Joe Arpaio's Reality TV Babe-Cop Kelly Bocardo -- and Others -- Cost County Taxpayers $650,000 in Settlement Cash

mcsologo.jpg
Since Joe Arpaio took office, the MCSO has cost taxpayers more than $50 million in legal bills.
The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved a $650,00 payout to the family of a 33-year-old man killed by a motorist who was "pursued recklessly and in violation of law at high speeds by" a Maricopa County Sheriff's deputy.

The board approved the payout unanimously.

In September of 2007, sheriff's deputies were in pursuit of a 15-year-old motorist who refused to stop. During the pursuit, the teenage driver fatally hit 33-year-old Salvador Cereceres Herrera.

In March of 2008, Cereceres Herrera's family filed a claim against Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the Board of Supervisors, and the county's Risk Management Department because, they allege, the teen was "pursued recklessly and in violation of law at high speeds by" Deputy Ronald Frieberg.

Also named in the suit is Deputy Kelly Bocardo, one of Arpaio's reality TV babe-cops, infamous for her televised "ass-beatings."

Bocardo, the family claims, did not provide "critical information to her supervisor so he or she could manage the pursuit."

As of May, defending the MCSO in legal cases has cost Maricopa County taxpayers more than $50 million since Arpaio took office in 1993, according to County Risk Management Department.

The MCSO's been sued nearly 6,300 times under the Arpaio regime -- and every time it costs taxpayers money.

Last month, ABC 15 compared that number to Harris County, Texas, which includes Houston and is almost the same size in population as Maricopa County. During the same time period, the Harris County Sheriff's Office was only named in 283 lawsuits.

See the comparison here -- then laugh...then cry.

this is what we have come to expect from Sheriff Joe and not in the name of upholding the law, in the name of reckless, life ending, corrupt ass practices.

Joe needs to go and that was 10 years ago.

We can have a safe county without this scumbag.

I will never forget my 8th grade class booing him out of the auditorium LOL....he is really pathetic across the board.  What sucks is all of us county residents keep paying for him and his corrupt ass regime to lead us down the path of destruction.

You called the suspect who killed the victim a motorist.....wow...it's as of he did nothing wrong here. What is his degree of responsibility in this senseless murder?

Don't advocate violence. It lowers you to his level.

As for high speed chases, I seem to recall that the MCSO wouldn't agree to a ban of sorts on high speed chases. Are they still the only ones who go hell bent to catch someone?

Anyone who had anything to do with that beyond wretched abortion of a show deserves a life of hell.  I wouldn't give her "babe" status either.....hittable when gagged is what I'm thinking.

Isn't that two out of the four that have run afoul of the law recently?

Jesus Christ Joe Arpaio needs to go.

More than 6,300 lawsuits costing taxpayers $50 million+ JUST to defend his ass is ridiculous. The payouts and judgments have cost taxpayers what, $43 million and counting?

When the Flaccid Fool is finally removed from office, he will have cost taxpayers well over 1 billion dollars. That $93 million JUST in legal fees, judgments and payouts could have done so much for this county.

You probably already know the deep pockets belong to Maricopa County, which is why they were sued. Had they called off the chase and the kid still hit someone afterward some folks would be pissed that they didn't just shoot him. It's a no win, at the very best, but generally speaking 'no chase' is the best policy, with notable exceptions. Unfortunately MCSO has no meaningful leadership in it's command structure, thus the street minions are left to their own device. Not a good way to run such an agency.

The MCSO sheriff is mentally ill.

Do you mean put him out of his misery?

You ignore the fact that the author of this blog categorized the murderer as a "motorist."  This is simply another example of the end justifying the means.  The intellectual dishonesty that is allowed by you haters of all things Arpaio is incredulous.

This asshole stole a car, was high, AND was driving like a maniac PRIOR to any attempt from ANY law enforcement officer to stop him.  Of course the family of the victim look to the County for reprisal; the asshole kid's parents probably don't have the money to go after.

Collins, you contradict yourself in an attempt to not miss an opportunity to bash all things Arpaio.  The County is paying out because it was determined that the deputies did NOT follow Sheriff's Office Policy related to Pursuits.  Obviously that means the "street minions are left to their own devices" are held to a standard of some sort.

You seem to know a whole lot, please tell us the Sheriff's Office Policy on pursuits is and how does it contradict your perception of how pursuits should be conducted?

This is the cost of doing business, unfortunately.

...and then when that motorist kills someone while fleeing from a police officer he becomes a murderer.

Anyone who hops behind the wheel of a car becomes a motorist. They could also have referred to him as a "driver" - would that have made you feel better? The reporter described the situation accurately but because they said "motorist" instead of "punk-ass bustah" you got your panties all in a wad. WAHHH!
