot sweat lodge if they knew how to get out, okay! Dogs are NOT THAT DUMB, OKAY!!!!

DOGS WOULD NOT WALK INTO AN OVEN AND STAY THERE. THEY WOULD GO FRIIGIN NUTS TRYING TO GET OUT. THEY WOULD NOT SIT THERE LIKE IDIOTS!

Dogs are just not that dumb!

The sweatlodge may be lethal for the White man. But Native Americans have been practicing this ancient ritual for centuries.

Then again, what that snake oil charlatan created wasn't even close to even be referred to as a "sweatlodge". But a choking gas chamber of hazardous chemicals.

You get what you give....
You get what you give....

There is a huge difference between the two, the dog had no idea he was going to left in the car, yet the victims of the sweat lodge paid money to partake. Just a thought

No one forced those participants to stay in the Sweat Lodge!!  If you can't handle the heat, get out of the kitchen!!!!  they could of left at any time but they elected to stay and by doing so, met their fate! Not Mr. Ray's doing at all!!!!!  and anyone who leaves an animal in a vehicle should be jailed!!!!!

Personally I think the dogs have little more sense to stay out of the oven in the first place.
