Sheriff Shaq?
Should recently retired NBA star Shaquille O'Neal run for Maricopa County Sheriff?

That's the seed the Arizona Republic has planted in the minds of observers of county politics -- and sports fans.

Republic sports writer Bob Young penned an article yesterday suggesting that the "Big Shaqtus" competing for the job of sheriff makes total sense.

It's not like things could get any worse -- the county's current corrupt top cop, Joe Arpaio, misspent nearly $100 million in taxpayer money, his office has been infiltrated by Mexican drug cartels, and he's been under investigation by the feds for various legal and ethical violations for nearly three years.

The Republic cites several reasons why such a seemingly absurd prediction could be a reality. They're listed as follows:

- O'Neal has said in the past that he wants to work in law enforcement and would like to be a sheriff or police chief.

And what with the feds sniffing around, we might soon need a new sheriff.

- Shaq has ties to law enforcement in the Valley, having helped Tempe police secure a $75,000 grant from the people of the Pascua Yaqui Indian Community to start an Internet Crimes against Children Unit.

- He has incentive, having had his honorary badge revoked by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio over a "freestyle" rap about Kobe Bryant.

Sheriff Shaq certainly has a nice ring to it, but we want to know what you think: would you support Shaq in a race against Joe Arpaio?
