ASU Undie Run Assault, Compliments of the ASU Wrestling Program *VIDEO*

wrestlerfight.jpg
This is why undie runs at Arizona State University aren't a great idea.
Arizona State University's annual "Undie Run" is all fun and games -- until a guy gets knocked out by a couple of college wrestlers and somebody has the bright idea to post video of the assault on Yotube.

The video has been making the rounds on the Internet the past few days. It shows two members of ASU's wrestling team ganging up on another student, hitting him repeatedly until one of the wrestlers sucker punches him and he falls to the ground. Then, all the undie runners cheer "ASU...ASU."

See video of the assault below.

The two wrestlers have been identified in the comment section of the Youtube video as ASU junior Te Edwards, and freshman Carlos Castro, both of whom (as you can see by clicking their names) are on the wrestling team. Although, ASU officials would not confirm to New Times that these were the two men seen in the video.

ASU athletics spokesman Doug Tammaro would only say that the two men in the video are ASU wrestlers. He tells New Times the university is aware of the video and that the two students featured in it have been suspended from the wrestling team.

"We are handling it with ASU's student-code-of-conduct-policy process and the two student-athletes have been suspended indefinitely from the team pending the outcome of the process," he says.

ASU police were not immediately available for comment on whether any criminal charges have been filed against either wrestler. However, we're told they will be returning our call later this afternoon.

The assault seems pretty brutal, and the wrestlers appear to be thuggish aggressors picking on the apparent victim. However, there are two sides to every story, so we sent Edwards an e-mail asking if he wanted to tell us his side of it. He responded by saying, "The media is just gonna twist my words around and make me look like some high strung, bully when they don't even know the whole story."

He's right -- we don't know the whole story. But we do know we just watched him brutally sucker-punch another student when he wasn't even looking, and we'd kinda like to know why.

Check back for updates.

I hope they get booted out of school or loose any funding awarded for the education.

I love how the wrestlers were celebrating as if they're not getting kicked out of school for assault... LMAO!

By the looks of the one guys attempted single-leg, I find it hard to believe he was actually on the wrestling team. Guys like that should be put in the cage with a real fighter...see how they like getting hit.

ASU's wrestling team has been out of control for years. Wrestlers lived next door to me 6-7 years ago and were *absolutely* belligerent to all their neighbors. (Taunting, aggressive, foul-mouthed, cursing at neighbors, screaming in the middle of the street at 3 am just to prove to neighbors they were in control.).

At that time I wrote a letter to Crow and the director of the athletic department. Not even the courtesy of a response. So, it doesn't surprise me that the wrestling team finally assaulted someone.

I still have the letter I sent to Crow, in case the victim is considering a lawsuit. IMO, ASU has begged for a lawsuit. I still have contact with the other neighbors who experienced ASU's wrestling team abuse. I'm sure they'd agree to tell their stories. (The landlord of the property had his property destroyed and stolen when they moved out. The wrestlers left no forwarding address and would not tell the landlord where they were moving.).

People wonder why shootings occur in schools.

It's unfortunate that athletes get held to a much higher standard than the regular public in situations like this. I could easily see this written the other way if the large guy in the center was a football player or wrestler. However, that is the way it is and student athletes need to realize that.

I wish people would do a better job reporting on it though. Articles like this one that are one sided, biased, mostly subjective and negative don't do any good for anyone.

It's unfortunate that athletes get held to a much higher standard than the regular public? So they should get a pass? BS! Athletes or  anyone else guilty of being a thug and throwing a vicious suckerpunch that could seriously injure someone should go to jail.

Pretty sure that the standard you speak of applies to everyone. To break it down to the simplest of forms, don't act like a douchebag and you won't be at the center of a video that features you and your equally petite friend hassling and physically assaulting another individual.

Traditionally, the standard for the student athlete goes the other way, they get far more leniency than a non-athlete.

As far as any journalistic bias, the fact that they reached out to at least one individual involved and he refused to comment is not their fault and doesn't indicate any bias. He was given the opportunity to comment and refused, in not commenting he was the one who steered the article toward the tone in took. If you don't want to explain then you can't be surprised when the description of events is limited to what was shown in the video.

Higher standard - wtf are you talking about? It happens these diminutive cowards are athletes, but the news is that several lilliputians picked a fight and then sucker-punched a seemingly innocuous dude..

You don't like one-sided reporting, then go tell the coward who launched the sucker punch to man-up and give his account.  Would you have the PNT not report whenever one side lacks the balls to comment on the record? Should we reward the ongoing lack of integrity and courage by the shrimps by giving them a pocket veto of what stories one can run?

The midget is in trouble because he sucker punched a dude and then, like the coward we see in the video, ran away from the press.

A couple of douchebags are on the wrestling team? Will wonders never cease. They should be dumped on MIll Ave. in their underwear at about 2 AM on a Sunday so everyone can take a turn on them.

YAAAY! Cheap shot to the chin and the crowd goes wild! Nice work douchebag! It should be noted that they waited to get into their underwear before getting into a fight with another man.

Wow. He had his chin up and everything. The only reason that guy got knocked out is because he didn't see that little fly buzz in.
