Morning Poll: Sergeant Sean Drenth Death: Murder or Suicide?

Categories: Morning Poll

Last week, the Phoenix Police Department updated the media on the investigation into the shooting death of Sergeant Sean Drenth. As we noted, the update raised a lot of questions but no answers as to who killed the sergeant -- and it's still unclear whether he was murdered or committed suicide.

Click here for the bizarre details.

One thing, however, seems clear: Drenth wasn't the only person at the scene of the shooting in the 29-minute window from when he got there to when his body was discovered by a State Capitol police officer.

Drenth's body was found next to the open passenger door of his squad car with a shotgun wound under his chin and his shotgun resting on his chest as he lay on his back.

Seems to imply suicide, right? But then you have to take into account the fact that Drenth's service weapon was found on the other side of a fence on the west side of the parking lot where his body was found. Another of Drenth's weapons was found next to his body. One
bullet had been fired in the direction of where the other gun was found.

"I started at 50/50 [in terms of whether it was murder or suicide]," Lieutenant Joe Knott, head of the PPD's homicide unit, says. "Throughout the investigation, that's shifted in both directions...it's extremely frustrating."

Frankly, we don't know what to think, but we want to know how you feel about it: was Sergeant Drenth murdered, or did he commit suicide?

Freakin' awkward to put a shotgun barrel under your chin and pull the trigger. It's done, I know, messy as hell, and those who do it generally take a shoe off and pull the trigger with their toe.

It's also a really good way to cover up an entry wound from a pistol.

Did Drenth have both shoes on?

interesting take, good questions, and unless they find that other bullet from his backup, this remains a valid point

I admitting to voting for "I don't know what to think" of this. But I also believe he was murdered. But it's also tricky, because he knew he was in deep trouble and was being investigated. I just wondered what the Sergeant's emotional/mental state was, in the days prior to his mysterious demise. Was he depressed, down and gloomy? That would probably indicate suicide. But nothing is being said about his behavior. Another article says he was "care free" but that does not justify a pretext to suicide.

So this case will remain a "WHODUNIT?".

This is clearly a murder to make it appear like a suicide. I would check those officers who's DNA you've checked (the ones tied to the investigation of off-duty work not performed). Do a lie detector test on 'em.

Let's just face it....he was murdered by another cop. That investigation that he was under was a can of worms...these boys are involved in serious crimes. Drenth was more than likely going to rat out to save his own worthless ass. If you know anything about the depth of corruption in the PPD, then you just may know who it was that shot Drenth. That DNA has turned up the killer....but whether they do anything about it is a different story. Those worm shit cops are all afraid of each other, if one starts talking then all of them will.
