Defensive Lapses and Baserunning Miscues Sink Arizona Diamondbacks in 6-4 Loss to Colorado Rockies

Barry Enright can't win ballgames on his own.

​Arizona Diamondbacks starter Barry Enright just couldn't help himself enough to win last night.

Enright pitched well to start the game, shutting down the Colorado Rockies for the first three innings of the ballgame. He even hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the third, notching the first hit of the game off Rockies' starter Jhoulys Chacin.

Everything fell apart in the fourth en route to a 6-4 loss.

In the top of the fourth, with Todd Helton on first and two outs, Enright got a seemingly harmless fly ball from Ian Stewart that Justin Upton misplayed badly, allowing Helton to cross the plate. The official scorer marked it a double, but that isn't fair to Enright: the catch was routine, a can of corn, and Upton simply missed it.

The next batter, Chris Ianetta, followed up with a homerun to give the Rockies a three-run lead, which seemed like all the Rockies would need with Chacin shutting the Diamondbacks down for seven innings.

If the fourth inning debacle wasn't on Enright, the fifth inning was.

Dexter Fowler popped out to start the inning. Enright proceeded to walk Jonathan Herrera and Carlos Gonzalez back-to-back. Troy Tulowitzki flew out to left but Todd Helton came up to the plate and smashed a deep double plating Herrera and Gonzalez. Seth Smith singled Helton in for all the runs the Rockies would need.

Juan Miranda walked to lead off the fifth inning for the Snakes, then got busted trying to steal second on a 2-0 count, an embarrassing baserunning blunder with the team down five. It killed the team's rally before it could get started.

Kelly Johnson hit a solo shot off Chacin in the sixth to bring the Diamondbacks closer but that was about all the offense they could muster off Chacin, who ended with seven innings pitched, two runs, three hits, four walks and six strikeouts.

Enright pitched five, gave up six "earned" runs on four walks, six hits, and one strikeout.

Ryan Roberts led off the ninth with a lineout, but the team began a small rally. Miranda followed by homering off Rockies reliever Matt Reynolds to narrow the lead down to three.

Reynolds walked Gerardo Parra next, which brought out Rockies closer Huston Street. Parra took second on fielder's indifference after Jack Wilson popped out, then scored on a Melvin Mora single to second. Chris Young singled next but Johnson struck out to end the game.
