Wes Gullett Says He's Not Trying to Push Anyone Out of Phoenix Mayor's Race

Wes Gullett
Phoenix lobbyist Wes Gullett, in the running to be Phoenix's next mayor, says that he isn't trying to "push" one of his opponent out of the mayor's race.

He sent an e-mail sent yesterday to a few of his supporters asking for them to "talk to [Attorney Jennifer Wright] about her realistic chances of winning" and to consider the votes that she would be costing him.

It was just a strategic move, he says.

Gullett says that former Councilwoman Peggy Neely's supporters have been continually asking him to step out of the race, questioning whether he can raise enough money to win -- they are presumably concerned about the votes Gullett would cost Neely.

"I tell them, 'I'm running, and I'm running hard. And I'm going to get all the money I can," he tells New Times.

Neely recently resigned her post on the council to run for mayor. She faces Gullet, Wright, former Councilman Greg Stanton, Councilman Claude Mattox, and Libertarian Thane Eichenauer in the August 30 election.

The top two candidates in August will advance to the a run-off election in November.

"I just want to keep my support," Gullett says. "I wasn't trying to push anyone out of the race. I just wanted them to ask the question."

Gullett says he doesn't want people to get caught up in the excitement of Wright, a Tea Party member, entering the race and not consider how that might compromise the overall goal of electing someone who will make "fundamental changes in the way our city government is conducted."

"If I don't make the run-off election (in November), then Greg [Stanton] is going to win. There is no doubt in my mind about that," he says. "Greg can beat Claude. Greg can beat Peggy."

Gullett says he is a more formidable opponent, and can take on Stanton in the November election.

Why is a LOBBYIST running for mayor???  Seriously.  After destroying the state budget and nearly bankrupting the city of Phoenix by representing special interests for hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in retainers, Gullet now wants to run the city so what... so that his business partners can pay him???  Why have elections any more at all?  The lobbyists run everything anyway.  Let them just mug us for our paychecks and than spend it on their mansions and cars without the time consuming monotony of pretending to run government.  In Chicago, they are letting Mayor Daley walk away with a million bucks after putting the city into the biggest crime spree and economic depression SINCE THE DEPRESSION.  Yay, I can't wait for a lobbyist for mayor.  How about Ronald McDonald for dietician... pedophiles for day care workers... etc.  This is really insane.

I like your moxy Monica.  At least you are willing to get in here and defend your work.  Like others here, I think there is plenty of stuff on Stanton worth writing.  Like how he would tell his colleagues to "vote however they wanted" on key zoning cases (ala Trump Tower) instead of making a case for the neighbors (i.e. do the job he was elected to do).  Then blasting them for not "doing the right thing".  Greg , as a councilmember was spineless, afraid, and unwilling to act as a leader.  We can expect the same if he is elected mayor.  It's a long election, surely you will get to Greg's misdeeds in time.

Mr. Mike -- Listen, whatever helps you deflect from the politically embarrassing situations that the candidate you support finds themselves in...

Lemme explain something -- I'm a reporter and I dig around to find out what kind of leaders these politicians have been, how they've behaved in office. See, that way the public a sense of what kind of leaders they will be if elected mayor.

I came across information about Stanton's campaign getting ripped off by Billy Shields' daughter. I broke that story .. and it wasn't exactly a shining moment for Stanton.

When I write about Neely taking a week-long trip to Hawaii on the taxpayers' dime  ... that doesn't mean that I support Stanton, it just means that Neely spend a week on Waikiki Beach. She can say that it resulted in Phoenix getting a soccer tournament, but the organizers of the event say that their decision had nothing to do with Neely going to Hawaii.

When I write about Mattox sitting in the city's U.S. Airway Center suite for legendary concerts, claiming that he can't even remember who paid for them ... c'mon now.

It's not my fault that Neely didn't take Stanton with her to Hawaii or that Mattox didn't invite Stanton to watch Bob Seger, Elton John or Billy Joel in concert.

And as far as Gullett and his e-mail goes ... he is the one who said that Stanton could beat Neely and Mattox in the run-off. Not me.

You gotta think these things through, Mr. Mike. But I'm sure that saying that I support Stanton is a lot easier than facing the truth about a candidate you support, admire.

Will Arpaio send out illegal campaign mailers or do TV ads in hopes of getting a lapdog as mayor?

If he is trying to push a candidate out of the race against him, then... so what? That's a "bad" thing? I'm less likely to vote for him for giving such a pussy answer to the press.

Why'd the Phoenix New Times enlarge a small picture to accompany the article? The same sized, clear and sharp picture is on his site.

Dear Monica Alonzo please try and at least not make it so obvious you back Greg Stanton! It is OK but really!!!! this article on the heals of the Mattox article is a joke. ( I am sure you will print only how amazing Greg is)  I see nothing wrong with the point Wes is making in his email.  I am sure Greg is a great guy but shouldn't you as someone with the power of the pin try and fake your not so bias.

I will have to agree with Mr. Gullett. After having attended the forum at the Phoenix Theater on the 5th I came away with the feeling that Peggy Neely was lecturing to the audience, not answering the question or making a position statement. I put Mr. Stanton and Mr. Gullet as #1 and 2, followed by Mattox. Peggy may have to fight it out with Ms. Wright and they will both lose.

I see nothing wrong with Wes Gullett asking the question.  Given the perverse incentives and unintended consequences of the election system currently used by the city of Phoenix it is almost surprising that the issue hasn't come up earlier.  Such actions could readily be avoided if cities, counties and states adopted Ranked Choice Voting (often called Instant Runoff Voting).  In 2008 45% of the voters in Glendale Arizona voted to adopt this system.  Perhaps it is time to have an adult conversation with the future officials of the city of Phoenix about endorsing a system that could easily avoid holding TWO elections when it could be handled by one.

I see nothing wrong per se with being a lobbyist or any other legal profession.  The problem isn't the job itself but what you lobby for or against.  If I go by the FirstStrategic web site Gullett's firm has lobbied for the Translational Genomics Research Institute which Greg Stanton is a raving fan of.  There is a reason why I am dissatisfied with Gullett and Stanton and Mattox and Neely and that is that they all are advocates of smart socialism.  I am not.  I say let people and businesses engage in free enterprise without aid nor hindrance by the city government.   by the city government.

One of my hopes is that Greg Stanton wins or looses on his own merits, not whether or not Joe Arpaio does a commercial for candidate Y or Z.

You can expect that he will, if he isn't using his campaign money for his personal criminal defense by then.
