No justice for the Padres as Eric Patterson is ruled out at home.
The Arizona Diamondbacks and the San Diego Padres continued their battle of National League West cellar-dwellers at Chase Field yesterday in a ballgame the Diamondbacks won 6-1.

Young starter Daniel Hudson was good, scattering eight hits over seven innings while allowing one run to lower his earned run average by a third, from 4.41 to 4.03, but he was helped out by shoddy umpiring and poor baserunning by the Friars.

Still, a win is a win is a win, and the Diamondbacks are on a bit of a hot streak taking three of their last four games after losing five in a row last week.

Hudson looked like he was in for a long game when Chris Denorfia smacked him around for a triple to lead off the game but after allowing a sacrifice fly to Jason Bartlett, Hudson got out of the first unscathed.

Hudson gave up another leadoff triple to Eric Patterson starting the second inning. Rob Johnson followed and lined out to Justin Upton, who threw home. Patterson was ruled safe but out on appeal. Third base umpire Joe West -- the country-singin' ump who's the only one with his own publicist -- called Patterson out for supposedly leaving the bag early.

Looked like a bad call on replay.

The closest Hudson came to more trouble was in the fourth. He got Brad Hawpe to ground out to lead off the inning. Ryan Ludwick singled next but was thrown out by Miguel Montero at second. Patterson came up and singled, then stole second, but he was wasted when Johnson grounded out.

On offense, the D'Backs were excellent, grinding out a run on a double by Kelly Johnson, a sacrifice by Ryan Roberts, and a groundout by Justin Upton in the first. Miguel Montero drove Upton in twice, once in the fourth and once in the seventh, while Gerardo Parra contributed two RBI and Stephen Drew knocked in one.
