Joe Arpaio's Deputies Covered Up Beating Death of Jail Inmate Wietse Ten Boden, Widow of Murdered Prisoner Claims

joefatass.jpg
The widow of a man beaten to death by his Aryan-hating cellmate last year in a jail operated by Sheriff Joe Arpaio has filed a lawsuit against the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office alleging that deputies altered jail records that warned of a potential conflict between the two inmates.

Wietse Ten Boden, 45, was found lying in a pool of blood at the Lower Buckeye Jail last June. He was allegedly beaten to death by his cellmate, 38-year-old Lamont Rider.

Rider, a black man, it turns out, doesn't like "Aryans" -- or anyone he thinks might be an "Aryan."

According to a complaint filed in Maricopa County Superior Court, Rider told detention officers at the jail that he was "not gonna be housed with anyone that's Aryan."

Ten Boden was a Dutch citizen and permanent resident of the United States who spoke with a European accent, so he could be easily be mistaken for an "Aryan" by an agitated jail inmate. According to his wife, however, Ten Boden "had no affiliation with either the 'Aryan Nation' or the 'Aryan Brotherhood.'"

Regardless, she claims, detention officers "knew or should have known that Lamont Rider would consider Wietse ten Boden to be 'Aryan'" because he was "a white inmate and spoke with a European accent."

Yet, the MCSO placed Ten Boden and Rider in the same cell.

Ten Boden's widow claims Rider told inmate classification officers that he wouldn't be housed with "Aryans." Rider's problem with Aryans was documented by inmate classification officers, the claim states.

However,  "following the attack, an employee of the Maricopa County Sheriff's office altered Lamont Rider's classification records to delete reference to the 'Aryan Nation," in an apparent attempt by the MCSO to cover up anything that could make it culpable in the death.

Ten Boden's widow's attorney, Anne Findling, tells New Times there is plenty of evidence showing the MCSO altered Rider's classification documents. She's sending us a copy of the investigative report, so check back later for details.

The sheriff's office did not immediately respond to our request for comment.

savage nigger deserves to be hung from a tree KKK style. fuck those pigs too.

Rider didn't want to be housed with Aryans because he probably had a bad expierence with them in jails, so he wanted to be alone. However Aryans are the nigger haters and I believe the dead man was in jail for raping a 15 year old girl. Rider was probably defending himself and ended up winning. Real talk.

The dead man was a child molester, he probably tried to rape Rider and Rider beat his ass. If Rider warned them not to house him with Aryans, it dont matter if Bowden was Aryan if he was the agressor. Good job Rider

So do the Aryan Brotherhood guys in prison purposefully speak with a European accent?

Has it not occurred to anybody that the word 'Aryan' in this piece is only being used to cover up the fact that this Negro hated white people. He didn't just hate 'Aryans', he hated whites, and would kill any white he was locked up with. Its time some whites paid this sheriff a visit, and paid him 'Turner Diaries' Style.

The media twisting the truth yet again to cover up TNB.

I blame the atmosphere of diversity which has been forced on us since the 50s and 60s more than I blame Arpaio or his deputies. I realize that for safety purposes, jails follow a different protocol for integration than the outside world does (which should bring into question the wisdom of any integration), but I am not surprised to see them ignore their own protocols.

After all, we have been taught since the 50s and 60s that 'there no differences between races' and we continually have this myth repeated to us on a near-daily basis. So why should anyone be surprised that a few sheriffs and their deputies have bought into it also? (at least to the point where they don't consider racial segregation their top priority)

When are they going to do something about Arpaio?  This is ridiculous - everyone and their mother knows how crooked this man is and how unconstitutionally and unfairly he does his "job".

The facts are that the dearly deceased was in jail for raping a little girl! A cho mo as they are called "child molester" go back and google it. He deserved to be killed, raping an innocent child. And the Sherrif office did not alter the report just another $ Hungary attorney and his pitiful widow trying to Blame the msco. Do the crime, do the time.

Even giving Joe the benefit of the doubt - let's assume he's squeaky clean and all these corruption incidents have been going on without his knowledge because he "works through delegation" (just for the sake of argument)...  Even so, he needs to be out of office. I don't care how clean you've kept your own hands - if shit like this is going down in your department and you can't do anything about it, you need to be replaced.

And those who may get a DUI after a night out or get stopped in their car could find themselves in the jail with high risk inmates thrown into a deadly situation like what was described. Wake up people, if you think this can't happen to you, think again. Those who have once again voted the sheriff and his enablers into office also have blood on their hands. People have been informed for years and have allowed cruelty, inhumanity and unnecessary deaths to take place over and over and over. This alone should be a warning to anyone thinking of visiting or moving to Arizona. ALL are at risk with out of control law enforcement, jails and prisons.

I wonder how much MORE money the Flaccid Fool will cost Maricopa County taxpayers for his now daily dose of stupidity?

Also, why can't we get prosecutors with a pair of cojones to go after him? Seems to me that there have been at least 3 presidential administrations that could have opened investigations into Joe. Arizona has had at least 6 U.S. Attorneys, including now Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, who could have nailed Joe. There have been at least 5 Arizona Attorneys General, including Grant Woods, who could have put Joe away. There have been at least 3 Maricopa County Attorneys, including Rick Romley, who could have gone after Joe.

Further, where is Dennis Burke and Eric Holder in their abuse-of-power grand jury investigation? Seems to me that there is PLENTY of circumstantial evidence needed to, at the very least, secure indictments. The DOJ's investigation has been going on for almost 3 years and it's been quiet. There have been no results as Holder promised.

To complete my analysis, why can't the taxpayers of this county recall the Senile Spinster? The Russell Pearce recall paves the way and sets precedent that the taxpayers can say NO to a detrimental politician. We taxpayers deserve better. I say it's time to recall the Senile Spinster.

Weiner shows his underpantsed weiner and the whole press corps stops to cover the 'case.' On the other hand, Arpaio is responsible for so much sadness, grief, negligence, corruption, tacit murders, and on and on and on... and not even a blip.

The only way Arpaio will ever go down is if he tweets a pid of Henderblob's nose up his ass. Otherwise, it will just go on and on and on. Same as it ever was.

Joe knows nothing.  He can't say that it is so, or not so.  The buck stops somewhere else and that changes each day.  The number one rule of Shurffing is that the Shurf is not responsible unless it is good news.

.. tourists and newcomers from Canada, Europe and out of state, who have been solicited to come to Arizona to visit or live are most at risk to find themselves thrown into the criminal justice system and their assets seized through the broken legal which is out of reach for ordinary people. Jason,Since that continuing federal grand jury investigation began meeting a few years ago, learning  of the abuse of power allegations against Arpaio and no doubt other illegalities, Arpaio has just made matters worse with more and more outrageous actions.

For example just last fall his refusal to comply with the DOJ's  order to supply MCSO documents and access to MCSO personnel, required by federal law,  and having to be sued by the feds to obtain them.  The grand jury was convened before the Munnell memo, before the subsequent Babeu investigation, before it was learned of the $95.5 million in knowingly misspent funds.  It's gone on and on, and with every instance of malfeasance, misfeasance or nonfeasance, it's got to have necessitated that grand jury investigation being dragged out even longer.

The duration is definitely frustrating, but Arpaio just keeps making matters worse with new unlawful actions and revelations that can't be ignored and that have arisen in just the past two years.I don't envy Dennis Burke and his staff having to document and compile all the abuses of law enforcement power under color of law by Arpaio and company.

An now we have yet another preventable murder in Arpaio's jails.....

Exactly, Arpaio's minions love to through the idea around that how can the Sheriff be responsible, when he wasn't there or was directly involved. How can anyone blame Joe Arpaio, he wasn't working the jail that day or was a classification officer?Waiting to see how Lisa Allen spins this....Arpaio wasn't there......

I bet that Burke obtained a copy of the September DOJ lawsuit and the accompanying summary judgment motion for legal review and analysis.

The GJ was convened because the MCSO shurf opened an "investigation" into Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon in 2008. For what, beats me.

Every episode of MCSO malfeasance must be sent to Burke for legal review (why did we put Monty and Horne in office if every case gets kicked to Burke?)

The Munnell Memo and the county "corruption" cases certainly have given Burke enough fodder for indictments. The Buffoon "investigation" was whitewashed to make it seem like the Flaccid Fool was/is a clueless manager. Either he knew about what was going on, making him liable criminally and civilly, or he didn't know, making him look like a total idiot while at the same time making him liable criminally and civilly.

The latest revelations of MCSO corruption and BS are only making Burke's job harder I agree. At the very least, he needs to show county taxpayers some type of life on this investigation. I guarantee that if Joe gets indicted, the BS will stop, though county taxpayers will likely be wiping Joe's ass for quite a while once the indictments are ever handed up.

I'll tell you, what with the MCSO staking out my house this past Saturday night and all, I thought for sure I'd get arrested by Joe's SS goons because of what I know about the Stapley prosecutions. They sat outside my house for about 30 minutes with their headlights on. The patrol vehicle was marked. It was a Ford Expedition. There is NO WAY that Joe's SS goons could have known the exact address where I live.

I don't envy Burke either. He has a daunting task trying to break the MCSO's corruption web. Yes we have yet another preventable death in Joe's jails. The MCSO has already been sued over it. We taxpayers will more than likely hand over the crown jewels to this plaintiff to pay them.

I do live in an incorporated city with its own police force. I live in Mesa. Why would the MCSO need to serve me with legal paperwork at 11 at night? I know for fact that I didn't do anything wrong.

As for the Norberg murder, my dad worked as an MCSO detention officer until '96. I didn't live in Arizona at the time.

If anything, Monty and Horne both need to work with Burke to help secure indictments. Only then will Maricopa County residents remotely begin to feel safe.

Jason,

You raise some good points.  Before I get into them though, I wanted to mention that I was doing a little background checking into what was posted earlier about the Scott Norberg murder by sheriff's deputies (June 1996) in Arpaio's jail which I remember well.  I hadn't realized there was an FBI/DOJ investigation into it (after attorney Michael Manning supplied them with boxes of documents) and that damning evidence was destroyed by the sheriff's office.

Napolitano WAS U.S. Attorney for Arizona (1993-1998) at the time and she came to some kind of settlement with Arpaio with specific stipulations:  effectively that he had to clean up his act in the jails which he apparently agreed to. (Hah)  They didn't stop using the deadly restraint chair until about ten years later. Napolitano ran for Az attorey general after that (1998-2002) and didn't run for governor, with Arpaio's endorsement, until 2002 and was re-elected in 2006.

That had me reflect on ALL the politicians that Arpaio befriended and conned, just as he conned much of the law abiding public,  who may have viewed him as an eccentric tooter of his own horn, but never fully appreciated his damaging, abusive, vindictive, incorrigible and wicked capabilities until he tried to destroy them, just as he did with anybody ever running against him.  (Now THAT was a REAL threat to him.)   And he had an entire gigantic law enforcement agency and eager news cameras at his disposal to do the job on anybody:  Phil Gordon, Mary Rose Wilcox, Stapley, Kunasek, the five judges, especially Donahoe, county employees, and so many more, with Andrew Thomas, hopefully on his way to being disbarred, right in tow.

It was stunning to me watching presiding supervisor Kunasek do and say nothing at that open public BOS meeting a couple years ago, as sheriff's deputies strong armed and arrested four or five citizens who did nothing more than applaud an anti-Arpaio speaker with whom they agreed. Then a year or so later Kunasek himself was the subject of a bogus Arpaio "investigation" and bogus charges.

His failed attempt to go after law enforcement pro Mesa PD chief Gascon boomeranged, and his illegal use of campaign funds to sabotage feared county attorney Romley was another indication of just how sick and afraid he is._________________

Some comments on your thought provoking remarks:

"The GJ was convened because the MCSO shurf opened an "investigation" into Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon in 2008. For what, beats me."

Arpaio had a public hissy-fit about the feds'  investigation, blaming the reason for the iinvestigation -- not the facts of Arpaio's actions-- all on "the mayor of Phoenix."  Remember, Gordon wrote a well documented letter to the Civil Rights Division of the DOJ, alleging blatant racial profiling by Arpaio and company by selectively  harassing people in Phoenix hispanic neighborhoods during his targeted "sweeps."Gordon said that six days later, HE was being "investigated" for no legitimate reason by the sheriff's office. (absurd demands for Gordon's emails, etc.)  No rhyme nor reason.

"Every episode of MCSO malfeasance must be sent to Burke for legal review (why did we put Monty and Horne in office if every case gets kicked to Burke?)"

Good point.  Are Montgomery and Horne lazy scaredy-cats, afraid to tackle the Arpaio abuse, so they're dumping everything on Burke?  Or is it possible that they, Burke included,  think that's the best way the Arpaio malfeasance should be handled?  Kind of like a central repository for all of Arpaio's wrongdoings?   Despite the time this is taking,  so far I get good vibes from Burke as being assertive, confident an competent....not a pushover for Arpaio shenanigans.  Not one likely to be (figuratively) "bought."

About the Munnell Memo and the Babeu investigation.  Granted, the reason Arpaio chose Babeu was transparent,  to be able to exonerate himself.  And verbally, Babeu did just that.  "Joe was deceived, Joe didn't know" ad nauseam.   However from parts I've read of the Babeu investigation, and from what some others have said from reading it, Arpaio IS implicated in  the MCSO corruption that was investigated.

I think you're  right when you said, "I guarantee that if Joe gets indicted, the BS will stop,"I'd hate to guess what we can expect if he does NOT get indicted.

If you live in an incorporated city or town with its own police force, that occurrence of the marked MCSO vehicle parked where it was for 30 minutes with its lights on would be highly irregular. If on the other hand you are served by MCSO, it could be a fluke, stalking a neighbor perhaps for some  possible legitimate law enforcement  reason.  It is reminiscent, however, of all those county employees who were stalked in the same manner.  It would say that Hendershott or no Hendershott,  nothing has changed.   Fear and intimidation.

Let's hope for the best with Burke.  Good strategic investigative forces, through training and experience,  have a lot of smarts,   understanding and expertise putting cases together that we average folk don't know about.  But if they could only detain Arpaio to prevent him from causing any more damage in their "web of corruption."

Any ordinary person in Arizona with first offense, non-violent, facing a felony would be guilty and have to prove their innocence and find themselves facing decades in prison. So there's one standard for the ordinary people under Arizona draconian mandatory minimum sentencing and the elected officials are can do what they want at will, are immune and answer to know one. Doesn't this describe tyranny?
